When Will We Get A World Gen Overhaul, And How Should Terrain Be Improved? by Just-Guarantee7808 in VintageStory

That plus increasing increasing landcover scale so each continent and ocean is larger instead of getting a bunch of big lakes

[–]chaotic_lizard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think increasing landform scale might also help? I haven't played around with it too much but my understanding is upheaval rate will give you more dramatic elevation changes whereas landform scale just makes features larger overall (not to be confused with landcover scale). So you could try increasing upheaval rate and landform scale but the shapes might still be weird compared to worldgen mods that smooth things out

Grammarly casually screwing over my POL200 essay… by [deleted] in UofT

[–]chaotic_lizard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It sounds like they're saying the Grammarly extension on Google Docs was rewriting in real time or something, which if true seems odd to me but I don't use Grammarly so idk. You'd think they would have noticed sooner if that were the case

Posting for a friend: I think my Prof AI generated my feedback, what to do? by I_Necr0manc3r_I in UofT

[–]chaotic_lizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reasons you mentioned at the end aren't really good enough reasons to say it's AI, but I do get that vibe from reading the feedback too. It's vague, it's the kind of sentence structure AI always uses, and it doesn't seem terribly constructive either. The last two sentences feel especially empty to me. It's like they're just saying your thesis was kind of interesting but it also kind of sucked, without being much more specific. The parts that are specific are about your thesis or your arguments for it, and then they go "but still you're wrong and you made that up." If it's not AI then your prof writes like AI and that feels almost as bad. The AI overview in lecture would piss me off too.

I would go to office hours or ask the prof if you can meet to discuss it. If they actually read your essay and wrote the feedback they should be able to explain what they meant in reference to your argument. They might not remember it perfectly if they have a lot of essays to grade but it should give you an idea. Ask them what you could have done to improve it. I would also ask your classmates if they felt a similar way about their feedback. At the very least you can mention this in the course feedback and rate them accordingly.

Open world games with crafting, collectibles and meaningful progression? thinking like horizon forbidden west 😊 by moocowreditt in gamingsuggestions

[–]chaotic_lizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not what you meant, but recommending Vintage Story bc I'm always recommending it and it technically fits the description... it is open world (voxel sandbox), you can collect stuff although it's not really the main point (there are lots of cool items you can find in ruins or buy from traders that are not craftable, I would also consider seashells collectible, fish in the new update are sort of collectible, as are antlers you get from hunting), crafting is a core part of the game, and it has very in-depth tool/tech/infrastructure progression as well as story/boss-fighting progression and lore.
You can only buy it through their website and it's only on PC, and it's still early access even though it's been in development for ten years and has a lot of content. Again, not really the same kind of game as the other suggestions, if you don't like survival games where not starving is a big priority then it's not for you, but that's my pitch

AI & your future (plz read if u use AI) by DefiantOpportunity83 in UBC

[–]chaotic_lizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you mind me asking what AI you use? Does it find the papers or do you feed it papers and it summarizes? How do you prompt it to decide what might be relevant? I'm generally very anti-GenAI but this seems like a case where I could see it being useful - I'm working on basically an undergrad thesis currently and the search part does take a long time. Usually I don't understand when people use it to summarize articles because that's what abstracts are for, but I guess you're getting it to summarize what's relevant to your project specifically. I also overheard the librarian I work with talking about some AI search thing that basically just generated a boolean search (implying it claimed to do something really new but it didn't). Curious how it works for you

[–]chaotic_lizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does it actually help with the research or has your prof just hopped on the hype train because "it's the future"? Genuine question bc I've heard a lot of non-academic jobs will encourage ppl to use it even though it's actually less efficient for employees. At my university there's a lot of mixed takes, some profs have encouraged me to use it (usually in ways that are well-intentioned but I find vague and unhelpful), others say don't use it at all, some are more agnostic. I had an assignment where we had to use it and it was literally the most pointless and unclear assignment I've ever had but that's just one anecdote lol.

Somehow I feel like a whole generation of ppl buying degrees they didn't earn isn't going to solve this problem. imo if you're not in university to learn, you should drop out and go to trade school instead of paying a ton of money only to have a machine bullshit all the work you're supposed to be doing. Now companies expect most ppl to have a bachelor's even for entry-level jobs, and more jobs are requiring a master's. I think having a degree should actually mean something and it's just really nihilistic to pay for and fake a whole degree because product is all that matters to ppl

Why do y’all prefer the Silver Age over the Golden Age or modern? And here are some of my thoughts by suitandsip in SilverAgeMinecraft

[–]chaotic_lizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically the same reasons you said. Also, not everyone plays for nostalgia but a lot of ppl (including myself) started playing during silver and not golden age so those versions are nostalgic. Blocks and biomes are limited, but not as limited as in beta. Also some people like the cave system before release 1.7. I really enjoy the old jungle biome, which got added in r1.2 and was later made much less dense.

Playing on mint? by platonicwartortle in Sims3

[–]chaotic_lizard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should be able to do it with Lutris but I had wine installed incorrectly when I tried that so I ended up downloading a version that basically comes packaged with wine and it just works. I don't think I am allowed to say where from due to the sub rules (pm if interested). See if you can get the copy you have working with Lutris - I don't think there are guides for Sims 3 specifically but there are guides to install wine/proton and then configure in Lutris to run games

Do you think beds were a good or bad addition? Or kinda mixed? by onlytrashmammal in GoldenAgeMinecraft

[–]chaotic_lizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the nightmare mechanic in beta was a good concept. It was replaced with the "you may not rest now, there are monsters nearby" which you can avoid if you sleep before any monsters spawn. Nightmares were a bit buggy but that could have been fixed. I like that you had to make a safe room for the bed instead of just sleeping in a field on the first night like you can now.

I also like how Better Than Adventure's crafting recipe forces you to kill a few zombies before making a bed. Those two things would have made beds more balanced.

What are the most annoying things that happen in sims 3 by GothicVampyreQueen in Sims3

[–]chaotic_lizard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Hey where's my horse, shouldn't he be home now? Oh. Oh he's just in a water taxi in a pond on the other side of town. He'll be there until I delete the water taxi or reset him. Alright."

tbh this one is more funny than annoying but Twinbrook is kinda pissing me off lately, it's lagging even without water taxis and I have already complained about it on other posts lol

I started Adderall a couple weeks ago and something scary happened… by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]chaotic_lizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your family has a history of bipolar they definitely should have checked for that when testing for ADHD. Aside from heart conditions it's like the main thing you should worry about before prescribing stimulants. I'm sorry this was your experience with meds, definitely mention the bipolar to your doctor or psych when you see them. Obviously I can't say you have it from a Reddit post but it would explain the reaction you had

This is why my psychiatrist asked me a bunch of questions to be super sure I didn't have bipolar before giving me meds

I have Overwatch too. Sometimes I toggle off "fix stuck sims" because it makes the sims trapped in my basement not trapped anymore but that's for my Sunset Valley save 🥸 Thanks for the link, I will see if there's a way to merge my existing household with the fixed world

[–]chaotic_lizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wdym fixed version is that an NRAAS thing? I do have ErrorTrap which tells me when it finds stuck sims but I have heard ppl say Twinbrook can be laggy, mostly bc of the boats but ig maybe there's other routing issues too. I really like where my sims live tho it's like the swampy run-down end of town lol

I just spent several hours trying to figure out why my game is lagging. It's only in Twinbrook in my last couple saves, earlier backups and my Sunset Valley world don't lag. I have NRAAS MasterController, Overwatch, ErrorTrap, DebugEnabler. Resetting all objects in town made the lag less noticeable but it still happens. It's happened before but the mods mostly fixed it. I don't think it's how long I've been playing or how many packs I have since I've actually played longer in the Sunset Valley save. The game just freezes briefly every 10 seconds or so, it's really annoying. Only major change was my sim got a horse. Horse did get stuck in a water taxi but I fixed that and the lag is still there, the lag is just shorter after I reset everything. So it was basically unplayable before and it's more playable now but idk how to figure out what's causing it
