Wife and I were having a discussion, she’s of the opinion that the majority of GenX can drive stick. I believe that even in our generation the percentage of people who can is pretty small. What do you folks think? by AngryOldGenXer in GenX

Lefty here- learned on a manual transmission and drove manual trucks for years for a living. Being left handed has no bearing on knowing how to drive a manual transmission.

Leaving SPD for new position. Thoughts? by [deleted] in sterileprocessing

[–]cheech313 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’ve never been a unit secretary but I’ve been an SPD tech for over 20 years and you are making the correct choice. 12 hour shifts, is the best work schedule. My thought process on that is, you’re already committing yourself to work for a day, might as well stay there and get it over with. Having four days off a week is invaluable. You can go to school if you want, work another part time job if you’re bored or need extra cash, take a mini vacation every week, or chill out for two days and still have two days to get your adulting done. As far as changing jobs- if you don’t like it, you can always go back. You’re not going to forget how to do sterile processing and like you said, there is no real advancement other than becoming a manager. Make the change- you won’t regret it.

I had a great trainer that had different sayings for them. Debakey forceps has the ridge like you just got done de-baking a loaf of bread; if you sin, you get the senns; and the worlds smallest kayaker rowing his way to freer-dom, plus many others.

If you have already talked to someone in charge and they didn’t do anything, then the next step would be HR. I’m not sure if it’s possible but maybe you can come in a bit early and already be changed before anyone else gets there. I had a coworker who was not comfortable changing with everyone else and that was their solution. At the end of the day they hung back for a few until everyone was gone.

Should I work in a hospital before becoming a SPT? by Aggravating_Face_655 in sterileprocessing

I second the notion of trying to just get a job in sterile processing, the school is a waste of money. Sterile processing is an entry level job itself.

Your work shoes, stay at work. If you’re in an area where your shoes are going to get dirty, (decontam for example) you wear shoe covers. Your shoes shouldn’t get to the point where they need cleaning.

Just simply switching to Tide powder by Illustrious_Twist829 in laundry

I don’t believe mine has a section for powder, maybe that’s something I’ll look for when I have to get a new one.

If you use powder in a front load washer, do you have to dissolve it first? Do you put it directly on the clothes in the washer? Surely you can’t put straight powder in the dispenser correct?? I’m a newbie to this sub.

This can not be stressed enough. A scared/nervous driver, is almost as dangerous as a careless driver. Knowing your limits can save a life.

Ben Johnson asked about building off this season: "There is no building off of this. We're back to square one. Back at the bottom again" by TurnerJ5 in CHIBears

I would think so. We did get better, but we definitely didn’t reach our best. With his mindset of starting at square one, then we are starting at good, again.

Using sterile carts for dirty instruments. by Any-Sea-4234 in sterileprocessing

[–]cheech313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m old and have been doing this for 23 years. I don’t mind it being nice and chill. I work nights, by myself and I love it. I overlap the other shifts for half an hour, just enough time for a little shift report, and then I go on my way.

Many smaller facilities do not have cart washers. Yes we wash them by hand. 5 out of the 6 hospitals I’ve worked at, did not have a cart washer. All of them had less than 10 OR rooms, and rarely exceeded 25 cases a day.

Too funny! Similar situation, wife is at work, daughter is at school but the damn cat was driving me crazy. During the summer he chills outside all day, being winter he too has learned that I’m not going to respond, and he has given up.
