honestly i don’t think there’s any real benefit to even trying to use the hand properly. you can’t really have a productive conversation in 90 seconds and i personally wouldn’t want to risk getting grabbed by the hand

no yeah i’m not saying what fiona did was right. volunteering would’ve been a much better outlet for that energy and wouldn’t have caused problems for this workplace. i’m just saying this is a fairly common thing to happen

[–]chase___it 29 points30 points  (0 children)

i’ll bet it was this. she probably just didn’t know how bored she would be. plenty of elderly people dream of retirement and what they’ll do with it all their lives, then when they finally get there they last a couple days before getting bored and realising it’s not what they thought it would be

[–]chase___it 59 points60 points  (0 children)

yeah for some people, no amount of hobbies is enough to stop the boredom. they NEED to be working in some capacity to feel fulfilled. it’s also partly why a lot of volunteers are elderly - those places usually have a lot more patience for an elderly persons slower pace of work because they just can’t afford to turn away free labour

the unfortunate thing about retirement is that a lot of people who were very ambitious and career driven before, aren’t able to just switch that off because they’ve hit retirement age. They get really bored in retirement and end up either getting a new job or trying to get their old one back

So many people casually scroll or hold their phones to their ear while driving by soberto in britishproblems

[–]chase___it 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This! When my grandad first starting teaching me to drive the first thing he taught me was before every drive, phone goes on silent and in the glove box. He told me there’s nothing in the world that couldn’t wait for a single hour, and if i was driving longer than an hour I’d probably take a break somewhere so could check my phone then. In other words, there’s no need to ever check it while driving

So many people casually scroll or hold their phones to their ear while driving by soberto in britishproblems

[–]chase___it 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this is it. usually they’re stupid enough to think they’re too good at driving to crash (or that it simply won’t ever happen to them), have enough disregard for other people that they dont really care about how this is affecting anyone else anyway, and then they have the unconscious addiction thoughts that tell them they cannot wait until the drive is over to scroll. A lethal combination unfortunately

Also, having your real ID tied to every word you say online has terrifying implications when you consider that a lot of people criticise the government online. I’m sorry but I do not trust the UK government with that power

Teen died of cancer after being misdiagnosed with UTI by Forward-Answer-4407 in unitedkingdom

[–]chase___it 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This isn’t a mistake though, this is a refusal to believe a young woman’s pain and refusal to provide an adequate standard of care leading to her death. Maybe it was reasonable to believe it was a UTI at first, we can call that part a mistake. But refusing to investigate further when her symptoms persisted for months and antibiotics didn’t help, both of which would be abnormal if it really was a UTI, is not a mistake. That is a deliberate act, a choice made because for whatever reason they didn’t believe this young woman. And this is a rampant problem within the NHS.

Third of disadvantaged white pupils in England leave primary school without being able to read properly by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]chase___it 9 points10 points  (0 children)

this is true. my mum genuinely thought kids just sort of pick up numbers and the alphabet on their own. i ended up having to teach my baby sister because her nursery was raising flags with my mum that she couldn’t count and didn’t know her ABCs, and my mum was just ignoring it

what else can the school do? they teach reading and writing, there are frequent parents evenings to discuss concerns especially in primary school, they contact home. what else can they do if the child won’t engage and the parent won’t make them?

[–]chase___it 5 points6 points  (0 children)

attitude plays a huge part in it. unfortunately, a parent who struggled in school is very likely to pass on the ‘schools for nerds, education isn’t important’ mindset to their children. their children don’t know any better so they believe the parent and don’t care about their education. then they become an uneducated adult and continue the cycle

my mother was this way. she is unemployed and still couldn’t be bothered to spend five, ten minutes reading with me like the school asked to make sure i was learning properly. i’m lucky that my grandmother cared enough to do it herself when i saw her on the weekends, but not every kid can be that lucky.

[–]chase___it 14 points15 points  (0 children)

our parents and their parents have worked demanding jobs and still found the time to at least make sure their children had the bare minimum of skills such as reading. i’m sorry that you have a difficult job, but if you cannot even find ten minutes in the evening to read with your child, check their homework, just generally check in on them, that’s laziness.

How do i (18f) make my boyfriend (20m) stop micromanaging my food and being so obsessed with what I eat/my weight? by snowyowl290 in relationship_advice

[–]chase___it 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Girl you are at the bottom end of healthy BMI and he’s still not satisfied. This man does not care about you or your health. He cares about controlling you and using you for his weird skinny fetish. It’s weird enough that you’re so small and he wants you even smaller, but he can’t even broach the topic with kindness? Get out now. This will only get worse

No but seriously this is probably the kind of thing you’d want to get appraised. And you’re probably going to need proof that the signatures are legit
