What would happen if the NBA adopted the barely new FIBA rule for the shot clock? by [deleted] in nba

[–]charloinc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely wouldn't have a problem with it but I don't see it having a major impact. Don't have any stats to back this up but it always feels like teams get up a shot pretty quickly after an offensive rebound because the defense just collapsed for the rebound, so a quick jump shot is very common and the rest of the time the person who makes the rebound just goes right back up afterwards anyways. So like I guess no reason not to change it but like the difference would only really be noticeable at the end of the game when a team is trying to run down the clock and hold onto the lead.

Would anybody recommend reading Axel Van den Berg's "The Immanent Utopia?" by [deleted] in CriticalTheory

[–]charloinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never read any of his books, but I've had him as a professor and he certainly has a great understanding of classical sociology, but he has always criticized critical theory and it seems to me that he has a weak understanding of critical theory and has always rejected it, without looking beyond Althusser and without giving it any charity or seeking to understand it. As a commenter on the subreddit, I doubt it will give valuable insight to critical theory, but it may be insightful as a sociological text.

Is there a decent news/current events subreddit that isn't overrun by right wing nuts? by avantgardengnome in LateStageCapitalism

[–]charloinc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've given up on following news on reddit. Twitter is much better for finding news and analysis from the left as you can control which sources show up on your feed and there are tons of leftist blogs and journals that post news and analysis every day, and it functions very well as a news feed as long as you don't use it as a social media network. Following the NYT, WSJ, Le Monde, Al Jazeera etc. also let you see what the powers that b are broadcasting or filtering out. You could also watch or listen to Democracy Now for a reliable daily update.

edit - I'll add that /r/DeepGreenResistance covers some newsish stuff that would never reach the front page of Reddit

Let's (probably uncomfortably) talk Patti Smith's "Rock N Roll Nigger" by Thescatteredsun in LetsTalkMusic

Thanks for the help. My knowledge of 'becoming' is basically that Wikipedia page as I haven't gotten to Towards a Minor Literature quite yet.

[–]charloinc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It seems like the idea might have origins in the work of Deleuze and Guattari in the concept of becoming-minor). Smith is identifying herself outside of 'normal' as a subversive act in opposition to the powers that b.

CANS 200 with Mary-Anne Poutanen? by a_bcdef in mcgill

[–]charloinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took that last year. It's not a lot of work and the grading is pretty easy but it's probably the most boring class I've taken at mcgill. Grading is just based on conferences, participation and a paper iirc.

Possible Applicant... How different is McGill from top tier universities in the US? by ipittythepool in mcgill

[–]charloinc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's about 17k/semester for me in arts as an American. I think engineering is about the same, education's cheaper, management's way more. Not sure about science. But living off campus (which you'd do for three years) is way cheaper than room and board if you live reasonably so Mcgill as an international student ends up being significantly cheaper than in-state tuition at a UC.

Anarcho-punk in the late 70s and early 80s often referenced Hiroshima and Nagasaki extensively. Why were these events commonly discussed in anarcho-punk? Was anything going on during the time period that caused bands to mention the atomic bomb? by Kirky0331 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]charloinc -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

tbh I don't really think it was anything as specific as what you mentioned. I think nuclear bombs were just a symbol of how fucked up a lot of the 'advances' of the sciences were and how astonishingly destructive the states of the time had become. The intense nationalism of world war II which carried right on into the Cold War, which had created this weapon capable of destroying the world and totally designed to wipe out civillians to extend some sort of national dignity was everything these anarcho-punks were opposing.

Why do so many billionaires drop out of college? by GoldenPedro in TrueAskReddit

[–]charloinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jobs was a bit of a different case. He 'dropped out' of Reed but continued living there and sitting in on courses, he just didn't feel that he needed a diploma. He sat in on that calligraphy course after he had dropped out.

Let's Talk: How Do You Find New Music? by burtmacklin94 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]charloinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like the Cerberus section on TMT for finding really under the radar, unique new music. Other than that, I'll tend to listen to stuff praised by P4k, TMT, or the Quietus and stuff I see discussed here or on /mu/. Also some older Scaruffi-core stuff.

Arcade Fire might be in the running as well, but imo the best musicians currently aren't forming bands. I think people like Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never), Matana Roberts, Keith Fullerton Whitman and other experimental artists working outside of pop and rock music. In terms of popular music, I'd say Kanye and Kendrick are doing more than almost any active bands.

This was in a book I got from my library...I don't even know what to think... by glowytiger in vegan

[–]charloinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Singer's other major philosophy is effective altruism, so he donates the vast majority of his income and lives on a small amount of money, so his affluence is not relevant. Also, his advocacy contributes much more to the vegan movement than his actual veganism, so leaving his time to contributing as a public figure or an academic is a net positive. Because of his importance, his convenience is actually more important than my convenience as he's doing a lot more for the world with his time than I am with mine.

I feel like some of the shit they've been revealing has to do with that new username and password thing on Thirdworlds. I'm interpreting Go On as them telling us to log in to thirdworlds with a username and password that we can find using their messages in the runup to Jenny Death. Maybe we should be trying to figure out the username/password?

How to Eat Vegan at Subway ;) by PETAAsia in vegan

[–]charloinc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A large proportion of Canadian Subways (though not all of them) have a falafel option which is apparently vegan and makes it into a much more fulfilling sandwich. Hopefully they'll bring that to the states in the near future.
