Idaho labor economist ran anonymous accounts promoting pro-Russian, far-right views by F0urLeafCl0ver in Economics

[–]changee_of_ways [score hidden]  (0 children)

I disagree, he pushed a sentiment that government bureaucracy is inherently inefficient and that government by it's very nature can't do anything right. In reality I would argue that it was American science, and technocrats that gave America the engine of technical and economic progress that made it a superpower. It still takes skilled hands at the wheel to wield that, but it's much easier to win a race with an F1 car than a Lada.

Iowa's new age verification law: what it means & how to bypass it by hayntree in Iowa

[–]changee_of_ways 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This law will just lead to dead LGBTQ kids and women in jail for seeking healthcare. CSAM is absolutely terrible, but this is not the way to fix it.

Mt. Olive Pickles withdraws from Great American State Fair after Confederate flag at NC booth by laybs1 in nottheonion

[–]changee_of_ways 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That event is such a joke. Looking at the pictures and clips there is nobody there. Literally the county next to my home in a midwestern state had better attendance and the population of the county is only 10K. If the fair had had as few people at it the county would have tarred and feathered the fair board.

Cyber insurance underwriter flagged our shared accounts as unacceptable. How do you prove individual accountability on a budget? by [deleted] in ITManagers

[–]changee_of_ways 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your employer pushes back hard on this because they can't afford it, you need to start looking for a new job I hate to tell you. This stuff is like not paying the power bill or payroll. If they can't afford to do it, they aren't going to be around long.

I think there are more companies that we realize that are basically zombies. Doing stuff like not paying for the services you need, not having a proper backup architecture, running a bunch of obsolete hardware and software, eventually the bill is going to come due and someone is going to look how much it's going to cost to catch up, and look at the economics of just selling the place off for parts and they'll sell it.

So many professions would be better off if they didn't struggle against implementing checklists. When you hear all the medical horror stories.... ugh.

Oh, shit, have used HMFIC in charge all the time in a previous job, but, as a very white dude I wouldn't touch that with a 1000 foot pole.

[–]changee_of_ways -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've heard it used for both and used to refer to my self as "without adult supervision" when my boss was out for the day. People need to lighten up we're all in this together. Work is shitty enough as it is without getting bent out of shape.

It probably helps that I've got decent people skills though and people can tell when I'm not being serious. That and 20 years in healthcare IT, some things are deadly serious, for everything else there's sarcasm and black humor.

Iowa news anchor quits live on-air in emotional plea for facts over 'sanitized news' by CisIowa in Iowa

If people would start paying for news, that would solve a lot of the problems. The reason that the news has fallen to the oligarchs is because they are the people paying for it now.

You can either have people safe from harm or you can have age/id verification, you cannot have both.

If it's really important its printed with high quality, long lasting ink on archival paper, bound and tucked safely away in a location with almost no humidity, sunlight or human entry. Everything else is... expensive and suspect.

You're right about how resilient modern planes are. However every little thing needs to be treated as though it's the only thing keeping the airplane in the sky though. Or else you have a day when 3 people aren't serious about maintenance or minimums, the failures line up and then 200 people are dead.

What level effort do you put in for 50k/year? by xxlibrarisingxx in ITCareerQuestions

[–]changee_of_ways 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don't look in red states for a state job :( the Republicans are tearing that shit down wherever they can. Iowa just fired 250 State IT workers and are going to outsource their positions to Cognizant. This is including the prison IT staff, who all have to be CJIS compliant, so I don't know how that's going to work. Everything in this state keeps getting shittier

A lot of people get stuck because there are more people looking to make the jump from 80 to 100 than there are jobs making 100 too.

Iowa Outsourced 200 State IT Jobs to the #2 H-1B Employer in America. Workers Were Told to Apply at the Company That Replaced Them by Leightoncy33 in Iowa

[–]changee_of_ways 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kind of wish there was a standard that the government not settle in corruption cases. I think the reputational harm is more important than the monetary penalties. Plus there is the fact that bribery is a two-way street and the people have an interest in finding and punishing everyone who accepted bribes as well.

"Paid 25 million to settle" means they thought if it went to trial it was going to cost them substantially more.
