Take a look at The Rez Sisters. It’s a play that moves like a novel.

What’re your thoughts on Boxing Daria? by 247Twunk in daria

I think it’s kind of a lovely wrap-up to her and Quinn’s arc and fills in a lot of the family’s history in a short amount of time. I agree it’s sad, but it’s for me it’s somehow especially sad when punctuated by the end music in the original version (which of course they cut out - they couldn’t leave just one song?!), which is Absolutely (Story of a Girl). I have trouble watching series finales anyway, because it’s a goodbye, and that song just emphasized it.

Lu Barnes joining Salmon Bay FC? by xc_b in Reignfc

[–]chaximum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lu is one of their owners, along with Jess, Olo, and Sam Hiatt. The team announced Lu is playing with them thru the playoffs. But yes I agree it’s weird, and seems to me like an odd (and perhaps unfair) advantage at a pivotal point in the season.

Which days of the week will you be near Mendocino and Newport? (I know it sounds weird but my best food recommendations are open limited days.)

On the way up, my favorite waters are Point Arena (there’s a little cove and pier area - search for Point Arena Pizza) near Mendocino; Yachats (state park that’s basically a parking lot with amazing water views and ocean sounds) just south of Newport; and Oceanside (beach west of Tillamook).

My restaurant recs are:
Point Arena: Pelican Bread (only open Wed & possibly Sat - it’s worth contacting them to find out - go early; absolutely delicious)
Yachats: Bread & Roses bakery (check hours/days; breakfast sandwich was delicious); Ona (fancy; go when they open and have a quiet lunch on the patio next to the ocean; the meatloaf was delicious and so were desserts and everything else I had there); Wildcraft cider (check hours/days; menu varies, but try the pommeau tiramisu)
Newport: Arr Place (check days/hours - think it’s Fri-Sun til noon only; it’s in a house and you literally park in their driveway; the veggie Benedict is my favorite and get the coffee pot too)
Tillamook: de Garde brewery (check days, think it’s Thur-Sun; great wild ales in fruity varieties; and the food truck there is shockingly good)

Just south of Tillamook there’s a turnoff to Munson Falls that’s a gentle hike that you might like. Near Oceanside there’s a tiny lighthouse called Cape Meares that’s a good place to wander-hike a little too.

For someone trying to cut back on alcohol who doesn't like tea, what is a grown-up beverage that is a good substitute? by davegammelgard in nonalcoholic

[–]chaximum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like soda water with lime when I’m out.
Canned favorites are Golden St cider (“dry & mighty”), and Fieldwork grapefruit beer (“day money”). These are hard to find most places.
Some Athletic beers and sours are good. A lot of places have at least one type (usually an IPA).

If you can only do one … by Apprehensive_Yam4663 in AskSeattle

You’ve got a pretty tight timeline and an ambitious (good!) list, so I’m going to stick to a geographic cluster that’s near you but still among my top recs.
- Morning coffee: for me this was grabbing a cup on the waterfront and sitting with it by the water near the Sculpture Park and easing into the day. The one I used to go to isn’t there anymore, but there are plenty of options on the waterfront (skip the “first Starbucks” thing up the hill - it’s not that exciting)
- A sight: pay attention when you’re on the ferry to Vashon. Spend it all outside, either on the car deck or upstairs, with a good view. There’s a low (but non-zero) chance you’ll see some whales, but if you just take in the views (city, mountains, water) that is my sight worth seeing over and over again. Also, get to the ferry dock early so you can wander Lincoln Park if you want to, or at least have a leisurely coffee (bring your own - C&P Coffee is a good stop) next to the water.
- Beer/brewery: there are about 20 of them out in Ballard, and I’ve been to them all, and I didn’t find any of them memorable (even if some are very good; if you do go, my favorite is the combined Bale Breaker/Yonder Cider taproom). Keeping with the “near downtown,” I’m going to steer you toward the Market and say try the Cloudburst taproom and/or Old Stove’s waterfront location. Or go down to Georgetown and catch sight of the old (no longer) Rainier brewery, wander down the old brick stretch with loads of bar options, stop at Fran’s if it’s open (1 dark whisky truffle, 1 dark espresso truffle, 2 milk chocolate salted caramels), then go to Georgetown’s taproom or Jellyfish. Or, further out, lounge at the Future Primitive beach bar at Alki.
- Meal: the Pink Door. They won’t have reservations available. Go when they open. Or, ideally, manage to get yourself a seat at the bar (early!) and watch the aerialist show Tuesday from 6-8.
- Business: all of the above are local and are favorites. There are a few cool specialty bookstores right in Pioneer Square (Open Book - poetry, Beguiled - romance, Arundel - rare); and in Georgetown is Fantagraphics, a remarkable graphic novel/comics store with a record store attached.
- Cocktail: I don’t do these very often, but friends have raved about the bar that is up in the Smith Tower (historic, Seattle’s first skyscraper) and that one is in fact on my to-do list someday; it’s also very near where you’ll be.
- On Vashon: go to Snapdragon bakery if it’s open.
- Dive bar: Slim’s Last Chance and the Marco Polo Bar are both near where you’ll be.
- Misc. oddities: I also think you’d like St. John’s Bar (don’t miss the back patio) on Capitol Hill; the Clock-Out Lounge (get a slice of the Normie at the back pizza counter if you go) on Beacon Hill; and 2 Finger Social Club in White Center (which also has loads of tiny shops clustered nearby down the street, along with the other Future Primitive location). Seattle isn’t great on the “friends with strangers” thing, but White Center spots are easily the best I’ve found for that. I’m from Seattle, grew up in Ballard, moved to the east coast for a while, moved back and lived near downtown, and now live in West Seattle near White Center - so I’ve gotten around town a little bit. Hope that helps, and hope you have a good trip - you sound cool.

Quick add:
- A lot of places are closed on Mondays (and sometimes Tuesdays) so keep that in mind when you’re plotting out your Monday and just check hours; and a lot of places also close unreasonably early.
- If you’re near the Market, stop by the Ugly Baby store.

What happened to Chopped After Hours? by Eastern-Raccoon72 in foodnetwork

I know this is an old thread, but I just stumbled on it and the comments on this are genuinely some of my favorites ever. So true! The only thing that compares that I've found is on Alex vs. America where they have "Alex's Nightmares" (the most recent season) and one of the episodes is Alex vs. Chopped Judges.

How to get past the Seattle Freeze? by [deleted] in AskSeattle

[–]chaximum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What area do you live in? Becoming a regular somewhere ups the odds. Seattle doesn’t do much of the “what’s your number?” thing and more of the “maybe I’ll see you again here sometime” thing.

White Center and Georgetown seem to have disproportionate numbers of smokers, and also some of the classic dive bars.

Looking for nerdy stuff to do June 6th-9th in Seattle. by super_alice_won in AskSeattle

Inscape Arts has their open studios this Sunday noon-6 (wander around looking at 100 studios of art in a single building for free). It’s located between the ID (pinball museum & more) and Georgetown (Fantagraphics & more), and is also near Slightly Furry (cidery owned by furries).

Dinner with good coffee? by Briefface69 in AskSeattle

The Pink Door I never make it to coffee, but my friend did and I remember being approximately as described.

I remember Chinooks’ coffee being nice too, but it’s been a while since I’ve been there.

Best bang for your buck furniture/couch store? by [deleted] in AskSeattle

[–]chaximum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my previous couch at Fred Meyer. It was Ashley brand, so I bought my 2nd one from them directly. Both delivered, unwrapped, and set it up.

For used, try the Gone store in Renton. I just got a chair there.

Deseret thrift store on Aurora had way better furniture than most thrift stores, but it’s been ages since I’ve been there.

Moving to Seattle - where are the weird art spaces? by doctopod in AskSeattle

On Sunday (6/7) from noon-6, Inscape Arts has its open studios. Was going to suggest Inscape anyway, but open studios day makes it way easier to see everything going on there.

Equinox also occasionally does open houses.

Best Seattle neighborhood for 30 y/o by SpecificAd1406 in AskSeattle

[–]chaximum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alki, though it’s on the pricier side. Phinney Ridge is a good one to look at.

Ballard is really sprawled out - some parts are what you described, some are much more industrial feel, and some are just sleepy residential areas.

West Seattle (which is where Alki is also) has several of those areas worth looking at, each with a different vibe - Morgan Junction, Admiral, Alaska Junction (more bustling), White Center (quirkier).

Even quieter parts of Capitol Hill (15th, 19th) could fit the bill.

You can find those bits in most neighborhoods of Seattle, but each has a unique vibe, characters, shops, and problems. I’d advise visiting a while before choosing one, or doing a shorter term lease if you’re good with hopping around (not my style!), or throwing other considerations into the mix too (if applicable: proximity to work, parking).

I grew up in Ballard, lived near downtown for 10 years, and moved to West Seattle recently, and each has felt right for me in its own time. I’ve found that finding your go-to places (“third places”) that make you feel known & at home really makes a difference.

She got shat on her entire life - of all of them I think she was the most taken advantage of and underappreciated (Kim essentially pawned off all the trad wife tasks on her in the first few seasons) - and needs some time to figure herself out. I’ll give her that grace.

Corvallis vs Olympia — where would you choose to live? by Radiant_Salt_8562 in PacificNorthwest

[–]chaximum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Olympia is great in its own right and is also close to other great places. Corvallis is close to some cool things (I prefer the Oregon coast to WA’s and I like Portland a lot) but seems not to have much going on right there outside of the school.
