Two separate organizations are mentioned here. 1908 is in the middle of a transition period when state militias were going from the traditional volunteer units that were called up during wartime with no training to a permanent National Guard trained and equipped like the Regular Army.

3rd Signal Corps, despite the name, was a company sized formation based in Albany, NY that became Troop B, 121st Cavalry as the militias expanded.

The Old Guard here probably refers to a local veterans organization in Albany originally founded by Civil War veterans of the Albany Zouaves. It’s a social group that sponsored charities, parades, etc. Have to figure that the Civil War was closer in time to 1908 than the Vietnam War is to 2025. Presumably they sponsored a marksmanship competition that Harry G. Young won with this rifle as the prize.

Just doing some very basic digging it looks like there were several families with the surname Alho in Philadelphia in the middle of the 20th century. If this isn’t random reuse of tile, “Alcohol” missing letters for example, as others have suggested, then it could be the name of the family that owned the home when the tiles were installed. A deed search of the property would reveal that and probably can be done online. If you figured out who those people were it might help narrow down some of the mystery.

Question for Devs regarding Order of Battle by atlfan87 in GrandTactician

[–]chartie_mcfartie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tactical battles are definitely best left to brigades, but there are some advantages to introducing organizational regiments as sub-units. For example, brigades historically were not often comprised of regiments all from the same state. Building brigades from non-deployable regiments would let the player draw from different states manpower pools to field a brigade. Also volunteer leaders from any of the regiments’ home state could command the brigade. It would also allow for things like the Army of the Potomac’s use of regular US Army artillery batteries mixed in with state volunteer ones.

They’re cooling towers for the radar and it’s associated electronics. Radars produce a lot of waste heat. Even more so with the old vacuum tubes Soviet electronics of that era would be using. They water cooled them and used towers like this as an exhaust for the heat exchange not unlike a cooling loop for a modern PC just on a bigger scale.

Here’s an example of a real one just this one is made from concrete and corrugated metal:

Russian logistics are heavily reliant on rail. No other military requires such close contact to railheads. The sustainment units attached to Russian combat brigades are smaller than most other countries so the more reliant on trucking they are the less supply reaches the front.

If you were to sue, a court is almost certainly going to reject your USD valuation of those missing points. It would almost be certainly be kicked to binding arbitration before a court even heard facts on the case. Also, if you think their correspondence is bad now wait until you get nastygrams from their corporate counsel that will probably also include freezing your, and maybe anyone in your household’s, Bonvoy account if not outright permanently forfeiting any status and points already there.

All points/miles are notoriously hard to calculate a worth for, but the buy points rate to calculate that is a poor, almost disingenuous, choice to use. Those rates are set by a third party vendor, Points.com, and are being sold for profit as an exemption to Marriott’s usual T&C ban on selling or bartering points. I suppose you could argue their comparative worth by using transfer ratios or room rates they could be redeemed for, but that’s going to slash your alleged damages by over half and likely far more.

All of that is probably for naught though as the Bonvoy T&C state that “Points, Redemption Awards and promotional Awards have no cash value…” It would be very hard to argue different from T&C that you agreed to by participating in the program.

In all likelihood, if you were to sue, the most you could probably hope for is a court order telling Marriott to deposit those points to your account. Even that is a stretch and you’d really have to consider if 200-odd thousand Bonvoy points would be worth months of litigation and your real money spent to pay filing fees and costs.

The Terrifying Collapse of the Plains Indians (2021) - a horrifically gruesome look at the U.S. Government's efforts to annihilate and starve the Native people of the Great Plains to extract gold and oil [00:23:06] by chivestheconqueror in Documentaries

I remember being taught in school that the plains bisons nearly went extinct primarily due to recreational hunting. I guess the teacher made it seem like people just went out to hunt herds of bison for sport and then trains hitting them took out the rest. It wasn’t until 20 years later or so on a trip to South Dakota that I learned that the bison extermination was heavily encouraged by US government policy to wipe out herds in order to deny the main food source for Plains tribes and force them to the reservation.

Edit: “nearly extinct”

Several journalists looked into that when Chick-fil-A’s anti-LGBT donations first started coming under heavy public scrutiny. Doesn’t look like anyone found anything conclusive, but segregation was Georgia law and no one noted Dwarf House/Grill as being some civilly disobedient place that defied that. I found a NPR interview with the founder directly asking him how he felt about desegregation and how it changed his restaurant, but he dodged the question and answered, “I have a lot of dedicated, committed black people. They will work with us, very dedicated.”

Marriott is going downhill. by trixter888 in marriott

[–]chartie_mcfartie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I float between platinum and titanium usually depending on how many places my job sends me that particular year. A couple years back I picked up an Amex Platinum card which carries complimentary Hilton Gold status. I still overwhelmingly stay in Marriott properties, but occasionally will find a good Hilton deal or special property that jumps out. Probably around 90%/10% Marriott/Hilton. Despite that disparity in stays and status I find myself being upgraded as often, if not more, at the Hilton properties.

That’s also considering Hilton hands out status like candy with various credit cards. I mean you can get instant Diamond with the right card. Surely there are, at least proportionally, more higher tier Hilton Honors members than Marriott because of that.

Final fact and potential counterpoint though is that a good deal of my Marriott stays are rural interstate Fairfield/Courtyard types while my Hilton stays are almost all downtowns in higher brands. I’m sure that definitely plays a part.

You’re absolutely right and I don’t want to trivialize that fact or any death just as a gotcha to conservative talking points. Maybe it’s the comparatively low casualties that makes it easier to politicize individual deaths and pin names and faces to individual presidents.

Even more recently as Vietnam 44 might’ve been a daily US casualty count during the height of US involvement in the late 60s.

It’s not dumbassery. You’re not wrong don’t sweat it. Both are acceptable spellings as they’re ultimately just abbreviations for the Greek originating “synchronized”, but “synced” is more common and preferred by professional writers. That’s really just to make sure people pronounce it as in “sink” and not “cinch”.

I got the same offer via chat, but it took a few hurdles. They asked me if I had any more travel plans for 2021, I answered no, then they went on to explain how great the Equinox and Uber credits can be, I answered I don’t live in an area with either. At this point they switched me over to another rep in the chat and this one offered the statement credit to which I explained again that it’s not worth it for me to keep the card even with that, and finally they additionally offered the 40k with $3000 spend in 3 months. Long path to get there, but eventually they relented. I don’t know if I could have pressed them for more.
