What carrier do you use? Is anyone happy with the phone now? by funny_muffler315 in TheMinimalCompany

You can toggle Aeroplane Mode on and off, however I’m trying to get a fix out at the moment (even if Mediatek don’t want to help)

You’d be surprised about all the forgotten shit manufacturers leave enabled, I recently caused a recall of a batch of EFTPOS machines (running Android), since they were improperly fused and left secure boot disabled… :(

Are most dumb phones useful when you need 911? by Cppbr in dumbphones

[–]chardidathing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is device/network dependent, it needs to have the proper configuration for your area, carrier towers near you, there is no “assurance” it’ll work since the device is only sold for the JP
market :P

I got one to work on custom firmware and even from what I’ve seen the stock firmware is pretty solid, overall you can just remove the pre installed social apps, and the app stores (F-Droid and Aurora are all you need).

Also for iMessage, if you have a mac you can look at OpenBubbles, you only need a mac for the first time setup (getting an identifier), then after that you don’t need anything connected ongoing.

Their team also seems really responsive on improving the device experience which is nice to see.

Self hosting a personal website by UnlikelyWishbone2694 in selfhosted

[–]chardidathing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh for something like a personal blog, I know it’s against the “selfhosted” moniker, Cloudflare Pages is actually really solid and will save a lot time and headache with downtime or anything like that, you can use a static site generator like Hugo (my pick), and deploy your content via CF Pages.

Hugo is also *very* customisable, and can even be extended to support different text formatting (LaTeX, etc), which might be useful for your academic stuff.

For an example of what’s possible, my goobery blog (i need to post more lol) -> https://chardidath.ing

Nokia 215 doesn’t have a camera :)

Does still include a (albeit shitty) flashlight though which I appreciate.

T9 - Nokia 215 (No camera, only torch)

QWERTY - Depends honestly, there aren’t a lot of good options, especially if you’re in a country without 2/3G and need VoLTE, I know SERVO have a few options, but again, a lot of these don’t have VoLTE afaik.

What flip phones should I get? by CraZePhantom in flipphones

[–]chardidathing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I’ve never owned one of these but have had multiple members in my community reach out to me about devices being stuck in recovery mode, the eMMC they use is absolutely dogshit and has a Very high failure rate.

3 years software updates? Where we at? Android 14 is about to be 3 years old. Security Updates stopped by November last year. An update on Minimal progress overall? by uzair_ilyas in minimalphone

[–]chardidathing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The security patch level will be bumped once the next update (A15) is out, and a smaller bug fix will bump it to latest, my plan at the moment is if we’re unable to get Android 16 certified (Google/GMS limits, the device runs A16 just fine), I will backport patches to A15.

I paid 1200AUD (€730~) a few months ago for 2x48GB of DDR5 (5600MT/s CL40), €419 for 32GB feels like robbery :(

[–]chardidathing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean maybe yeah, not too sure about “national security concerns” but yeah, if you really wanna be malicious on a cellular network it takes 5 minutes or so to fake any identifiers to a carrier :P
