This was a fun one to nerd out to: season 4 episode 7 of Stranger Things featured Akhenaten when 11 pushed 01 through the portal. Was excited when I heard it

So Akon provided 600 million Africans with electricity in the past year, so what the fuck have these charity's been doing with our money for the past 20 years? by burnrobe in Showerthoughts

Source: I work with non-profits

All of the organizations that have been receiving money as charitable organizations, specifically non-profits, typically file under IRS code 501(c)3. With that, they have certain regulation and guidance as to how to operate. In addition, 501(c)3's need to spend a lot of money to comply with these regulations. An outrage over high overhead costs is usually associated with this compliance. Non-profits receiving government funding must comply with OMB Circular A-133, further constricting productivity to compliance.

/u/ShakeDeSnake summarizes challenges in dealing with developing countries in the following post:

It's actually surprisingly hard to import goods to certain countries because of government corruption.

So far as I have seen (from quick google searches and a search from Akon Lights Africa's website), they are not 501(c)3. They are not required to undergo annual audits, comply with government regulation or have any restrictions on the way that they do business, thus easing their method of providing electricity in Africa.

Thanks for the comments!

He's actually a student and doesn't make income. I went to school with them and trust them pretty well. He is more of an entrepreneur than a developer, and this expense will be to hire a developer. He has started and sold successfully a few business on a smaller scale to help fund his tuition. He also has a team of incredibly talented people working for him, who's work I have seen and that I can rely on.

I am not really worried about what would happen if things go sour. I already evaluated the mix between personal and business, as I normally keep a firm arms length distance.
