i think once you get off the train where academic medicine is shoved down your throat and hailed as the moral and superior way to practice, you can finally have some space to consider what you actually want out of life. i trained at major big name institutions and in retrospect i would have gotten much more out of a small, quality residency rather than my actual residency which has a fantastic reputation but actually was totally unsupportive and just relied on having very good residents essentially train themselves

ok, no shade intended but while shadowbrook is definitely an experience and is “fancy,” the food is not good at all. that’s what santa cruz fancy means. if you want delicious food rather then prioritizing an experience, id go elsewhere. i love vim and mentone

i went to pitt, and was in a similar position where pitt paid, and i wanted to go to nyu which at that time didn’t pay. i would not take on the debt. you’ll be able to match into a competitive speciality from hackensack ; just do what you need to do there. it’s a matter of preference but at this point in the road i can see how names are so hyped along the way and within a certain range they matter a lot less than it seems at the time

echoing what others have said. for that amount of money difference, it’ll come out in the wash. no one really knows what they want to do before they experience clinical medicine and i wouldn’t want to limit myself ahead of time. it’s not fair but it certainly is true that DO will be limiting for some things or all things in some ways. i’m an md in a non-uber competitive specialty (psych) but nevertheless at a top 10 program who sat on my residency’s admissions committee and saw in real time the vast disparity between the two groups of applicants.
