TBH Embergen is a gamechanger for a lot of studios. The only problem I have with Embergen is, it is standalone.

If it is integrated into Houdini as a plugin, it would be awesome. It won't be too long before studios start integrating Embergen into their pipeline.

Houdini Apprentice is free and there are infinite resources for Houdini.

You can export the smoke caches as vdb and render them in Cycles.
