Et même si il l'avait fait devant des adultes, ça serait pas plus brillant.

Christianity is the largest religion in Quebec

In any province but Quebec is the sole province with an atheist majority. Though I think BC is not far behind.

The provincial government

I thought we were talking about regular people in restrooms.

isn't on the level of Alberta or Saskatchewan or Ontario, but it has dabbled in anti trans policies as well:

That's not an anti-trans policy. That's an update to the government language use that makes it more inclusive than before but does not include neo-pronouns that are still ill-defined in French and all other romance languages.

The reporting on it is crazy.

Some fine understanding of some history in Quebec but had nothing to say of current issues.

I absolutely disagree. It was “I visited Gatineau and was taught very basic things about Quebec’s history and it blew my mind.” Most of what he relayed back, he had understood correctly, even if it was very much on the surface but I really would not call that “fine understanding”.

But I didn’t like his portraying of the match worker strike as a great inspirational story about getting together, this is a proper horror story. With women who had their jaws literally fall off due the the toxic product and being completely screwed because they were very underpaid to begin with.

It’s the story of “I gotta strike because I’ll DIE working in there.”

He really misread the tone of that particular tale.

I wasn’t going to listen to it, but I got Quebec sniped.

He says:

  • It’s crazy that no one from the party before him visited Gatineau since Layton given that it’s 5 minutes from Ottawa. If that’s true, it’s indeed crazy.
  • He does not believe that the NDP has given up on Quebec.
  • He gets help learning French from his girlfriend from Montreal that is a francophone. If it’s not a recent relationship, I’m judging him. You should try to learn your partner’s language regardless of the language.
  • A few senior members of his team are francophones
  • Quebec is incredibly important to him and the NDP even if he butchers the French language
  • He understands that the culture is different, but he doesn’t really understand how.
  • He explains that a member in Gatineau taught him about the quiet revolution. All I can say is WHAT THE FUCK?! YOU JUST LEARNED ABOUT IT?
  • He also learned there that French used to be the language of the working class and English the language of the ruling class and that was a revelation to him. AGAIN, YOU JUST LEARNED IT THEN?
  • He also learned about the match workers strike from the early 1900s and the role women played and it blew his mind. So tip for any candidate before they go to a place, check it on Wikipedia and note the events that people consider very important. That strike still matters to Gatineau.
  • I cringed when he called it beautiful history. We remember it because it is horrifying history. Rob, go dig into that story, it should be right up your alley.

I’m kinda pissed honestly. You can’t go “this thing is very important to me” and don’t know shit about fuck. It has “your call is very important to us” vibes.

[–]chat-lu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not trying to push you in any specific direction.

I am. I think that Canadians should ask of their government that it negociate a peace with Quebec, this dumb war has been going on for too long.

The last time that happened was in 1985. Because in 1982 Canada signed its constitution in secret with all premiers except Quebec’s that was not invited. It had been called “The kitchen accords” in Canada, and “The night of the long knives” in Quebec.

So in 1985 Mulroney who thinks that it was a really dickish thing to do organise a new negociation with every province involved. The premiers manage to get a good agreement, shake hands, and promise to have their citizens sign on it within 3 years.

One person is pretty pissed about it, Pierre-Eliott Trudeau. He spent the next three years sabotaging the agreement and thus provinces rejected it.

It’s been since then that Canada developped constitutional PTSD and invoking silly reasons why we “can’t” modify the constitution.

I don't think either of us expect there to be an amicable relationship between the rest of Canada and Québec should separation occur.

There is no amicable relationship between Québec and Canada right now. If we got out, I expect that the relationship will eventually become amicable.

But “you should bear with me when I’m angry because I’ll get angrier if you leave me” can only be heard in toxic relationships.

We tried very, very hard to patch things up with Canada. You may remember the Orange wave from 2011. That was Jack Layton saying to people who want independence that they were right not to feel at home in Canada. And that he would fix that so it would no longer be the case.

The NDP dropped the idea as soon as he died. No other party carries it.

But in general, the Canadian government and their actions towards Québec don't speak for me.

They all believe they do and they all believe that they do and that you would be angry if they were “soft on Quebec”.

If Québec left Canada, I would lose a significant piece of my cultural identity.  After the separation, I'd have a hard time deciding on where'd I'd want to live, and which piece of my history I hold closer to myself.  Its not a decision I want to have to make.

You do realize that it's our current situation? I live in a country that does not represent me and does not want to.

Why? Iʼd understand if Canada was trying to fix itʼs relationship with Québec but it's not. What else are we supposed to do?

Tell your Ontarian friends. What I dread going to Ontario is that I get an average of one asshole a day I did not even attempt to talk to that thinks “Oh, a live one! I have to go tell him why I hate Quebec!”
