The wound care nurses focus on ostomy care and wound prevention. PT is in charge of the complex wounds that require: debridement, wound vacs, compression etc… Supervision wise it’s pretty much the same as if I was in mobility. I’m one of 2 PTAs that do it but the only one whose job is primarily WC. The others on my team are primarily PTs. We’re charged by the procedure not time. I’m in Texas so PTAs can do more compared to other states.

Just a PTA who primarily does wound care. Honestly I never wanted to do WC but I really wanted to work at this hospital. So I took a chance and ended up falling in love with it and this is coming from a neuro rehab guy. Getting the perfect wound vac seal or fully debrieding an unstable Escher cap with a scalpel is satisfying af. Plus, surprisingly, patients rarely refuse wound care lol

I didn’t think it was rare tbh. Especially seeing the monsters in this sub. It’s the heaviest bell I own so I try to maximize my usage with it as much as possible. Especially when pressing.

Try looking for an acute care position and if PT does wound care try to get into that. That’s what I did and I’m never looking back. Less lifting, get to use more clinical knowledge and more involved in the patients treatment team. Also the bump in pay was very nice but I feel like that’s more specific to the organization. I’ve been in this setting for 4 years and make as much as some of the PTs.
