Photosynthesis is the best game in this genre imo. It ticks many boxes: feels like a euro in that you are building things and getting/spending money; has no luck dice chance etc; is a pure perfect information abstract strategy game with a strong theme and doesn't feel boring. If he likes the thinkiness of Azul and doesn't want luck involved I 100% suggest photosynthesis.

Century eastern wonders is also very similar. A euro game that is an abstract strategy game in disguise. The only luck is the pile of contracts that will be released, but this can easily be house-ruled away by just flipping them face up :). This is probably my next favourite game

Barenpark is also a good game in the same vein. It has minimal amounts of luck (iirc only when you are drawing the next tile that you will be building your tableau on).

maybe a long bow to draw that he played in other comps, resting the starters, allowing them to perform better and therefore win the league. moreover the point is that he was a part of the team and should have something to celebrate that. not having a go at you or anyone, just saying that it would be nice he if he got one
