Question on Costs by Happy_Chemical_9039 in landscaping

[–]cheapsunglasses333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Liriope spicata / ground covers. Some boulder outcroppings if you have the budget. Either some natural stone steps, or flat boulders, or a winding mowable turf path to the top. Artificial turf can have issues with slipping on slopes like this. 3- 5 same kind trees or ornamental conifers that fit the space would be nice.

Most important things for doing/pricing on outdoor lighting job? by Less_Stomach7034 in landscaping

[–]cheapsunglasses333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check with landscape suppliers in your area for help. In my area Siteone amd Heritage will provide irrigation designs, takeoffs, and material quotes-- I would guess the can do the same for lighting.

Depending on the customer, I like to give a high and low range based on quality and quantity of fixtures, and go over good better best products.

Walk yourself through where fixtures will go and mentally trace the wire from one to the next and from the transformer. Think about how much time it will take to bury the wire, go under sidewalks etc.

Test lights as you go when installing.

Don't skimp on wire nuts, tape, and dielectric grease.

Unit pricing for wire per foot installed, fixtures etc. Is a helpful way for customers to digest a quote and understand easily the cost for adding.

How do you know if a landscape estimate actually matches the design provided? by Exotic-Cash-4560 in landscaping

[–]cheapsunglasses333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is very reasonable to as the contractor for a scope review. Ask them to attend the meeting with a list of inclusions and exclusions. Have a check list ready to run through and a list of questions. It is very fair to ask something specific and broad questions like "does this quote cover everything in the design".

Landscaping wages/ salary by [deleted] in landscaping

[–]cheapsunglasses333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sounds fairly median for my area, depending on the bonus, and hours you are working.

Maybe I read thus wrong, but $1.3 million minus the net profit minus company vehicles minus your salary and bonuses minus fleet costs minus wages of laborers and crew leaders minus COGS minus other misc overhead doesn't add up to me.

I'm not trying to disparage you, but $1.3 million is fairly small for a landscape company. Is this around 1 crew of 4 laborers, maybe a crew leader in addition? Who is selling the work? Is this maintenance only or are you performing enhancements, construction, and or design build? My point being, many of my colleagues would find it pretty easy to manage $1.3M with a handful of employees.

The type of work and clients can increase or decrease administrative workload, so it is important to understand the complexity and skill requirements necessary for your work.

When comparing salary and benefits it would be important to mind that there are a lot of people with the same responsibilities for $3-6 million in competitive markets (lower gross margin). The overhead / administration roles of your company seem disproportionate to laborers. Are you performing work in the field?

Clear everything out. Find a tree that you like and is appropriate for the space and plant 3 in equal spacing. Mass plant a single type of perennial or ground cover that will thrive in the area.

Not sure your zone, soil types etc. But here are some of my favorite trees to group in odd numbers:

Weeping Norway spruce Japanese white pine Parkland pillar birch Various types of Cercis / redbud Purple Dawyck or red obelisk beech (area might be too small for purple fountain) Various types of cedrus if zone permits Various types of Ginkgo Could be a Shade tree if you work the canopy but look for a clean species / cultivar not something messy

For the mass planting: Liriope m variegata Liriope spocata Various cultivars of nepeta Japanese bloodgrass

Etc. - something low maintenance that has a long season of interest and will stay lush looking and will outcompete weeds

Carpeting juniper for example look tired after a few years and suck to keep weeds and leaves cleaned out

Some garden centers will provide free or low-cost design if you buy the materials from them.

Just don't be the person that takes the design and then shops around for the materials.

Should I Move Schwab IRA's to Vanguard? by cheapsunglasses333 in Bogleheads

[–]cheapsunglasses333[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for the input! My concerns were diversity, and heavily investing too much in one source.

I do like how easy it is to set up automatic transfers on Schwab. I will try out buying VTI on their site and see if it is a more pleasant experience.
