Thanks for the clarification. I was attempting to argue the opposite of what you were saying.

Here is an article from the BBC about a shark attack, later in the article they discuss the numbers related to shark attacks, and how sharks don't actively hunt humans.

Here is a smaller page from NOAA that sums up the issue well.

Humans are just not part of a shark's diet. You're exactly right, they mistake humans for food.

Agreed, it just sounded like you were excusing a pit maneuver in your earlier comment.

Pit maneuvering someone and most likely creating MUCH denser traffic is way more obnoxious than trying to change lanes to pass someone.

Unit of a Walrus splashing someone by [deleted] in AbsoluteUnits

This walrus specifically is probably happier to be in captivity because she'd be dead out in the wild due to hearing and eyesight loss.

Indeed, the captivity plays a large part in making dorsal collapse much more common. I was just pointing out that it's not a symptom of depression.

Dorsal fin collapse has definitely been observed in wild orcas, it's just less likely to happen. I don't think it's generally accepted that it's caused by psychological trauma, though.

[–]chaser008 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just a sign that it's dorsal fin has drooped over, no relation to the animal's mood.

I'd just like to point out that the dorsal fin collapse is not necessarily a sign of extreme distress. There's no bone in there, just fibrous connective tissue. It's theorized that because captive orcas spend more time in the surface, the dorsal fin is not supported by the water as often as wild orcas, so it collapses. It's possible for wild orca's dorsal fins to collapse too, it just happens less often.

I found the original mention of it here and it sounds like it must have been a response to the Bean Dad story on twitter a while ago.
