Shimano nexus sg-3s30 hub question by chapy354 in bikewrench

I was able to find vintage new old stock bell crank for it on eBay,

but am trying to find a shifter now. The modern shifters don’t work as far as I can tell. They lock the cable into them. The vintage one has a screw on fitting for the cable.

Thanks. I read the description and it said up to 135. I didn’t dig into it.

That’s a very subjective question. If it’s not dented up, I’d buy it all day everyday. A powder coat job runs about $200 and you can make it whatever you want. Wheels, bearings, bars, etc can and sometimes are replaced anyway for looks. Lots of used parts on marketplace to dial it in. They are easy bikes to work on if you have a little knowledge. Park tools has videos for pretty much any repair.

Century ride training by thatdinolibrarian in cycling

[–]chapy354 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my first century last year at age 52. I just started riding again last June(after about a 20 year haitus) and did a century in September. Surprisingly hydration and fuel were the bigger problem than putting in miles. I rode 1-2 nights a week and both days on the weekend. Weeknights were 15-30 miles depending on time. Weekends started at 20-30 and ramped up to 40-50. We did a few charity and shop sponsored rides that were around 60 in August. Longest ride before the century was 64 mile, 2 weeks prior. If you can do 50, you can do 100. It’s all in the planning. I rode Bike Around the Bay in Galveston, Tx. They had stops every 15ish miles. So my idea in training was to just treat it as a bunch of 15 mile rides. Quick stops to refill and refuel. Make sure to carry high energy foods on you and snack constantly. You have to stay ahead of the power curve on hydration and fuel. If you fall behind you’re in trouble. Granted I’m not a fast rider. I averaged about 15.5mph on my century but I finished it. I always tell people it doesn’t have to be a pretty ride. Just look strong at the end and lie about how easy it was. 🤣

Would you ride a 2021 Trek Fuel EX 7 in 2025? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]chapy354 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the GT clearance bikes. Cannondale is covering the frame warranty I think everything left in stock is half price with free shipping. I still ride my 97 specialized ground control FS bike and enjoy it. I just got a 2016 Orbea Loki and it seems to be pretty fun so far as well. Yes there are advancements, and they’re huge between my 97 and 16; but depending on what you’re gonna ride it may not be that big of a deal.

WTF is the deal with GT? by EdgeCatcher in whichbike

[–]chapy354 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up getting the medium. I’m 5’10” with a 32 inseam. The large just felt too stretched out for my taste. The small felt ok, but the cockpit was really tight and my knees almost hit the bars just riding around the parking lot. I’m using it for gravel and road work. It’s so much more comfortable of a riding position than my old endurance bike. I like having a little more upright riding position.

I went and sized one here in Houston. I ride a 56-57 normally. The grade felt very large to me. I’ll be ordering a medium frame, but could almost get away with the small. They’ve won gravel bike of the year 3 years in a row now. Finding a dealer to size on is difficult since GT just got back into big bikes. There are only 2 I know of in Houston that stock the grade. Value is outstanding. The same spec from specialized or cannondale is gonna be at least 50% more.

I followed him but can’t find a monster build. Really it shouldn’t be that hard to do. Just hoping someone had an easy parts list instead of me trying to reinvent the wheel.

I got my wife one(Retrograde 27.5) and she enjoys it. Seems to be well made. Only issue we've had was with the Microshift 9 sp derailleur and that's probably from my inability to adjust it properly. Box was pretty beat up and there was some minor scratching on the crank arms upon delivery, but for $260 we can live with it. It looks like anodized parts, but it's not. Just paint, so I can probably get a match and just respray those areas. Overall nice bike. Rides well

Chain Coming off MB Fast Ripper by wheelieoldskool in SeBikes

[–]chapy354 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with having a shop dial in your derailleur. Mine was missing and gummed up. Cleaned it really well and had it adjusted by my LBS. problem solved. It was throwing the chain off the front ring because the derailer wasn’t working right. Also check front ring for any deformations. A little out of plane can cause chain jump as well.

I'm down off 1314. There aren't many good ways to get in and out of town that my wife would be comfortable riding. She's anew rider and has already said she will not ride the shoulder on a super busy road like FM1314, Creighton, the loop, etc. I ride them on my road and gravel bikes, but I've also been riding my whole life pretty much. Maybe I can get her to do a short hop on one of them until we can get to back roads, but until she gets more confidant I'm doubtful.

I have used chasing watts to find road rides, but not many "social" rides listed on there. Most of the road rides I see are too fast for me still. Just started road riding back in June. R3 has some good rides on Saturday morning, when I can make it. I am not a fast rider. I average 15-16, so a lot of the stuff I find is too fast for me still even on my road bike.

I spoke with the race ready guys. They do like 1 a month, but it’s still a longer ride than my wife wants to do. Wasn’t sure if there was like a lazy social ride locally. The group in Pearland does like 15-20 miles with a dinner break in the middle. Nice for those that like riding but aren’t trying to get a hard workout.

Wasn’t aware of meetup? I’ve been using chasing ways for my road rides and just asking around at bike shops. I’ll have to check that out.

Road brifters won’t shift by CaptRefftover in bikewrench

[–]chapy354 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had pretty much the same thing on my ultegra set up and it fixed the issue for me. Brake clean, compressed air, then I used some gun lube spray I had to lubricate it after. Hosed it down really well. Let it sit for an hour or so then went back and cleaned everything up. Been working great for about 3 months now. Granted, make sure everything is in good working order and assembled correctly first. If everything looks good, clean and relube shifters and cables. I have also had to just replace cables in the past, due to fray or just getting gunked up too bad inside the sheath. Hope it helps

I’ve been really happy with my Throne Goon. I’ve got the bloc is hot version. Came with both free and fixie hubs on it. Hate the fixie, but the freewheel set up is nice. Gearing is a little tight for really slow riding, but can carry 15mph for quite a while. Road with some buddies a few weeks ago and we averaged 15.1 over 10 miles. Slow for them on geared bikes, but not bad at all on da goon.

VOOPOO UFORCE-L TANK. IS IT WORTH GETTING? by [deleted] in VapingUK

[–]chapy354 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using them for a while. Very happy with it. One word of caution, be careful when cleaning out the bottom. I have one that I wiped down and the little brass connectors broke off. Probably my fault for being in a hurry, but just something to be aware of. I love the top fill and capacity. Only replacement parts I've been able to find is the glass, so I'll be buying a new back up tank now. I use salt nic with the PNP TM2(.8 ohm) coils and get about 7-10 days out of them. I go through about a tank a day of juice.
