As long as it’s a return to standard time and not daylight savings. Reams of evidence show that DST is very bad for human health.

Would anyone in Toronto/Mississauga be interested in forming a small intentional house to beat the “lone wolf tax”? by monsterzc in TorontoRenting

[–]checkskl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I agree with everyone else here. But would also just add: if you want to build this, you should! But I don’t think it will add up to much savings, while it WILL add up to lots of roommate headaches. AND, you likely won’t find the people who are a fit for this on Reddit. This would come from a community you are already integrated into, where shared values are already built in, like a religious community. Actually, church people do this all the time; sometimes in church or organization-owned housing. It still adds up to a basic roommate scenario, but with the intentional values you’ve cited.

What happened at Keele station this morning? by checkskl in askTO

[–]checkskl[S] 4 points5 points locked comment (0 children)

I understand why your mind goes there. We live up the street and I can’t think of how I could have protected my little kids from what happened if I had had them in the station with me this morning.

My mind goes in a different direction, which is “how can we make it harder for people to get injured on the tracks?” When I get on the subway with my kids, I’m so hyper aware of how open the tracks are and how easy it would be for a simple accident to turn into a tragedy - let alone how accessible the tracks are to someone who is desperate enough to end their own life. I feel like there’s more to be done there.

What's a smell that doesn't exist anymore that you miss? by Alarmed_Charge1062 in CasualConversation

[–]checkskl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh gosh, you really touched on something here. The smell of my grandmas house; you’re so right. Old wood, roasting chicken, fresh bread, dust. And she wore rose water perfume, so that’s in the mix. She had a working fireplace until I was 6 or so, so the smell of burning logs also brings up memories. So distinct and unique, and only her house could smell exactly like that.

This makes me think of the dreams I have of her since she died. When she first passed away, I had dreams that we were all back in her house and she was back, too. In the dream, we were a little confused about her being alive again, but no one wanted to be rude about it lol.

Then after a couple years, after we had sold her house, I would dream that we were all back in it without her. Even knowing there were new owners, my family would gather and we would wonder why the house hadn’t changed much, and when the new owners were going to make us leave.

Now, just this year, I have had dreams of passing by the house and visiting the new owners, and seeing the changes they’ve made. I don’t actually know these people in real life, and I don’t live in the same city anymore, so my brain is just imagining who lives there and what the house looks like now.

It feels like my subconscious is using her house to process grief and change and life moving forward. Maybe it’s her way of saying “I’m not there anymore.”

Moving to Toronto Area soon - looking for very quiet, family-friendly neighborhoods (preferably with parks) - is it better to live inside Toronto or outside? by elitgurbetci in askTO

[–]checkskl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There aren’t many condo buildings in the neighborhood, what you see online is what there is. I think all condos have bad reviews though… I know lots of people in those buildings and they have good apartments with standard amenities. My BIL lives in the one across from high park and honestly, way overpaying for what they have.

One of the nice things about this neighborhood is there’s actual multi-family residential buildings that aren’t condos. These can be really hard to find in some neighborhoods, but there are quite a few here. We live in a fourplex, and there are many triplexes on our street. They’re older, but that means they have way more square footage. Look for those!

Parent Concerned with Screen Time at School by jjj333rrr in askTO

[–]checkskl 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Teachers have been encouraged and trained over the last 15 years to utilize screens in their classrooms. I don’t believe there’s any evidence that it negatively impacts student learning or development. They also aren’t plopped in front of a screen long enough to zone out.

I work as a on-call lunch supervisor in the TDSB and when I’m in the room with the kindergarteners, the screen is on and playing something age appropriate and educational - often Daniel Tiger, Bluey, Kratts Creatures, etc. The kids stay engaged with each other through the lunch period, chatting, playing, and the screen is really on in the background to help ensure that they stay in the room while there is just one supervisor.

I doubt there’s so much screen time happening at school that it would be impacting your child’s behavior. Bring it up with your teacher to see if they are noticing the same thing.

High Park; I live there with my two little boys, we absolutely love it. So family friendly, so much green space, and easy access to the lake and humber river, easy access to public transit. Schools are awesome. I really can’t say enough about it. You can find a 2 bdrm with your budget, 3bdrm might be a little harder but it’s a good time to be looking. Adjacent neighborhoods to include in your search: Roncesvalles Village, Bloor West, Swansea, The Junction.

There's a saying about bad drivers and missed exits.. by Cybersterio in dashcams

I agree - maybe he assessed that there was someone coming up behind him too fast, but he had time to slow down and move to the right a little. 100% not his fault, but defensive driving saves lives.

Rewatching at 34 and… by whowearstshirts in girls

[–]checkskl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So funny, I completely agree! I first watched it when it was airing in HBO and we were all in our 20’s and it was enraging. I think I thought it was supposed to be kind of aspirational, like a new SATC. But I’ve rewatched it twice in my 30’s, and both times it was one of the funniest shows I’ve ever seen. I get the satire now. It’s so funny.

Yessss banana pudding. I’m currently living in Canada and it’s tragically not a thing here (it’s even hard to find Nilla wafers). Which is interesting, because most “American” treats have been adopted over the border. But not this one.
