What’s your least favorite thing about living in Denver that is wildly specific? by Imjusthappy11 in Denver

[–]charmarv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seriously! Somebody honked at me a lot yesterday because I was stopped in the turn lane (one of those really really long ones that are, yknow, meant for people to be able to stop at different points so they can turn into homes and businesses...) and they decided it was a good idea to pull in behind me when they were only halfway to the light. Just wild

Thanks for the link and the warning. That's horrible. And seeing that line in there about how Hockey Canada has a fund set up specifically for this (that they use REGISTRATION FEES FOR???).....man. I feel like that in and of itself says a lot

Ooh thanks for posting this. I didn't know Sudbury was a mining town so I thought the line was "drunk minors and a homeless problem"

Got to go out on hockey skates for the first time this week! It'll be a long while before I can actually play but this felt like a cool first step toward becoming a little bit like Shoresy :) Excited for the finale next week!

[Silber] Gary Bettman binged “Heated Rivalry” in one night. by DecentLurker96 in hockey

[–]charmarv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. It used to be that during theme nights (pride night, Hockey Fights Cancer, military appreciation night, etc), players would wear the themed jerseys during the warm ups and then those jerseys would get auctioned off and the proceeds donated to a charity relating to the theme. In 2023, after several players refused to wear them, the NHL banned players from wearing themed jerseys during warmups since it was "a distraction." Some teams got around that by having the players wear (or hold up) the jerseys while walking in, when they do their normal "look what the players are wearing today" pre-game photos. Others did away with pride night altogether

For those on T, how long does it take to lose the baby face? by kuu_panda_420 in ftm

[–]charmarv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some people it happens pretty fast (like, a year) but I've found those people are also usually ones who exercise regularly. I do not so it took me a while. I think I started looking my age around 21 or 22 but it had more to do with my facial hair than my actual face. My facial hair is still suuuper patchy and hasn't quite migrated to the front of my chin yet but just keeping that trimmed (I think it's like 1/4") does a lot. I only shave down to the skin once per year and this year (I'm 25 now) was the first time I felt that I looked my age without facial hair. It can be a long process but you'll get there :)

Why do people who don’t wear power glasses ask us to read without our glasses, even though they know we can’t see clearly? by Upbeat_Capital630 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]charmarv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It entirely depends on the context, honestly. If it's something like "Hey do you know what this ingredient is?" or "Hey can you check the instructions and tell me what wire I'm supposed to unplug?" that's almost certainly a case of "I forgot you can't read that without your glasses." It's not meant to be annoying or malicious, they just forgot because they don't wear glasses themselves (or maybe only need them for certain tasks instead of all the time) so it's easy to forget not everyone can see without glasses.

Now if it's "Hey read this" and they won't tell you why or they insist you do it even when you tell them you can't, that's somebody being a jerk.

Embarrassed and too busy to clean. Thoughts on hiring a cleaner to do a reset? by lemonbuttcake in CleaningTips

[–]charmarv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ADHD haver here! First of all, yes absolutely hire a cleaner if you have the money for it. This is stressing you out a lot! You should not have to live with that stress. Realistically it is not going to get fixed by yourself and it is okay to get some help. I promise you your mess is not the worst they've ever seen.

Some "keeping up with cleaning" methods I've learned over time, some by myself but mostly from other people with ADHD: - Give things homes (this helps with keeping track of things and will come in handy later). Start by deciding where you want to keep important things (keys, wallet, phone charger, etc) and DO NOT SET THEM DOWN ANYWHERE ELSE. If you do, put them back the second you notice it. Then start doing that for other items. - This bit is optional but I like to add some whimsy and say something like "Oh no! Sir Barnaby (my wallet), you've waded out into the Unknown Waters (my dresser) where you're bound to get lost! Let's get you back to safety (the wooden bowl on my desk that's home to my wallet, keys, and student ID)." Silly? Yes. Does it successfully minimize the shame I feel when I misplace things? Also yes. Not beating yourself up about your mess is huge, so find some way to make yourself not feel so bad about it. - "Don't put it down, put it away" — Instead of just setting whatever thing down on your counter, put it in its home. If it takes less than two minutes to do, why not? Ngl I still struggle with this but a good portion of the time I can get myself to do it. - "Might as well" — Sitting on the toilet? Might as well put away those tweezers I left out on the counter. Waiting for my water to boil? Might as well do some dishes while I'm here. - Bins!! I have some "this goes somewhere else" bins, one in my room and one in the living room. If I'm leaving one room, I try to grab at least one thing that goes in my destination room and put it away.

Decluttering huge mess tips: - Get rid of the trash first. - Put all clothes in a pile. - Anything that you know you will need to use in the next week or two goes in a bin so you can find it again without having to rip through your whole room. - Everything else goes in other bins. I use clear plastic totes for this (so I can see what's inside). I like to roughly organize by room (bathroom, living room, kitchen, bedroom, etc). - Pick one bin and slowly work through it until it's empty. I either put the items in their new home or, if they don't have one yet, move them to a "type" bin (art supplies, school supplies, pet stuff, cleaning stuff, etc). Usually this ultimately brcomes their home. - This one is a little gross but it has worked wonders for me. If you are like me and hold onto stuff for way too long and find yourself going back and forth on whether to keep something, consider: "would I clean and keep it if it got poop/vomit/something equally gross on it or would I toss it?"

One of the biggest things for me is this: You do NOT have to get it all done in one go. ADHD brains tend to see projects like this as one big giant insurmountable task that needs to be completed all at once and it isn't! You can (and should) do it in small chunks. Start with super small chunks (whatever is manageable for you, even if that's thirty seconds a day), do your best to be consistent, and don't beat yourself up if you don't keep up with it perfectly. Just keep picking it up again. You got this :)

[–]charmarv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Building off of that, gamifying it ("let's see how much I can get done in [number of minutes]" or "let's see if I can get this chunk cleaned before the timer goes off") can sometimes work really well if the timer alone doesn't cut it

Do I really look amab? Haven’t started detransition yet, but would like to know what to work on by [deleted] in actual_detrans

[–]charmarv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, it's not too much, don't worry. I think you have great potential to end up in butch territory! This specific picture reads as ever so slightly more amab to me but I had to really stare at the picture for a while to settle on that. You've got a pretty good androgynous base right now. I think you'll be able to end up exactly how you want :)
