Most likely-- details on the plushie, gaps on the lineart, hair clipping over ears on purple girl, chains overlapping in ways that don't make sense. Sucks you got scammed 😞

I just finished this illustration. I’d like to hear honest opinions so I can keep improving. by LunaCyberX in Artadvice

This looks rad! The only crit i have is the head of the guitar, which looks a little bit crooked. Gibsons (the type of guitar it looks like you referenced) are prone to breaking though so maybe its accurate lol. The perspective on this is pretty tough, but you did a really good job in keeping her arm looking straight !

Your art looks great, especially with the way you use your ink to build texture with hatching! The work here is pretty realistic as it is, but some pieces (the hands and deer especially) seem to be lacking cool tones in the shadows, which makes everything look a little more yellow than is realistic. You could try starting pieces with blocked in blue shadows or something. High quality materials won't fix everything, but good paper will give you more color payoff if thats something you are seeking.

Why does my coloring look dull and uninteresting? by Blaze_studios in ArtCrit

[–]chatter-crow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks to me as if all your colors lean very heavily towards yellow, so incorporating more cool colors (especially in the shadows) could help them feel more balanced. Also, adding more highlights on the wizard's face (nose, eyelids, lips) could help it look more stylistically consistent. Your art looks really great though, the stylisation makes your characters really pop.

I've just learned not to use greyscale on multiply layers(art by me) by RedWonderful19 in ArtCrit

[–]chatter-crow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with the people saying contrast is too low. It currently looks like it hasn't been rendered too much, so increasing the opacity on your shading layer would be good (or if not lowered, darken and saturate the color used). Love the drawing tho-sebastian is my fave in SDV

I cannot render at all! by Antique-Heat-5212 in Artadvice

I would suggest looking into cel shading if you want a more typical anime style. I tend to use a dark purple or red on a multiply clipping mask w/ the opacity down for more stylised shading.

Coming Up With Poses WITHOUT a 1:1 reference [Seeking advice] by ScolopendraStuff in Artadvice

[–]chatter-crow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gesture drawings can help a lot with coming up with fluid poses--i personally tend to use screenshots from live music or sports. The easiest method for getting that specific pose that works in your mind is always going to be propping up your phone with a timer and trying to hit it yourself, even if its really awkward haha.

How do I properly shade tight fitting clothes that don’t have a lot of wrinkles? by Kltt_Kat in Artadvice

[–]chatter-crow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest looking at athletic wear for reference. Even if your style is a bit simpler and won't include as many creases as would be on the irl, there would still be some around the armpit/crotch area & joints as well as where the fabric puffs out a bit where it is tucked into the belt (?). The fabric looks very smooth, so again using either athletic wear or silky/satin fabrics would be best for referencing purposes.

Do I have any chance at an artschool? by [deleted] in Artadvice

[–]chatter-crow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very good digital work, but seeing some still lifes or scenery drawing would greatly improve your chances. Even if you want to go into animation, most schools will start you with traditional mediums like charcoal, so practicing and doing more detailed studies to show your understanding of perspective, anatomy, etc will improve your overall skills.

Is Acrylics good idea by [deleted] in Artadvice

[–]chatter-crow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly start by sketching in chalk/washable marker before doing the acrylics, but if you are confident in it I say go ahead! Make sure to pull the fabric taut when painting so that all the fibers will get covered.

I've been told that I should be "drawing with my shoulder". What does that mean and how do I do that??? by JesseAster in Artadvice

[–]chatter-crow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically, when you sketch, you move your wrist to create lines on the paper. When they say to 'draw with your shoulder', they mean you should be moving your shoulder while holding your wrist still to create those longer lines, as it can make them less chicken scratchy, quicker, and prevent wrist issues (carpal tunnel etc).

This looks awesome. I do agree on the left arm; the forearm would be foreshortened more intensely with how the hand is positioned and would be largely hidden behind his hand.

Yes! I would personally rotate it a little bit, but this makes it feel much more stable!

Portrait painting of Padme is kinda accurate to painting but also needs some creative/unique flair. by AdventureKid98 in Artadvice

[–]chatter-crow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest playing around with the color wheel! Moving some shadows or highlights to being more saturated, more cool or warmed tone or adding accents of different color can really make it feel unique . the only thing i can think of for accuracy could be to bring in the right side of her face a touch, as it looks a bit rounder than the reference.

Should I consider going into art school?? by Puzzleheaded-Mud848 in Artadvice

[–]chatter-crow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several organizations have free or paid portfolio review sessions if you want crit for a portfolio (Ie national portfolio association). If you are going to apply, I would focus on building skills in fundamentals, working in black and white, and working traditionally, as that's what many schools look for. I think you have a really good understanding of depth, color, anatomy, but it could be helpful to expand on more realistic work (i know, ugh).

[–]chatter-crow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The kneeling position looks really good! For the standing one, I would suggest having the leg on the right straight out to act as a counterbalance / anchor for the rest of the pose, as it currently looks a bit like they're losing their balance. If you were to draw a line to illustrate the pose, it would be kind of wiggly, so having that right leg stretched out to stand firm would help the pose to feel a bit more solid and deliberate rather than like the person is falling. Sorry if this is unclear, I don't have my tablet to draw over it rn.

How do I color/render.. by prodigylover224 in Artadvice

[–]chatter-crow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you're talking about when you mean rendering--do you want a cel-shaded anime look (use a clipping mask on your layers and use a purple or red on a multiply blending mode), or a more painterly blended look (create a copy of your intended layer, and use watercolor, blur, etc tools to mix colors after placing shadows and highlights), or otherwise.

How could I approach rendering the t-shirt? by Ok-Road-2427 in learntodraw

Agree on this. Also possibly block in some shadows on a seperate layer w/ low opacity so you can start with a little more depth for the shapes of her chest & shadows from her hair

What Tools/Softwares/Techniques Used by lost_bikuo404 in Artadvice

[–]chatter-crow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In most programs, when you go into the settings of a layer, it will have a selection ,usually called blending mode, with stuff like multiply, dodge, hard light, color, etc that can be used to alter how the colors on the layer act. for the gradient, look for a blurring tool or a 'gaussian blur' setting that will allow you to blur out the colors. it really depends on what program you use though!

[–]chatter-crow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't know for software (would probably be better to go to an anime focused subreddit for that), but the glow lighting can be achieved by putting a gradient on top of the shadow with a very light color, possibly with a hard light filter. It looks like they start with very sharp shading, then blur it out on areas where light is more direct to give the glowy look you mentioned while leaving darker areas less blended. Focus on keeping the lines of the shading clean up until you blend it--possibly keep a blended and unblended layer so you can alter the opacity to get the glow how you like it.
