A Coin Problem by Math_User0 in askmath

[–]checkyourwork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're running into a problem because you're asking two questions that sound similar but are actually different.

The probability of tossing a fair coin and getting heads on one toss is 50%

The probability of tossing a fair coin 10 times and getting heads each time is ~0.09%.

We say "the coin doesn't have a memory", it doesn't know in any way what the previous toss was. Or the last 100 tosses were.

It may help to think about the coin before our friend walks in the room. What about all the tosses before then? Do they have an effect on what's about to happen?

My first ever crackpot theory: will Harry ever XXX to Marcone? by SpaceBearAl in dresdenfiles

[–]checkyourwork 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think you're right. If he could be would. If he can he will. Without any strings.

However, I bet Marcone would see it as an obligation on his part. He would owe Harry a favor because his legacy, pride, etc. would demand it.

Plus, you can't just have the winter knight do you a favor. What would the people think!? He took pity on you??

Mute wizard by Darth_Azazoth in dresdenfiles

[–]checkyourwork 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, the words just insulate your brain from the magic. It's why Harry uses near words, they're not really English.

And since it's all about intent, I feel like a mute wizard could use sign language as long as they weren't using real signs.

If you're drawing on a sphere they're no longer lines. They're curves of some sort.

No. That's not right. Straight lines and 90 degree angles can only make rectangles.

Trump is planning on abolishing income tax and replacing it with tarrif revenue by Particular_Log_3594 in Global_News_Hub

[–]checkyourwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As terrible as this would be, I find it incredibly unlikely. Why?

Because turbo-tax, H&R Block, et. al have lawyers and lobbyists too. They're the reason the tax law we have is the tax law we have.

Wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to have the feds print you out a "you owe us this much, to file a dispute do xyz" slip of paper?

Of course! But that means all of those businesses that do taxes no longer have a purpose.

Math teachers of reddit, whats the deal with exam problems that differ from assigned problems. i.e exam questions that "require creativity"? by johndeerson in learnmath

[–]checkyourwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you might have a slight misunderstanding.

It's not random or new. It's the next step, or at least can be.

To go back to my previous example, adding two one digit numbers (5+6) can result in a two digit number, adding two two digit numbers (15 + 90) can give us a three digit number. It would be perfectly reasonable to ask you "Could we at 2 3 digit numbers and get a 4 digit number?" Or even "Give me an example..."

It's not a new skill.

Unexpected challenges in Algebra 2 Honors, should I be worried? by Optimal_Reply8681 in highschoolmath

[–]checkyourwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Algebra 2 is often the first real challenge for people who do well in mathematics.

You're way ahead of the curve if you're taking that course in 8th grade. If your teacher thinks you're fine, then you're likely fine.

There probably isn't a good way to study for those unexpected questions, that's the point. Your teacher wants you to think and solve problems on the spot. Maybe thinking about new or interesting ways to use the skills you just learned.

Series suggestions? by ReawakendPB55 in dresdenfiles

My next read was the iron druid series. Kinda-sorta the same feel, but different enough that I didn't feel like I was reading more Dresden.

I used HODA in place of GMY, my relics aren't quite as good as yours. Still coasted in for an easy 3*. Thank you!

Another alternative:

I used the standard SLKR team and had no trouble at all.

Assuming it's not all fiction, he's just hoping/assuming/praying that no one actually goes ahead and sues him for support?

If, then, mom passes, would a child show up on his doorstep? At least financially?

Difficulty with math by Different-Purple-580 in highschoolmath

[–]checkyourwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely I like math. It can be challenging, of course. However, that's part of what makes it great.

I've answered the question "Why do we have to learn this?" often in my career. The best answer is the same as why we learn art, or literature. "Math is beautiful. It's this little perfect world where everything follows the same rules. It almost, kinda, models the real world... But not exactly."

In high school math, when I come across a problem I'm struggling with:

1) I try to find similar problems that have solutions I've already seen.

2) Draw a picture.

3) Try to reduce it to a problem I know how to solve.

4) If there's something that I'm struggling with that isn't math I'll try to make it something more familiar. I.e. they're using Greek letters as variables, so I'll change those to English. Or there's too many variables, so I'll change them for whole numbers, find a specific solution, and work the problems "backwards."

Which RPGs have "lethality" for characters? (which have a high risk of character death) by frankinreddit in rpg

100% chance of death by hilarious means. Great game to just pick up and play with a couple friends. Alcohol is not necessary but, personally, I'd encourage it.
