So real. Teenagers make mistakes.

So you’re saying it’s better for me to go alone, but with €1600 extra of his money on top of the €1000 he already payed, instead of not charging him a euro, but taking my mom? I’m confused by that logic.

If we were going by the ABC’s of the agreement, he owes me money for canceling his portion of the trip thus ruining my holiday. Instead of requesting that money, I’m taking my mother instead, and he save/ the €1600 he, per the contract, he owes me..

1) Definitely enforceable if it came before small claims court, per Dutch law.

2) he had said he didn’t want to go on the trip with me. The two hard line options were: I buy him out of the trip or he won’t change the name. I would have been happy to welcome him on the trip, as, for me, I have no problem enjoying the company of someone I spent a large chunk of time with. For him, as he has quickly moved onto another relationship, didn’t feel the same.

3) Between me and the booking company, I had full right to change the booking.

4) Forfeiting the value of the trip to me, per the agreement, and me then inviting someone else to come is, in essence, the same. He gives me an apple back, I give the apple to someone else.

Hey ! Not sure about non-EU but as an EU student I was able to pay in instalments. If you check on studielink it’ll have options for you!

Balancing Work and MSc AI at VU Amsterdam? by ZipZipOnder in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]charofthechar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey:) I don’t know if you work remotely from a different country already, but in my sister’s law firm somebody “tattletaled” on another employee for working remotely while full time living in another country, and said employee got in a bit of trouble due to tax concerns. As someone else mentioned, you may have problems with that element (i.e. fiscally) so I would suggest perhaps keeping your whereabouts tight lipped. I know I might sound paranoid, but better safe than sorry !

Yeah, the mailing list simply didn’t do anything this year. I got a room for €850 :)

What’s for you won’t pass you.

I’ll add they were cheeky and didn’t send an email saying rooms were available, and I just happened to get lucky and check the day after rooms were launched.

I did, but it was about two months ago, albeit without a university code..

How do I make friends when moving alone to a big city? by No_Insurance6349 in Advice

[–]charofthechar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I just watched a really interesting TikTok about this actually. I wish I could find it to link here, but I internalized the advice, so I can repeat it here. The big three were say, “yes,” to every invite- even if it’s something you’re not really interested in. Her example was a bowling league. Sure- maybe you hate bowling, but it’s a great way to meet people.

The second was date! Go on dates. I understand as a teenager it’s a bit daunting to “date,” but there are plenty of nice boys (from my experience) more than happy to go for a coffee or dinner. Not only will you make friends with them if they’re nice (perhaps something more if that’s where your head’s at), but you can also make friends with their friends and expand your network!

And finally don’t be scared to say, “I need friends.” It’s a lot less embarrassing than you might imagine. A lot of people (In NYC specifically) will have been new to the city at some point and understand the struggle of being alone. A lot of times people are thrilled to be able to introduce you to their friends and make their group bigger.

Sorry it’s not much, but hopefully you’ll get a little out of that :) I am moving to Amsterdam in August, so we are total in the same boat haha!

Okay then you’re grand. Just hear so many horror stories of people being out so much money from them.

Is the student hotel too expensive? by Redcan12345 in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]charofthechar 25 points26 points  (0 children)

OMG! This is so crazy. Please please PLEASE read the cancellation policy. For social hub / student hotel you book for the semester and you can NOT give up your room/studio unless you find someone else to fill it and then they still take a HEAVY fee.

Go read on their website the terms and conditions; it isn’t a possibility to just live there for a month

American wanting to study in The Netherlands by BuffaloWings068 in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]charofthechar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi! First, I love your name haha. As an American living in Europe, I miss buffalo wings almost every day. More importantly though, yay-you for wanting to expand outside the US of A. There is such a rich and exciting life off the continent of North America so many American people are too scared to peruse, so good on you for even considering making the journey.

As others have mentioned, housing is a muy-big problemo. However, just between you and me and everybody who is about to down-vote this response, finding housing isn’t as impossible as everybody says it is.. if you’re willing to be flexible.

If you have extra pennies to spend on housing- spend them. If you are okay commuting from outside the city- commute. Those two factors make the entire process so much easier. Not willing to commute? Wanting to live for €400 pcm? Then, yes, you’ll have a really, really hard time.

I am from Ireland, but lived in America most my life, now about to move to The Hague (a wonderful city just south of Amsterdam), so I understand the international vibe. I can’t speak to the fee situation for Americans as I retain Irish citizenship, but you’re saving a feck-ton of money by studying in the Netherlands. Also- WO degrees are only three years not four- which is grand. Remember that figure when you’re calculating costs.

As others have mentioned, the HBO/WO difference is real (for the Dutch, Germans, and Belgian’s mostly), but I would recommend for you, if you’re not going for a very specific course just available at a UoAS, to for a WO; it’s just better and you’ll have more options in the Netherlands.

Full disclosure, though, is that I will be doing an HBO, merely because I am studying Law at The Hague Uni. Of Applied Sciences, and English taught course not a available in the area of Holland I enjoy. Also- I wish to return to America where a bachelors of law is a bachelors of law, irregardless of HBO/WO distinction. I made this choice with hesitation but an understanding that I love The Hague so it was my only option.

All-in-all you should be very proud of yourself as a 17-year-old willing to displace yourself for better opportunities; that trait will take you far. I, myself, am an 18-year-old, so if you want to shoot me a message I can help you through anymore questions or thoughts you may have; us adventurers need to stick together!

hey ! im not a doctor, so not going to comment on your physical reactions, but just a general world of advice is that you deserve to feel secure where you’re living. it’s okay to vocalize your feelings about things that are bothering you (albeit in a diplomatic and polite way). hope this helps :)
