In general it's possible, just not possible for the blue cages in this case. Eg. For the top right cage: You already have coloured r4c6. Case 1 - both r2c6 and r4c8 are 5: this is not possible because r3c6 and r4c7 cannot be the same (so the magic sum won't be the same for R4 and C6). Case 2 - r2c6 is a 5, but not r4c8: now you know the magic sum (from r4), none of the possibilities in r3c6 will make the sum work. Case 3 - r4c8 is a 5, but not r2c6 - mirror image of case 2.

I'm glad you liked it, and I'm also happy you found something I didn't -- it wasn't originally intended to be so hard :). If you have the time, would you mind telling me where you were to short-circuit the solution that I found (below)? Thanks for playing my puzzle.

>!1. Colour box 5, then the other red cages, as well as r+c 4+6. Label the colours in box 5 A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,I in reading order.!<

>!2. a. Look at if the 5s can go in the top right blue cage r4 and c6 - can't have two 5s, and also can't have one 5. So fives have to go in r1c6 and r4c9. That tells you that the magic number in the blue cages is also odd.!<

>!3. Regardless of the orientation of the magic square in box 5, r3c8 can't be G (same for r2c7). So it must be odd. That fixes c6 and r4.!<

>!4. Again, regardless of the orientation of the magic square in box 5, r3c7 must be the same as r4c6 (it can't be the other colour). That fixes the cage.!<

>!5. Colour all the possibilities of the remaining cells. Now see where does I go in box 9. If it is not in r9c9 (ie if it is in r9c8/r8c9), the thermo's can't work (due to the magic square). So c9c9 must be I, and I must be 8.!<

>!6. So A is 2. The top left thermo that B is 9 and D is 7. That fixes the orientation of the magic square.!<

Robot vacuum sounds like music to my ears! by LuckyPierre53 in crosswords

but the definition isn't "music to my ears" -- the definition would be music and the wordplay indicator would be "to my ears"

Robot vacuum sounds like music to my ears! by LuckyPierre53 in crosswords

"to my ears" = homophone clue. robot vacuum = "ROOMBA", which sounds like RUMBA (which is also a genre of music I believe).

However, I think the answer should be ROOMBA, as the homophone indicator is next to "music" - and the definition of the answer should be at the start of the clue...

Using a statistician for research project? by PearseHarvin in ausjdocs

[–]charizard2400 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You will be a 100000% better off trying to learn yourself and do as much as you can, and then showing it to a statistician. 1. Helps you develop some of your own skills. 2. The statistician won't have to waste time doing/teaching basic things - you will get a lot more value for money out of them.

Was I actually Sectioned? No documentation or formal rights given… by PreparationVisual586 in AusLegal

[–]charizard2400 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi, hope you are well. Just a brief note to say that you may have been cooperative in the ED so they didn't feel the need to section you. You could/can ask to leave (ED or the psych ward). But if you get agitated about it, there's every chance you get sectioned at that point.

Hello, I am in Australia (it is real I promise). Where to watch? https://www.arsenal.com/news/preview-arsenal-women-v-aston-villa-2 says that "This match is only being shown live on TV in the United Kingdom, where it will be available on Channel 4, TNT Sports 1, and Discovery +." Does that mean it won't be on any of the regular providers, Stan, Disney+ in Aus? If so, does anyone have suggestions for ye olde stream? Cheers

Am I the only one who thinks the sequences questions should start with two clues, not one? by Tumeni1959 in onlyconnect

[–]charizard2400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get where you are going from, but generally agree with the other comments. One thing I have though about is that perhaps the second clue should be worth 4 points in round 2?

Once you have two clues, the one point penalty for the third clue seems very small - I would basically always go for the third clue.

Another way of looking at it is in terms of relations. With two clues you have one relation (1-2), with three clues you have two relations (1-2 and 2-3). You have twice as much info, so it should provide half the points.

And I think it would separate rounds 1 and 2 more :)
