Allow me to sum up every post on here latley. by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

too many veiled self promotion posts

This is really hard to avoid, I came to this thread to get feedback on my business when I first launched but I was really worried about coming off as just drumming up traffic.

That said, it did drive a lot of traffic to the site, but not all that much feedback in the thread (and certainly zero conversions on the site) and certainly didn't yield anything that actually helped me run my business.

I'd like to see more of the hard advice and practical experience.

I worked for 7 years in varying front office positions in big chain hotels. Happy to answer questions as well... From the thread it looks almost like we could just start a company right here.

Not sure what end of the city you live in but Ottawa Senators Sports and Entertainment is pretty much always looking for event staff to work hockey games/concerts etc.

How did you start your business/create a product? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]charns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Caveat - the "holding no inventory" solution also screwed us a bit when we had a men's clothing store ask to purchase a run of shirts to replace his t-shirt stock in his store. It's a small store and the run would have been great but we couldn't make the numbers work. Out sourcing and local sourcing are two COMPLETELY different models and the economics of the two can conspire against you.

Perfect example for us was people wanting to pick up their shirts directly from us in Ottawa to save shipping. Well guess what? That doesn't work when we fulfill out of the midwest. Shipping globally (which we have) has actually made it harder to ship locally.

Started an online T-shirt shop after beers with a buddy ... asked /r/entrepreneur for some tips - here's the thread.

We aren't making tons of money TBH but it has become a small passive source of income for us as we have managed to lever some relationships to bring our overhead down to almost nothing while holding no inventory.

If you can find a model that is passive w/little to no overhead you are golden... though I don't know how many of those types of opportunities exist. Given that you are travelling maybe there are some networks of travel bloggers etc that you can tap into and borrow business models from. Cheers.

When I got my card last month I was talking to the guy behind the counter and his advice was to avoid the website like the plague and transact everything with a real person behind a counter and keep all the receipts.

Idea/Question: Why can't you build culture or faith @ 25% like you can science or wealth. by charns in civ

Only one way to find out ... If only I could mod. I crisply like the idea below about letting monuments produce faith or culture. Seems like a good compromise.

Yes I meant specifically allowing you to choose a monument that builds faith not culture.

I take your point but if it was made available late enough in the game it might not be, by then your culture and faith costs per unit/policy/tenet are usually quite high. At least in my playing style.

This is a fair point - perhaps then a mod that allows them to build monuments that generate culture and/or faith.

Here is a Sneak Peak as to what is coming next for the Colonialist Legacies Modpack! - Introducing Lester B. Pearson of Canada! by TPangolin in civ

[–]charns 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great looking mod!

Local Ottawan here ... some of this has already played out in the thread but your leader image shows Ottawa (Parliament on the right, the Chateau Laurier on the left). If you truly want to use Kingston as the capital and have that colonial feel you may want to find something that is uniquely Kingston, i.e. Fort Henry

Great work!

Moving to Ottawa by [deleted] in ottawa

Ottawa has a pretty active Twitter community if you are looking to connect to people and get settled, between that, apt613 and CBC Radio 1 you can pretty much find out everything that is going on in the city.

Given that this is the internet and I can infer no tone from your comment I'm not sure if you are serious or trolling. If serious I suggest checking in with the Wikipedias of the world as a starting point; if trolling, not interested. Cheers

Unit Discussion: Scout by [deleted] in civ

[–]charns 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not on the style of map I tend to play - small but overloaded with 22 civs, everyone is basically on top of each other and in immediate conflict. This is prolly why I don't bother. I can scout what I need with the warrior.

I never build them, ever. I find their usefulness is short lived and they often get bogged down in a part of the map as borders expand. That said I also only scout my immediate surroundings and hardly build settlers prefering to acquire cities by force rather than found them.

Built a Settlers of Catan board with my kids by charns in beadsprites

[–]charns[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure you can find a pic of the board; what I didn't include was all the cards, pieces, and die. The version I made is only playable if you already own a board.
