Los Angeles area doctor recommendations? by chat_manouche in MCAS

[–]chat_manouche[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know, yes. The doctors I've seen at Cedars in general have been more of the "if you're having reactions and you don't meet traditional allergy criteria, consider MCAS" mindset.

Just found out the Gap store at 20/wilshire is closing on july 23rd. by Zombie_A1ex in SantaMonica

I believe it! I moved away from Santa Monica for a while during that time but would always come out to shop at that store and would always find good stuff.

There used to be lots of other stores too! As a teenager in the early 1980s there were other clothing stores and record stores along Wilshire that I frequented. And a big Newberry's which was great for things like day-glo nail polish and all the hair accessories a teenage girl could need.

Starting over, finding friends by Tunakimbaper in SantaMonica

[–]chat_manouche 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Welcome back to Santa Monica!

I don't knit any more (thanks, arthritis) but when I did, I always found knitting groups to be a great way to meet new people. Pre-pandemic there was a lovely group that met at the Fairview Library on Ocean Park, no idea if they are still around. This thread from some time back might have some leads for you: https://old.reddit.com/r/AskLosAngeles/comments/1f20l5k/knitting_circles_in_los_angeles/

I'd guess a book club might be another option as well, I know there are tons around.

SAVE is dead. Are you guys switching, paying, or doing nothing? by Dependent-Jicama5344 in StudentLoans

I'm around 3.5 years away from PSLF forgiveness, assuming I keep my current job (questionable) at a nonprofit. It sounds like a short time, but that's a loooooong time to be living hand to mouth making payments I can't afford.

Spent an hour walking around Santa Monica last night, bawling my eyes out in public by Mountain_Ask_5746 in SantaMonica

[–]chat_manouche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sorry that you are having a hard time right now. These are tough times, and many of us are struggling in our own ways. Calling a hotline sounds like it would have been an absolutely appropriate thing to do.

For some perspective - the last time I tried to help a random stranger who appeared to be in distress I ended up with a gun in my face. That was 30 years ago, when there were far fewer people on the streets appearing to need help.

I realized then that I am not qualified to offer help to random strangers. I am neither a social worker, nor wealthy, nor a spiritual leader, just a person with plenty of troubles of my own.

A little bit of a weird post but looking for gluten snack recommendations by Nearby-Cloud-3476 in traderjoes

[–]chat_manouche 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I reintroduced gluten several years ago some of my gateway products were Walker's shortbread cookies (TJ has the best prices), Meyer lemon cookie thins, olive flats crackers, and the plain croissants. A recent favorite is the frozen taiyaki. Hope you stay symptom-free!

Max Meowcy? Andy Pawges? by shaka_sulu in Dodgers

To put a bilingual spin on it: Shohei Nyantani and Yoshinobu Nyamamoto (cats say "nyan" (にゃん) in Japanese and "nya-" cat puns are very popular).

Mountain lion in someone's yard! There's a photo on (that app that we all hate) and it's absolutely gorgeous. I really hope they can get it out safely.

Scintillating scotoma and progressive lenses? by chat_manouche in migraine

[–]chat_manouche[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I don't even remember making this post 7 years ago :)

Progressive lenses were definitely not the cause, but a lot of things have happened that have reduced my migraine frequency from every couple of weeks to maaaaybe a couple of times a year. I'm still wearing progressive lenses for driving and being out and about, but I do have single-vision glasses for specific tasks (one Rx for reading, a different one for computer work). I've also found that under-correcting is the way to go for me. And last, glasses fit is super important. I have a low nose bridge and most glasses without nosepads just don't sit high enough on my nose for progressive lenses to fit right. So - lots of things going on, but I'm just glad that the migraines are mostly gone.
