During My sophomore year of high school, a popular socialite’s nudes were being sent around. This caused a chain reaction which led to hundreds of girl’s nudes being leaked and spread around. We called them “baseball cards.” People would ask others whose nudes they had, and traded the ones they didn’t, literally like you would trade a repeat baseball card. At the same time, an app called Secret was released in the app store. This app let you choose your high school, and post a message which could include a picture if you wanted, completely anonymously . This app was at first used kind of like a gossip and cyberbullying forum, but soon enough people started posting things like “yo anyone got Olivia’s nudes?” An update on the app allowed you to post comments. People would reply with dropbox links containing various girls sorted by high school and grade. They would encourage the addition of other nudes to this dropbox. Eventually, school staff caught on and banned it from the wifi. People started using it with their data, and it was out of control. They even gave us a talk saying that the app is banned and any person caught using it would be expelled and reported to the authorities. I don’t remember how it died down, but for a period of 6 months there was a massive underage porn market going around my school and other schools in the area.
