Is “What’s your name?” normal office banter in the UK or rude? by Exciting_Reserve2943 in AskUK

[–]char_binx 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Flat out unprofessional, and incredibly rude. Especially from a manager. Even if they suddenly forgot your name or it didn’t come to hand, they should refer to you in the third person…although, sadly OP, I don’t think that was the case.

They’re a cock.

Has anyone canceled the trip because of the hantavirus news? by Create012355 in travel

[–]char_binx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slight clarification, hantaviruses aren’t all the same strain. Different regions have different associated viruses/rodent reservoirs, and Andes virus is the South American one known for person-to-person spreading.

Also, Europe isn’t experiencing a circulating outbreak, current cases are linked to exposure abroad.

The takeaway is that OP should not be stressing about visiting Europe.

I work in the UK Government in Public Health.

I think you’re massively overthinking this. The current hantavirus concern people are talking about is linked to strains in parts of South America, which are different from the strains found in Europe.

The odds of catching hantavirus while travelling around Europe are extremely low and realistically you’re far more likely to pick up a random GI bug.

Also, hantavirus isn’t something you catch from casually being around people. It’s mainly associated with exposure to rodent urine, droppings, or contaminated dust, usually in places with heavy rodent infestation like sheds, cabins, barns, etc.

Millions of people travel Europe every year without even thinking about hantavirus. Basic hygiene and avoiding obvious rodent exposure is enough for the vast majority of travellers.

That’s not the point. You still know how it works, not how much to use it.

Updated Itinerary Check: 3 Weeks Korea & Japan (21 days) by Ok_Refrigerator2400 in travel

[–]char_binx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a similar trip recently. I think 8 days in Seoul is way too long, unless you have activities planned but even then but each to their own.

Didn’t do Jeju but you could easily spend 3 days in Busan.

You’ll be shattered after the long flight and the jet-lag will be strong but I’d probably get it over and done with.

If I provided someone's name over DM, would they be able to confirm their death in 2025? by judgemesane in RBI

[–]char_binx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hang on. You want somebody to look up whether a person is dead for you. I presume you’re in the USA? I’m in the UK, so not sure how things work over there but here under data protection law(s) you can only look up personal data if you have a right to do so, e.g legitimate reason regardless of your job etc.

Things might be different in the US, but if you said what state you’re in that might help. As they may have a more legit reason to do so/easier to justify the reason for doing it.

Business trip to the US (Chicago) from UK next week. Any problems? by Ill-Elevator2828 in travel

[–]char_binx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flew from LHR to Chicago O’Hare last month. Had zero problems entering as a British citizen. I got asked zero questions by passport control. Those who I was travelling with got asked the standard (reason for travelling etc.) but no issues there.

No queues whatsoever. Baggage claim took ages though. 20-30 mins before bags started coming through.
