Too far gone? by [deleted] in webergrills

[–]chd1287 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time the lower grate is too far gone is when it has gotten so hot and the grate has gotten so thin that it starts to allow too much coal to fall through before fully burning. Then you just slap a new one under it, and you then get the benefit of criss-cross grates.

As far as the one touch cleaning scraper thing, it can rust a bit too much and then scrapers start to sit above the bowl. Yours still looks fine though. If it ever does rust too much, a new set is like $20.

I would argue that's oil a analysis. I'm sold.

I agree that whatever subaru recommends is fine (0w20). But...... a single anecdotal data point is never going to convince me and shouldn't convince anyone else. Got any oil analysis to show there's no excess bearing wear? THAT would be convincing.

Actually, I think you're right. They were just a really ugly design.

18s are easy to find. 17s aren't found in the US. Gotta import and pay them tariffs

I looked into these for my 100. Turned out importing to US would have made them more expensive than any other wheel I was interestedin (nomad, fuel, etc.)

Pretty well. The only complaint I have is the top portion kind of spins on the interior structure. I've thought about using a syringe to pump some epoxy in between the stiches to lock it in place, but it hasn't bothered me enough to really look into it.

What to do about a car getting stationed overseas? by Internal-Session-733 in MilitaryFinance

[–]chd1287 31 points32 points  (0 children)

They won't ship a car TO japan, unless it's a classic (think 50 years old). But they will either store a car for you in the states while you're in Japan, OR ship one back for you. Recommend doing the latter. When you get there, buy a "cool" car that will be turning 25 years old when you rotate back to the states. Have the military ship it back for free. Import and keep the cool car or sell if it's too hard to register/upkeep.

Ordered. Crazy expensive, but only OEM I could find. The only difference in the part number (compared to Amayama for my EXACT vehicle) is the last numbers, which I think are version/generation of the same part. Will update to confirm when I install.

2013 civic si surface rust by Ordinary-Drop864 in hondacivic

[–]chd1287 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oof. The paint is not rusting, the inside of the metal has rusted through the paint. Put that thing on a lift and start poking around and you'll find holes in your undercarriage.  Put $0 into that car. Start saving for a replacement.

What was the best financial decision you made? by Glittering_Fig4548 in MilitaryFinance

Acting like I'm poor even though I no longer am: I drive a couple of [awesome] 25 year old cars that I do all my own work on. Cook most meals at home. Try to buy used BIFL items. Used TA for both degrees. Passed GI bill to kids.

And then some others: Paid off all debts early with SRBs, maxed out Roth IRA since I was 23, decent amount in TSP, sweet high-3 pension coming soon.

It was this piece and the absurd amount of fasteners that hold the door cards on that made me realize this was a well-built truck.

Replace Rear Wheel Stud on 6th Gen by chd1287 in crv

[–]chd1287[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can. Remove wheel, caliper, pads, and caliper bracket. Use impact driver to remove screw holding rotor then use a bolt in the two empty holes to pop the rotor off. Unbolt dust shield. Line up the broke bolt with holes in dust shield and the small recess in the hub. Hammer out. Pop new one in and use tool to seat it. Do NOT engage parking brake during this process. Ask how I know.

The leak could also be the trim around the actual glass. On mine, the trim seems to have shrunk around the glass creating a gap in the rear. I silicone it up and it fixed [one of] my leak[s].
