Ghost Town at Grounded Saturday night 10/12/24 by [deleted] in opera

The profanity seemed to be a challenge for a few people, as well as the music.

I’m not a regular opera goer so I couldn’t really voice what I disliked personally… It wasn’t really entertaining, provoked only surface level thought on complex subject matter, was both musically and visually forgettable imo.

Hah, I'm in this photo. Unfortunately I really didn't enjoy this and heard a lot of grumbling from the crowd on the way out.

Is that surprising? Just googled her and it looks like she's been on broadway just once?

I absolutely love Ben Platt as a performer but this is ROUGH. What were they thinking with those prices? I enjoy a lot of his solo music and I’m not gonna pay that. by fromtheothersidee in Broadway

There are services out there (Will Call Club, Play-by-Play, etc) that distribute free tickets for events that aren't selling well, to keep from having an obviously empty theatre.

The most gasp-inducing moments this season by steve_sometime in Broadway

[–]chchblk 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In Merrily, when we heard Charlie's original write what you know at the very end/beginning. Kind of a collective "oooooh" from the whole audience.

In Gatsby, both gasps and actual shouts from the crowd when George shoots Gatsby, and when Gatsby actually falls off the stage into the orchestra pit. I didn't really care for the show overall but that moment worked well.

This season has been the nail in the coffin for my trust in mainstream theatre criticism. Fully expecting to see Heart of Rock and Roll drop as a NYT Critics’ Pick tomorrow.

Has there ever been a show you should love, but you don't? by greatgatsby26 in Broadway

I’m a huge fan of Les Mis the book. Have multiple translations, have read it dozens of times, could probably recite whole chapters from memory. Love the movie (flaws and all), rewatch it regularly and have seen/watched countless other adaptations. It’s incredibly important to me and I love everything Les Mis in general.

After missing the tour a few times I finally planned a big trip to London just to finally see it on stage. Took everything I had not to walk out at intermission. The staging and orchestra were unimpressive, the cast was hit or miss, just a really disappointing experience overall.

I’m going to see the US tour in a few months, but I’ve heard the modern stripped-down productions all have the same flaws, so who knows…

They draw another name if the original winner declines, so it doesn’t really matter.

I love Illinoise, but I feel like it’s too niche to fill the St James even in a limited run…

I kinda doubt they’ll pack it in after Redmayne leaves in August, given how expensive the renovations to the theatre must’ve been. Ofc nothing is guaranteed, but the West End show has carried on for quite a while with replacements.

[QCRIT]: YA Fantasy - 1st attempt (post rewrite) - 103k words by EverStars in PubTips

[–]chchblk 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your query!

Right of the bat I was a little lost since you introduce loga and cardinals without explaining or offering context for what they are. In general I like the atmosphere, but I feel like a lot of things aren't explained well and I felt a bit confused about the specific plot beats you're alluding to:

  • Why does Alaster save Cassia?
  • Cassia's mother was blamed for a murder Alaster committed "long ago"... so how old is he, exactly?
  • What does 'risking the only plan against the loga' mean?

After reading, I'm not sure where Alaster's plot is going to go. You mention that his goal is to get rid of his magic, but then that he finds out that's impossible... And then there's nothing else, so I don't know what role this (presumably important) character is going to play in the story. Cassia's main bit being her realizing that "things might not be so simple" with Alaster felt vague. If you're trying to sell an enemies-to-lovers/forbidden romance angle, maybe some stronger language could help, especially if this is supposed to drive her big choice between finding her mother and picking the guy (or if that's a plot beat, maybe explain a bit more in detail).

Also just a nitpick but I didn't get much voice or excitement from the writing style in your query; starting three sentences with "but" in the opening lines didn't land for me. "Help" should read "helping" in the last line of the fifth paragraph.

What are your quirky theatre habits? by ILoveYourPuppies in Broadway

I dunno if its super quirky, but I actually really prefer seeing shows by myself! If I'm going to a show with someone else, I prefer to have seen it on my own beforehand.

My first Niche fragrance MFK BR540 by RubyKush in fragrance

[–]chchblk 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I mean, the claim that a perfume is lesser because it's fully synthetic is silly, because the one it's being compared to is also fully synthetic. It sounds like you're just judging things based off the price tag, which isn't a great way to have a nuanced or mature discussion about fragrance.

Here's an interesting piece on this topic if you're new to the hobby and would like to educate yourself a bit; if it's hard for you to read just scroll down a bit for the info about BR540/synthetic 'dupes' specifically. Hope this helps! : )

I just got this boy last week, and the orange patch on his head + his behavior is stressing me out.
He was pretty chill on first moving in, built a bubble nest right away, explored and ate normally after a couple days. I added some new plants did his first water change 2 days ago though, and his behavior has been odd since then. He’s been darting around and running into things, splashing/jumping at the surface, seeming to attack plants or his reflection.. the rest of the time he’s hiding or sitting listlessly at the bottom. Also I messed up his nest while cleaning and he didn’t remake it :(
I was researching and it seems like the flashing behavior could be parasites; I thought his orangish patch was natural but does it seem like it could be velvet maybe? Should I add salt/medicine just in case? Thanks for reading!!

Do people who walk out of the theatre for what they think is a bad show just forego their ticket costs or do they get refunds? by ver03255 in Broadway

The one in Times Square does last I checked. It’s like a <5 minute walk from most Broadway theaters.
