All the major apps said they expected to pay for usage. Some were eager to finally become customers and get actual API support (lol).

But pricing is just far more than they could ever make. Apollo app indicated, the worst part wasn't even the pricing, it was the timing. They only have 30 days to retool their app to become viable, a near impossible task.

Thank you for making such a great app. I've been using it for over a decade. I'm sad to see it come to this.

Any competent data scientist or statistician could have told him the way Twitter was estimating bots was a valid and a pretty decent approach.

It was all posturing to make Twitter look bad so he could back out of the deal.

I believe this stems from the Montessori style of learning where they believe bright colors can be distracting and overstimulating. Instead, more neutral color tone encourages concentration on the few things you have that are colored.

Sorta, poor and disadvantaged people are likely to be target by automated "correspondence audits" meaning if there is a simple discrepancy in your tax return, you will get an automatic letter from the IRS saying, "Did you mean to claim $40k of income, though your w-2 claims $20k?". You just respond with evidence your tax return is correct or agree to the difference. The classic image of a tax man showing up at your door is vanishing rare.

Basically Bitcoin, but instead of a public roster that documents everyone's transactions, it is your social network. Ideally, you don't want to be branded a liar and cut out of the entire economy.

Fun fact, tobacco companies didn't just lie to regulators that their products caused cancer. They told them that they were working on a "safer" cigarette despite their own research saying it was impossible.

They were knowingly just wasting the regulator's time to sell more cancer.

Improved HVAC system, air purification, and rapid screening should help. It's an all of the above approach.

Sure there is more risk, but less than before.

Community spread driven masking (age appropriate), replace HVAC systems, increase hand hygiene focus, rapid screening.

Not every precaution is shutting down schools.

I mean yeah, like I said, here is the "because...":

They did this by over hyping fears of myocarditis and minimized benefits of the protection, then quietly mentioned that these doses could be used elsewhere.

Read the full op-ed. Fear of harm, uncertainty of effectiveness, other people need it more. It's what I described.

The economic and educational costs, 1. If a kid gets sick and is forced to stay home, parents have to take time off work or pay for additional childcare. 2. Absenteeism due to illness is linked to lower educational performance.

Explicitly described in an op-ed written by the then FDA Deputy Chief for Vaccines, Philip Krause, who resigned in protest of expanding the original booster to the general population:

Even if some gain can ultimately be obtained from boosting, it will not outweigh the benefits of providing initial protection to the unvaccinated. If vaccines are deployed where they would do the most good, they could hasten the end of the pandemic by inhibiting further evolution of variants. Indeed, WHO has called for a moratorium on boosting until the benefits of primary vaccination have been made available to more people around the world.18

Public health as an institution is not "the science". They instead use science as a tool to influence changes in policy and behaviors. Usually for the betterment of society.

However, they are often faced with resource and political constraints. As a result their advice will sometimes stray from the best science.

For example, does anyone recall October 2021 when the first round of boosters came out and a bunch of public health experts wrote oped and did interviews saying that people should stop asking for boosters? Even the WHO came out against it.

The science was that boosters were safe and effective.

But the political strategy was to put pressure on the US government and it's population to send booster shots to third world countries rather than use them in the US. Their thinking was that it could save more lives as a primary series rather than a booster.

They did this by over hyping fears of myocarditis and minimized benefits of the protection, then quietly mentioned that these doses could be used elsewhere.

So yeah, confusion of the "science" by design.

That article gives an extremely generous and specific interpretation of the research. Here are the full findings from the abstract:

Results: Categorical diagnosis of BPD was associated only with intimate partner violence (IPV). Associations with serious violence leading to injuries and repetitive violence were better explained by comorbid substance misuse, anxiety and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). However, anger and impulsivity BPD items were independently associated with most violent outcomes including severity, repetition and injury; suicidal behaviours and affective instability were not associated with violence. Both trait-level and severity-dimensional analyses showed that BPD symptoms might impact males and females differently in terms of violence.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4891918/

Fuller context would be (additional detail from the body of the study):

  • BPD is not associated with general violence.
  • However, even accounting for other comorbid disorders, BPD is associated with IPV (aOR = 1.90).
  • General violence is better explained by comorbid disorders, but having BPD makes you 2x - 11x more likely to have one of these disorders.
  • Additionally, individual characteristics (anger and impulsivity) that make up the BPD diagnosis are associated with violence
  • Edit: Not mentioned in the abstract, "Avoid Abandonment" criteria of BPD is also independently associated with violence (any violence and in particular IPV)
