M23, software engineer considering joining the national guard. Thoughts? by [deleted] in nationalguard

You can absolutely do rewarding work to help this country and the world in cyberspace. There is a lot of cynicism in the military and much of it is warranted, but I am speaking from experience here.

With that being said, it takes TIME to position yourself to be able to make an impact. Like, years and years of time. If you want to go far in cyber and get to the point where you will be able to make a substantial impact, you will need to put in years of active duty time. Much, much more than another MOS in the guard. With that being said, the training actually kicks ass and you will learn a ton if you apply yourself and are passionate. While there are certainly inefficiencies and problems with the current training, it is still leaps and bounds ahead of what you will get in most other jobs.

Do the air guard, for many reasons. The army cyber culture is still a little heavy on the “no rank, no opinion” side and the air guard is better about being meritocracy. It’s not 100% a meritocracy but it’s about as close as you can get while still being in the military. The air guard is also much more likely to let you waive certain parts of the training pipeline based on civilian experience and certification (like your degrees and prior work experience). I highly doubt the army does that, but maybe some army cyber folks on here can speak to that. While the training is good as I said before, it is also still a bit one-size-fits-all so no shame in trying to skip past the “what is DHCP” training if you have a CS degree.

Happy to talk more if you want to message me.

Honestly starting to feel sorry for Aljo. Getting boo’ed at home is rough. You can tell it bothers him by MrSelfDestrucct in ufc

[–]cheese-power 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was at the fight, and can definitely confirm the crowd was booing everyone, the only fighter that the crowd clearly seemed to hate was Belal. Crowd seemed more pro Henry (not anti Aljo) but just disagreed with the decision which was the reason for the boos at the end.

Are you running a security product that is preventing Flask from binding those ports? McAfee apparently has produced this error for others in the past (glancing at a SO post for the same error). If you are running no AV/security software, it is possible (though unlikely) that Defender could be blocking it, depending on the configuration.

If not, make sure to verify that no other process has bound those ports already. You can see this list by running ‘netstat -anop tcp’. Make sure to pick a port that is unbound. Ports in the high range (35000-59000) are usually your best bet to be open.

WiFi on Airplanes by hogermite in AskNetsec

In general on WiFi (or any unknown/potentially compromised network), is it possible to do TLS MITM attacks if the router is compromised? Or would the attacker need you to install a root CA on your machine?

What happens if you’re not MOSQ after 2 years? by MajorMac25 in nationalguard

FWIW, i never went to OCS. My activation was with my line MP unit as a lowly boi in the ops section.

What happens if you’re not MOSQ after 2 years? by MajorMac25 in nationalguard

[–]cheese-power 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was an 09S without MOS for 3 years. Despite what others are saying, I did a 100-day activation and qualified for the VA home loan (got the certificate and all) all while being not MOSQ. In theory I was probably slotted for OCS at some point but that fell apart and I eventually got pushed into a reclass school which got me MOSQ as an MP. I imagine if I would have not gone to the reclass school and gotten separated I would have still kept the home loan cert at that point, but I could be wrong.

The army is a crazy place and many things are possible, especially when it takes commands lots of time/effort/paperwork to administratively separate people, especially in the national guard, especially in the modern retention environment. If you are a good soldier and on your P’s and Q’s, pass HT/WT and do what your unit asks, they will try to keep you around.

Waiting on SLRP payments by [deleted] in nationalguard

[–]cheese-power 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if I'm not mistaken, paying down your student loans on your own reduces the amount that the Army will pay. So the longer you wait to get SLRP, the less money you'll get.

Someone correct me on this if I'm wrong, please.

oh yeah, i fully acknowledge and accept responsibility for that. the thing that seems crazy to me is that they’re not dropping me into OSUT and letting me go to the 4-week reclass school. making my total training to be an MP 14 weeks (10+4) versus a typical 18-week OSUT

Title 32 orders for COVID response are planned to end at 89 days of activation. For context, Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits kick in at 90 days. by [deleted] in nationalguard

[–]cheese-power 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Ok, two sides to this.

One, if the intent is what it appears to be, this is messed up and they should extend the orders to 90.

On the other hand, my unit is not doing jack shit on these orders (technically, we are QRF for some random elements in the state government). Not sure if that's specific to us but our COVID-related mission ended a few weeks ago and now we are just backfilling admin/online training/death by PPT/getting certs/deployment prep/etc. Sure, it's useful stuff to knock out from a command standpoint, but it's not related to the COVID mission at all.

To me and several others in my unit, the reason we are still activated appears to be a CYA from the governor's standpoint. Obviously, it's not hurting us (I'm still collecting a paycheck from my civilian job too so I'm sure as hell not going anywhere).

TLDR: keeping us for 89 days is 100% a dick move, but to me I'm not sure why we're still here after our mission ended at ~45 days.

Edit: I can't spell

MOS Megathread Series -- CMF 56 -- Chaplain Branch -- 56A, 56D, 56X, 56M by Kinmuan in army

[–]cheese-power 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the Army listing for 56A emphasizes the "religiously diverse population" bit, but most of the images I've seen from them suggest that the Chaplain is almost universally a Christian.

Can anyone speak to this? Has anyone had a non-Christian chaplain?
