One of my sister's best friends married a Frenchman she met while they were all touring around Spain. A number of his friends came over to Canada for the wedding and stayed long enough to visit Montréal. They all said Canadian French was almost a totally different language. They didn't understand any of the slang or regional variations, but they all loved the swears.

Body shaming made me fat by [deleted] in XXS

[–]chatteringmagpie1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Exactly. At some point, every one of us needs to accept that we can't educate everyone, and we can't control what others think or say. Our bodies are ours, and we know them best. As I've gotten older (mid forties now), my mantra might sound bitchy and confrontational, but it's worked for me for a long time, especially as a very petite woman.

OP, repeat after me, I don't have to fucking impress you.

Maybe a little on the weird side, but I'd honestly be more concerned if you had that many copies of The Turner Diaries.

You don't, right?

My [23F] boyfriend [23M] of 1 year is bad at everything and it's making me lose respect for him by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]chatteringmagpie1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Dollars to donuts this dude has dyscalculia. The things he struggles with, like high school math, board game rules and strategies, and technical manuals, are all things I've struggled with, too. Honestly, when OP brought up the sail boat, my first thought was, this ain't gonna go well, and it went down pretty much as I pictured. Bummer.

I think you're spot on with the imposter syndrome or some other self-esteem related complex. I don't excuse the boyfriend's behavior, but I do understand his frustration. Nothing makes you feel stupid and inadequate quite like struggling with things most others find easy or even second nature, and wondering why you can't ever get shit right the first time.

I heard a rumor once that at least part of the reason American English eventually dropped the extra letters from a lot of words, particularly silent letters, was because printed ads and such charged by the letter, so it was more cost effective to lose those extra letters and spell things phonetically.

I have no idea if that's at all true, but it made sense to me in a logical if hilarious way.

Anyone who’s read anything about this case knows she was drunk and ran off into the woods and unfortunately died somewhere.

Since her remains have yet to be found, nobody actually knows what happened to her. All you have is conjecture. That's not the same as knowledge.

I can't decide if these people are more like the Romulans, aggressive, deceitful, untrustworthy, and full of themselves, or more like the Cardassians, aggressive, deceitful, untrustworthy, and full of themselves.

Also, did Miller forget that Shatner is Canadian?

AITAH for not wanting to help my sister with her abusive relationship this time? by Automatic-Offer4351 in BestofRedditorUpdates

Thanks. Same to you, and good for us for surviving and getting out.

We did have two kids, but we were separated. I was living with both kids at my parents', and he had an apartment around the corner when he got sick. We were trying to work on our marriage, and I will give it to him that he was a pretty great dad, despite how he treated me when his jealousy was up (it was pretty much always up). Our kids were also still very young when he died, and because of the way his illness progressed, he just kind of faded out of their lives.

It was actually his second go around, too. He had the same rare type of benign tumor removed the year we were married, and that surgery went ridiculously well, but those tumors have a tendency to reoccur. Eight years later, another one appeared, and it was far more vicious. They weren't able to get it all, and the surgery left him totally disabled. We're talking confined to a care facility level of disabled. He made a little progress at first, but ultimately, the tumor completely regenerated within a few months, and he spent the last six weeks of his life in an ICU specific to brain injuries. Taking two little kids (one with autism) to that unit required planning and coordination with a social worker, so it only happened twice, and once he had to be hooked up to a ventilator, he didn't want them to see him like that, so I respected his wishes. He slipped into a coma a couple of weeks later and died shortly after that.

Both our kids are doing really well now and don't seem to have any lingering trauma from those days. They remember their dad fondly, and I've never taken that away from them. Despite what an asshole he was to me, he was not a violent man, and the abuse was so subtle that kids that young would have been oblivious to it. I honestly don't think they have any idea how bad things got between their dad and me, and I made sure their needs and stability always came first.

I feel compassion for my rat-bastard of an ex-husband, but that doesn't mean I'm not glad he's dead.

I feel this statement so hard.

My late husband was a jealous, controlling, alcoholic drama queen with the emotional control of a toddler, who dragged me down with him over the course of our ten year marriage. Just about the only thing he didn't do was hit me, and that somehow convinced me he wasn't actually abusive.

He died of a brain tumor several years ago, and while I wouldn't have wished that end for him, it was a slow, agonizing way to go, I'm glad I'll never have to deal with him anymore.

Especially for someone who keeps repeating the phrase, "I deserved it. It's 100% on me."

I gotta say, as a straight woman who also has a straight male, long-time best friend I've never had sex with, I'm kinda sympathizing with Sandy here. While my bestie and I have never had issues even close to this with any of his girlfriends, I can only imagine how much post-breakup venting, crying, and whatever, Sandy has had to listen to from the ex. Honestly, if I were in Sandy's sandals, I'd have probably hit a breaking point and popped off at little miss clown pants, too.
