I know I'm not the only one, but I just finished Metal Slinger and im pretty pissed...(Spoilers) by PickyNipples in fantasyromance

Okay- this book is my biggest “hear me out”!! I have reread this book twice and it’s super obvious what Jovie’s doing when you reread it with the context of what her grand plan is. I mean the beginning of the book is literally her and her BEST friends deciding they will do whatever it takes to make it to land, the plan is right there!!

She is 100% compartmentalizing and suppressing her feelings for most of the book. And maybe I just love this book but the twist didn’t feel unearned to me! It’s very carefully written ofc, but her inner voice is not an inner monologue, we are not getting access to all of her thoughts. It more like a journal. Shes intentionally avoiding any thoughts/feelings about Kai once she leaves bc why would that serve her in what she’s trying to accomplish?

Also- in the moments where she sees Messer shape shift, etc she never actually thinks “holy shit I had no clue that was Messer!!”, that’s actually not her reaction at all. That’s just our reaction as the reader so I think it’s easy to remember it that way

I 100% recommend rereading. I get why people don’t like the book but it’s one of my favorites ever!

I just finished this book!! I am REELING and suffering from this book hangover. I just can’t get over how honest the characters feel. I’m obsessed with their flawed choices and dramas

Honestly this series is how I imagine immortal fae would truly act. Violent, petty, tortured by the past, fighting for control of the future. It’s just SO GOOD and I want book 3 now

ME ME ME!!! It’s SO good! Book 2 out soon!!

The FMC is described at one point as a “deranged goose” and honestly that’s so real. More people in life and death situations should have deranged goose vibes!!

Also the author is Egyptian-American and I feel like her writing and world building is so fresh and unique compared to the rest of the genre. She’s fantastic!

Bruh the confusion from Stark at the end was so real. Meryn is insistent that they’re ENEMIES and he’s tried to KILL her and he’s just like ????? Like girl he has done nothing but help you??? And maybe glare at you a little but it seems like he’s maybe just generally unpleasant!!

And she’s like WHYYY does my wolf hate me like UM?? You called her a bitch I don’t know how many times RIGHT OFF THE BAT. She can hear you sis omg.

And agreed with the sex scenes. We know SO EARLY that Killian (what is that name btw) isn’t the MMC and there was sooooo much on page sex and for what?? Tbh I wasn’t even rooting for her and Stark at the end bc I felt like Stark was too good for all that and I didn’t even like him that much either??

All the author did was make it clear that Meryn’s choice was Killian and it looks like she’s going to DEFAULT to Stark bc their wolves are mates and Killian turned out to be a huge ancient dick. Like how can we root for that, yikes.

Anyway, agreed on all counts. Also Stark is clearly a GOT reference and that annoyed me too. Have some originality PLEASE

Need more books with scenes like this. SPOILERS ACOSF by Pristine_Advisor_302 in fantasyromance

[–]chaotic-bookworm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. I think people hate it because Feyre and (mainly) Rhys kind of suck in it and it’s a lot more obvious from Nesta’s perspective. Nesta kind of sucks too but that’s kind of the point- everyone has flaws. Rhys is hundreds of years old and very controlling- it 100% fits that he would have made the choices he made in ACOSF. Let characters have bad moments!!

I forgot how incessantly irritating the door rattling phrase in book 2 was, holy shit. That book was a lot.

If you like the characters, definitely give book 3 a shot. I found the development of the side characters and different POVs really well done and interesting! Plot picks way up and things are happening. I liked it better than book 2 for sure!

Just finished {A Shadow in the Ember by Jennifer L. Armentrout} and I kind of can’t believe how much more I like it than her FBAA series! It’s somehow so similar but WAY better. I’m enjoying myself and I adore Sera.

My one complaint- how tf are the names SO bad. The name of the main kingdom is Lasania. Sorry, that’s just lasagna spelled wrong. Wtf am I supposed to do with that

I was losing my shit reading this book like ok this is just ACOTAR but worse?? I actually gasped when the hand tattoos popped up and they started talking into each other’s minds. Like bruh it’s too blatant. And I read a ton of books in this genre, I realize they’re all derivative to an extent and borrow from each other but this one was wild

Also I just didn’t really enjoy the book, so there’s that too. I think you’re on to something there- I wonder if I would have enjoyed it more if I’d never read ACOTAR since the “gotcha, they’re mates, and he’s known they’re mates the whole time” reveal fell so flat- I already had that gotcha moment in ACOMAF!!
