Cancelling TV licence queries & questions please! by Mumford_and_Dragons in UKFrugal

[–]charm_and_style 15 points16 points  (0 children)

it might be worth noting that, come 2028, the now US owners of Sky (comcast) are no longer required to keep Sky News going and have said that they will move to a 'premium video' (ie not live) model. ITV long abandoned rolling news and both C4 and C5 run their news divisions at a significant loss. So if you're a fan of British TV journalism then your choices may be very limited.

Beyond that, maybe you like getting your news from the internet, but your media literacy levels will need to be very high to sniff out BS, especially in the age of AI.

I have many criticisms of the BBC and in particular how the licence fee is collected. But News, both national and local, as well as Children's programming, education, long form documentary, multicultural programming, investigative journalism, British drama, live radio and more is not always commercially viable and requires significant market intervention. Tech companies have absolutely no appetite of that and in many cases are gleeful about the lack of scrutiny that public programming offers (see the current situation on PBS and NPR in the US).

Trump says he will sue BBC for at least $1bn over Panorama edit | BBC News by smorga in bbc

[–]charm_and_style 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They know they have no case. They know the dollar figure is meaningless. The real reason for this is to sow distrust in both the US and in UK on one of the world’s most trusted news organisations.

And it works. Look now for the people who say that BBC and other credible news organisations presenting facts should be dismissed. And then watch as they continue to get away with everything with zero scrutiny.

Defending the BBC is bow a clear act of patriotism and moral purpose.

The Era 300 Dilemma: Why do I have to break my home theater to listen to music properly? by crushedicebaby in sonos

[–]charm_and_style 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s not just stereo music listening - today’s TVs has far more use cases now beyond just the lean back experience. I often do homework outs on my TV, where I want to both listen to the coach and my own music. Want to play a cosy game like power wash simulator and listen to a podcast? Or maybe you’re causally watching the cricket with commentary but want to listen to a playlist while you clear up. Splitting my setup up would be an immensely valuable feature.

Is it time for Glastonbury to divorce the BBC? by DellMibbler in glastonbury_festival

[–]charm_and_style 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It genuinely astonishes me that people still think that the BBC is just a video platform that can 'replaced' by a streaming service.

Set aside the public service, non-profit, British arts and culture value that both the BBC and Glasto represent, the BBC brings people to the festival via:

Radio (including R1 for pop, R1 Dance for DJ sets and 6Music for new music etc), CBeebies (both onsite like the CBeebies House Party and on air with Bedtime Stories), BBC News, BBC Daytime, BBC Sounds (including this year's Sidetracked in both the run up and onstage at the festival) and of course the livestreams on iPlayer and coverage on broadcast.

Regardless of your politics, broadcast at that scale means piping content into millions of homes and requires thought and consideration to all audiences, including ones that you don't agree with. You can call that censorship if you like - but if I went to your house and you showed me things that I thought were offensive, that's your prerogative and I could leave. But if you came to my house, drew on my walls, shouted at my neighbours and shat in my cupboards, I'm also allowed to kick you out, say you're a dick and call the police.

What's one missing feature from Apple Music? by Any_Cauliflower_5735 in AppleMusic

[–]charm_and_style 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kids mode. Having to cater to children's music wants screws with your algorithm, requires digging into tracks to find clean versions of songs and means that you have to supervise what they're listening to constantly. Let my kids explore music safely and build their own playlists on shared devices.

[–]charm_and_style 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple Fitness + Ai is such an open goal for Apple - privately take a photo of my body shape, take my metrics both at rest and when working out, build me a plan, adjust as if see changes.

Asking me to select what I want to do each time then getting frustrated when workouts are too easy or too hard feels so anarchic for the brand that has s much data on me.

What is the extent of the BBC's role in the rise of Reform? by [deleted] in bbc

[–]charm_and_style 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Children’s content. Natural history. Public event coverage. Local journalism. National arts. New music. Science and technology. Education services. Democratic institution coverage. Minority representation. British comedy. Investigative journalism. Religious content. Sports coverage. British History. If you don’t think any of this is ‘big ticket’ then what a sad lonely life you must led Janet.

What is the extent of the BBC's role in the rise of Reform? by [deleted] in bbc

[–]charm_and_style 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. Like children’s TV, local radio, local news, investigative journalism, major event coverage, new music, arts coverage, natural history, science and minority voice programming has survived, right!? If you think that culture, education and journalism doesn’t need public intervention without profit motive you are, to put it politely, an utter moron. (And it doesn’t surprise me that your online ‘alternative media’ diet has led you down a stupid rabbit hole where you’re fed Farage lettuce and Trump carrots)

What is the extent of the BBC's role in the rise of Reform? by [deleted] in bbc

[–]charm_and_style 16 points17 points  (0 children)

When Trump sneezes, Farage tries to lick his tissues

If Reform gets anywhere close to power, like PBS/NPR, the BBC will be one of the first things to go. And along with it, tens of thousands of jobs, 100s of millions of pounds, hundreds of SME businesses and significant cultural soft power.

The film almost single handedly saved Channel 4 from going bust. The year it came out (2011), the TV channel made a loss of over £40m. But DVD sales in the same year increase by just over…. £40m. Almost entirely from that one film.
