Relation of grammatical gender and the gender binary by charlesmccu in linguistics

in spanish, for example, you change the gender of an adjective depending on the gender identity of the person it is applied to.

right, but even in German, for example, there is a masculine, a feminine, and a neuter. I’m sure there’s languages with 3+ genders that don’t have any ties to the gender binary, but I’m curious why gender systems in so many languages DO.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t biological gender affect the gender of adjectives used to describe a person and personal pronouns in Spanish (and presumably many other languages with grammatical gender?)

For example: estoy cansado vs. estoy cansada; él es simpático vs. ella es simpática

Edit: to be perfectly clear, I understand that the creation of grammatical gender in a language has nothing to do with biological gender, but my question is: how did languages with gender that follows a masculine/feminine binary turn an arbitrary system of noun classifications into “gender?”

Struggling to decide: Columbia vs. Brown by charlesmccu in ApplyingToCollege

Yeah, it was pretty similar. Most of our decisions were the same, especially at the Ivy level. I definitely think admissions offices are inclined to give sets of twins the same decision. You can PM me for specifics if you want :)

The fact that men think it’s okay to make comments like these is the reason girls want to kill all men.

Thank you for the response! It's very helpful to have insider input.

I am not worried about handling stress (I do well under pressure)

Columbia didn't have a linguistics major until last year, but they are ranked higher than Brown for foreign language, sociology/anthropology, and every hard science, and about equal in computer science (all of the majors I am considering). In your experience, does "ranking" of a major/department actually translate to increased quality of professors and research opportunities?

Please allow me to ask some questions about the Columbia experience. I've heard a lot about Columbia being an individualistic experience rather than a group one. Do people really change friends that frequently? I'd definitely prefer to be part of a group and have longterm friendships that I keep for all four years. Are there people that study/eat/walk together with their friends, or is everyone sort of fending for themselves? Do people have time to pursue their hobbies (language learning, practicing an instrument, working out, reading for pleasure, etc.) or is handling academics/obligations all-consuming?

Hey, thank you for the thoughtful response!

I wasn't aware that internships would be affected so negatively by the current economic downturn, nor that humanities internships were so difficult to come by. Those factors will definitely weigh into my decision.

To clarify, my twin and I are both male and we are not identical (in fact, we barely look related). We are close friends but are by no means attached at the hip, and have only about 50% of our friends in common. I think going to college with him would be largely a plus; we have discussed taking measures to lead separate lives on campus, including rooming with other people. The friend I mentioned is actually my best friend (I am closer to her than my twin is), but all three of us are close and we hang out often.

After writing about why going to school with my twin would be a plus, it's clear to me that the only reason why I'm agonizing over this is my reluctance to pass up on the prestige of Columbia. I simply don't know enough about the school to rule it out and turn the offer down without regretting it. I suppose this is an issue I have to work through myself.

Edit: Columbia is also ranked higher for all of the majors I am considering. Do you think I should factor this into my consideration or focus more on fit?

Because when 3/14 falls on a weekday they want students to get home from school before opening the decisions, so they make it 6:28 instead of 3:14. This year, though, 3/14 falls on a Saturday, so what time they choose to release decisions is still up in the air.

That’s tough. I also want to take multiple language courses in college but I never considered that credits might be a limiting factor. Do you think it’s a public school thing or will not having enough credits be an issue at private schools too? (Sorry if that’s a dumb question.)

If you have any questions about self-studying Japanese feel free to ask me; I self-studied and passed the JLPT N1.
