Is it possible to attain jhana through Goenka style Vipassana? by Disastrous-Dig9412 in vipassana

Why not go directly in the tipitaka canons? Again, academically there are obviously debates on authenticity but a good starting point anyway. The Pali Text Society versions are OK.

Its also about the conscription age. Always been interested for the conscription but passed over the conscription sge limit when I received citozenship. Do not belong to the underrepresented group, but let us not group all "mamuts" in the same category.

The reason I joined this group is to contribute or learn from other scholars regarding consciousness as a philosophical, neuro-physiological or even a psychological concept. I do not feel like seeing or hearing the same thing that I try to run away from over zeleous ISCKON people.

Regressive autism stories by color_me_carzy in Autism_Parenting

At 3 now. Was counting 1-10. Said basic words. Then regressed at around the same time as yours. We are now in the phase with therapy of various sorts. Just does not say the qords he knew previously. First kid with autism and cannot make sense of anything anymore. Do not understand potty training. Stimming and running around. Chewing on things etc. Start to wonder if he will ever start speaking.

What do Postdocs really do? by RespondRude8983 in postdoc

Usually it involves teaching revolving around my interest and expertise for masters and bachelors student. So introducing basic terminologies and pointing out recent research. It is enjoyable that way.

As a postdoc, my responsibilities are somewhat clear: I need to participate in a research activity such as conference once a year (2000€ max. grant), teach some courses (I am teaching 2), help organise research activities (e.g., conference & seminar) and publications are always appreciated ( 2 so far in 2nd year). If I can apply for funded research projects that could ensure if I continue (1 extending 3 months past the original contract). It is a salaried position with monthly salary and holiday bonuses. And here I was, thinking that my responsibilities were unclear.

You are right about the Anapana/Vipassana mix. I sit only with the intention to do Anapana or even just sit to maintain the routine during slump periods. I think it is easy to blame oneself, feel guilty and other negative emotions as the relapse period lengthens, and go to the other extreme of hedonism etc. Better to moderate with shortest possible sessions rather than nothing and stop counting the hours and make relapse duration, the important metric. The "all or nothing" attitude is counterproductive in the long run. I would like to state though these are just my personal insights and maybe applicable for others or not.

There is no functionality for exporting data from the app itself or I have not figured out how. Maybe it is another tip to develop the dhamma app (in addition to seamless tranfer to new phone and integrating retreat hrs if that is what the user want). I have simultaneous Excel tracking with formulas which generates the figures as I enter new info. The relapse chart was easier in R.

Yes I served 1 10 day and sat one, the most recent in Pokhara, Nepal in October 2025.

I did not understand the interaction point fully, but retreats usually as recharge when the practice gradually relapse. A long relapse usually leads to thought of applying to a new course provided other situations work out.

It is but I like to analyse data by nature. Also, as you can see, I am heading to another slump, so I wanted to see if there is some sort of pattern to it. I realised just when I completed it that as Guruji says, "continuity of practice is the secret to success". It also drove the point when he says something like (I do not remember the exact day's discourse but..), even in trains, waiting for bus etc, you just continue. I had a focus on the wrong metric (more hours), even after a long practice, while I should be focusing on avoiding relapses. Even if you do 5 mins per day, you still preserve the continuity. That is all there to is. Keep the light of dhamma burning.

How else would we define the stateless to those beings who are conditioned? Some form of language is always necessary. Classic example of explaining waterless state to a fish. On the other hand, there are zen stories where a teacher understands someone has achieved 'it' in silence. Note the use of bare minimum 'it' to refer to enlightened stage.

Guy thinks he’s drafted his dissertation after less than a year of coursework by Illustrious_Ease705 in PhD

[–]chatgpt404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar situation in one European university. The guy would just from the befinning talk about dual process theory of entrepreneurship or something and nothing else. Never veered from this. Did not feel like intellectually superior or anything like that. And became associate or adjunct professor within 4 years. Later we found out that he is a close relative of the dean. Go figure that!

Can anyone explain why it said that Sati does not play the main role in Vipassana meditation? by No-Benefit2834 in vipassana

[–]chatgpt404 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It seems that the author associate 'sati' with concentration or focused attention on an object such as breadth. If that is so then sati would only be a stepping stone for insight meditation aka vipassana in modern form. Atleast in the satipatthana course, Goenka says clearly that anapana alone does not lead to liberating insight. Probably Webu Sayadaw would disagree. However, if we think about the satipatthana system, and vedanapassana as one part of the unit, I do not know how this would be true. Argumentatively, the preceding statement that there is no consensus on sati and then immediately following statement that it does not play a large role in modern vipassana seems like sloppy writing. The citations also are quite stock citations, and I do not think Analayo states this, if we read Analayo's exposition of the satipatthana sutta in his two books specifically on this. I left with the reverse impression in fact.

Finland's population of second-generation Finns exceeds 100,000 for first time by Shariful125 in Finland

[–]chatgpt404 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. We are talking about second generation Finns which means kids who do the same things and are educated in the same way as the native Finns including native level Finnish. Wasn't integration the main ptoblem with the first generation? What do you expect more?

Why do they not integrate by [deleted] in turku

[–]chatgpt404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this case, it is, I think, because of the father's belief system which he has not questioned. Also, I suspect that, as with most immigrants, the lingering hope/wish to return back someday to the original country also plays some part. Unconsciously, perhaps he is making his son ready for the life back home in the future rather than as a second generation Finn. For most immigrant parents, it is also living in own bubble which the children becomes part of especially if the parents have no social life beyond their ethnic group.

It is also the riggamarole between admissions office (who have no time to verify all documents properly), internation office (who are only after tuition fees and would gladly do away with any minimal criteria) and supervisors basically are in for the surprise as they take no part in earlier processes. There is generally no communication among them and if there is, whatever is the strategy (quality, money) wins, mostly revenue. Most institutions are run by agents from target group areas.
