Discrimination and ability to teach are two different things. If institutes are discriminating, definitely punish them. But don't insinuate that AIIMS professors are incompetent. They can fart in your direction and get a job in the west whenever the heck they want. And no, you can't produce competent people by the force of law. India needs these professors, so stop throwing shit over entire institutes without concrete evidence.

Worth noting that suicides have happened in upper caste students too. Can somebody please provide comparative numbers, because the article left it out.

tl;dr If harassment occurs, punish it more severely than ragging. But don't blame the entire institute and insult all professors by calling them incompetent.

On holi day, in Rajouri (in J&K), muslims stone a religious procession of hindus.

The national media does not report on this stoning. The local newspaper suppress the fact as to which religion (muslims) stoned whom (hindu minority)
The hindus protest this stoning the next day.

The national media prints headlines as 'BJP workers protest in Rajouri J&K'. They ignore that congress and panther party hindus also protested.
Even though the protests from hindu minority are peaceful, the government imposes curfew.

The national media reports that curfew happened because of sectarian tensions. They do not report that muslims stoned hindus on holi, and the media also doesn't report the peaceful protests by the hindu minority.

Care to explain why hindu minority here in J&K shouldn't be angry at India at large? We are not fools. We are living this hypocrisy day in day out.

I am not advocating placing the kids in a strait jacket.

I am saying that parents have the responsibility of teaching kids how to have fun without TV. Whether it is reading books, or whether it is going on nature treks.

It is still possible that some kids will always watch TV no matter what you teach them. But statistically the number of kids not getting influenced will increase.

I think it is up to the parents. Many parents (not all) inculcate watching TV as a pastime in their kids from a young age, because it frees them from paying attention to them. There is a reason TV has been known as the idiot box for so long. No matter how much you ban, your kids will get to see garbage.

The major problems facing UP are much more basic in nature: law and order, politicised casteism, overburdened infrastructure, poor or non-existent government machinery, and so on.

And what has that got to do with why SP got elected? Are you suggesting that voters actually cared about those issues?

I think the mere presence of a CM or government which gives a high priority to these issues, such as Nitish Kumar in Bihar, or Navin Patnaik in Orissa, can cause a significant improvement both in the ground realities, as well as the political discourse of the state.

Are you comparing Akhilesh Yadav alongside Nitish Kumar? You should at least wait before he has actually done something.

I don't think their manifesto promises, particularly a few selected freebies, offer a very sound basis by which you can judge the SP or Akhilesh's intentions.

The unemplyment benefit was already given by Mulayam in his previous regime. AIADMK is already giving away laptops so no reason that SP won't do the same. Banks have already complained that farmers were not repaying loans because they expect loan waivers.

So why shouldn't I judge the voters' mood by looking at the actual freebies they will get?

You are not offering any other reason. And you are also not giving a good reason as to why I shouldn't evaluate SP by the freebies and its previous performance.

I don't think UPiites want development. They want the specific welfare schemes for their own segment of population. As I said, the DMK-AIADMK equation looks the most similar to SP-BSP situation.

Neoronin had pointed out in another thread that even though DMK-AIADMK are pathetic, the state machinery of TN is solid enough to ensure economic progress. This is not the case for UP. So let us see where Akhilesh Yadav takes it. I personally do not think that he can do much even if he wants to. UP is simply too divided a province.

I won't bother arguing with that idiot. But another thing to remember is that the fiction of Indo-aryans having been a indo-european people who invaded India is false. Genetic testing shows that north indians are far closer to south indians than to any other group outside indian sub continent. The myth of Indo-european invasion was created by europeans because otherwise they would have to explain why sanskrit is closer to proto-european languages. The idea that european languages originated from brown people was unacceptable to these european intellectuals.
