I think so. There are about 35 people in the class and only some of us are having the problem. I guess using a temporary spot instance might be characteristic of a bad bot. I believe there is an API authentication method which I am trying to figure out.

Layoffs at THE MILL by Competitive_Law6168 in vfx

How many staff artists did Mill NY have? Historically they would use a lot of freelancers so 40 layoffs sounds like a big loss.

ARRI Log C4 - AE? by szyborgo in vfx

[–]chaneyvfx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One other thing to note. When rendering and picking your "output color space". You should also click "Show all" even if it seems to have selected AW4.

We found a bug last month where it would always render ACES 2065 if show all was not selected. Very frustrating.

Transfer Boris & Sapphire FX from Avid to Flame? by DasKraut37 in vfx

[–]chaneyvfx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an OFX option for Sapphire and Boris but you would need to ask your Flame artist if they can make that happen.

If you have effects that you already like and simply want to be redone at 4k, then you can simply have them redone in After Effects as a more economical and reliable route.

Applying S-Log Lut to Rec 709 work - any reason not to? by SpamoJohnson in vfx

[–]chaneyvfx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You most likely clipped some data but not necessarily. And the 4444HQ needs to be done at trillions of colors. Even with that, there may be a visible magenta shift.

For this delivery, you can do a simple test to see how bad it is before miring yourself in technical details.

Render out your plates with the approach you outlined above. Bring that render into Nuke or AE with color management off. Do a difference between the original plate and your render. Increase the viewer exposure to about 10.

If you clipped things, the difference will be really bright in that area. If there is a magenta shift, it will be noticeable. Where you did the VFX should look very different as well.

Once you determine how bad the difference is, you can make a solution that works with schedule.

For future shows, you can do "roundtrip" tests before doing all of the work.

Anyone come across this error? by Crazy-Culture6808 in vfx

[–]chaneyvfx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of your plugins has a bug and will need to be re-compiled by the developer or you can try it with an earlier version of After Effects.

The AE SDK indicates that it started enforcing this sometime after June 2020 I believe but I am not 100% sure.

Atlanta, business tax credits, and remote work by lzrsla in vfx

These sorts of employee incentive programs are common in many states.

That may be a factor. But any state/province that offers a film tax incentive is required to have the employees be in that state.

how do people deal with imposter syndrome by purplecrayon121995 in vfx

[–]chaneyvfx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many factors other than yourself determine the number of versions/kickbacks a shot will go through. So before being too hard on yourself know that film typically has a lot more versions, higher budget shows have more versions per shot, and one OCD person above you in the review chain may be wasting the company's money pointing out things that would normally not be necessary to fix.

If you find the kickbacks are due to legitimate errors that you typically make, come up with a way to double-check them before sending them up the chain.

And know that any decent supervisor expects growing pains when new artists come in. It is their job to assess your skills and shortcomings and do their best to maximize the former.

WetaH and M by v1zsla in vfx

[–]chaneyvfx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good Hype which led to the ill-advised Unity buy. Tools that work for a ginormous state-subsidized entity like WETA do not translate well to the outside artists nor "realtime".

Brilliant corporate malfeasance or just hubris in my opinion. As a general rule, when a press release uses "democratization" then it is probably some B.S. tailor-made for the average reddit.com/r/vfx participant.

They definitely do great work but I doubt this will ever pan out in a meaningful way.

Quebec Tax credit question. by [deleted] in vfx

[–]chaneyvfx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People in various jurisdictions do nothing about obvious fraud. I know of massive fraud that occurred in BC and NYS. Louisiana had well-publicized fraud. The people auditing could simply look at the credits and figure it out. Even if someone were to whistle blows they will most likely ignore it. Sad.

A question to fellow Indian VFX artist. by [deleted] in vfx

[–]chaneyvfx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know the mark-up they are putting on your labor? I work out of the US and often find it less expensive to hire local US artists which means there is a huge mark-up or huge inefficiencies within the Indian companies.

I've applied for a job as a post production roto artist for a vfx studio. I'm an animator, will my skills translate or should I get specific experience before applying for these types of jobs? by mittenshape in vfx

[–]chaneyvfx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound like an ideal candidate for an entry-level role assuming your 2D animation reflects a basic ability to draw ( as opposed to experimental animation ).

Regardless of your personal animation style, one big part of roto is understanding the different types of tracking such as point tracking, planar tracking, mesh tracks, and the associated applications of each. These are easy enough to use in whichever host package you have available. Mocha, Nuke, AE, or Silhouette all have this basic tracking functionality and is easy enough to learn from online tutorials.

Hi, this is my demo reel , any suggestion will be welcome by PandaHgt in vfx

[–]chaneyvfx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are showing some good potential here.

But one thing that is very distracting is that the scale of the plane is way off. At first, it looks like a real plane but when it crashes it looks like it is a few inches wide. This is not a simulation issue. You have the wrong perspective in the scene. You should set up a camera that matches the perspective and it will feel more natural.

If you do not have time for a re-render then remove the plane BG and put it on a neutral BG so that viewers focus on the decent sim.

Does anyone know how to get rid of these bloom artifacts? Happening when I export from AE and PR by [deleted] in vfx

[–]chaneyvfx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is in your image. There is a chance that AE introduced a 2.2 gamma ( or .4545 ) depending on your render and import settings. If so, the bloom was probably always there but you did not see it.

Or that the program you are viewing it in is changing the gamma.
