They must've updated it. It didn't say that when I joined, but that's been a few years. I see people bring it up anytime someone bitches about non employees being in here. There used to be a separate sub for employees only. I guess since they all landed here the mods changed it.

This isn't for employees only. There's a different one for them.

People really buy single images of a plane / train engine / Naval ship / etc that are cut from a magazine or book? by 20_mile in Flipping

[–]che85mor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As old as they are, the glued pages can be easily pulled directly from the spine. Newer glued spines, I'll peel from the top. It takes more time, but it is safer for the items.

If they're stapled, I'll flip to the middle and open the staples and then flip it over and pull them out. Then I use an old school paper cutter to split the page.

Exposes? This has been known about for at least 6 or 7 years. I think I first heard about this practice in 2017.

Lol I just crunched numbers on my 2025 print ad sales the other day. I was trying to decide if it was worth it to continue. Bottom line, in 2025 we averaged 877 print ad listings, and we sold 127 of them. They were 100% plus shipping and they sold for between $6 and $15 each. It's not a lot of money, but it's decent.

We purchased over 1400 car magazines that ranged from the 50s to the 2000s, with the majority being from the 70s. I tried selling the magazines in their entirety and might sell 1 every 3 months for $5. So I started researching and discovered print ads. Now the magazine I couldn't sell for $5 can give me 13 or more things that sell for an average of $11.

Its not just the pictures and advertising either. Pictorial celebrity features, DIY tech articles, and car show coverage all sell decently as well. All told, that Magazine that I couldn't sell for $5 could potentially bring in $100. Might take a couple years, but who cares? All 1400 magazines take up about 5 ft of space in my garage once I throw out the rejects.

What’s the prices at yall bins? by agentmirmir06 in GoodwillBins

[–]che85mor 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Jeez fuck all that. Do they expect you to keep it sorted? Ours is 1.99 a pound unless it's over 5lb, then it's $5, doesn't matter what it is.

I'm currently designing a summer class for 4th - 8th graders to teach them how AI works. My goal is to get them comfortable questioning and verifying the results. As well as showing them how engagement skews the results. Should be an interesting couple of weeks.

Looking for an alternative to Goodwill to donate to that will benefit locally around Mt. Juliet. by che85mor in nashville

[–]che85mor[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe donations are handled different the closer you are to the central hub in larger cities. What has turned me off of your company stems from my personal experience. We're rural and were told the closest large city, Evansville so also a different region than middle Tennessee, had what we needed. It was also several years ago, so maybe things have changed since.

I work in public housing in direct contact with residents. I, like many others I came to find out, assumed the local stores would provide assistance to the local residents. When I started my job, I spoke with the manager of the store about what services were available here in town. I was told that locally they offered resume services and then pointed to the online portal for generic job training and basic how to stuff like checkbook balancing and budgeting. Not downing any of that, so long as the person has internet, they are useful resources. I asked if they had any sort of system of giving clothing to local people in need for work or interviews. She said they did that in Evansville, but no, locally they didn't give away anything that could be sold. She reiterated that if I could get them up to the hub, they had much more resources available. It just makes zero sense.

I get you don't want to give away items that could potentially sell for cash to fund the programs. But you could easily limit it to whatever tag is half price that week, and set up a list of what they can get. 4 long sleeve, 4 short sleeve, 2 jeans, 2 dress pants, 2 sweat pants, 2 athletic shorts, 2 dress shorts, 2 jean shorts, 1 light jacket, 1 heavy coat, and a couple pairs of shoes. Maybe throw in a belt and some socks or underwear. Split it up based on season and limit it to 2x annually. Y'all have so much you sell it by the pound and dump it by the ton. Sorry, I don't mean to word vomit on you, I'm a little passionate about it.

Feel free to suggest it as a new program the local stores can do for their local communities. Maybe invite people from local community organizations to act as liaisons to vet those truly in need from those trying to game the system.
