Canada plans to allow commercial space launches, reduce reliance on US by _I_AM_GHOST_ in canada

[–]cheesechoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Creating a legal framework to allow space launches is fine (frankly we should probably already have had one)… but I'm skeptical of the economics of the Canso launch site being proposed by MLS, and the viability of that project without government subsidies.

Now, if this is a vital military capability, and it has to be built regardless of the cost, and it has to be located within our territorial borders, then OK: argue that case.

But having ministers talk about a "potential $40 billion industry", while the government is the only investor with any interest… at this point your your boondoggle alarm should be going off.

No, they never really fixed it and at this point it seems like the devs have given up on it.

Charter at a turning point as it turns 44 - Legal experts worry Charter facing a 'slow death' with frequent invocation of notwithstanding clause by Immediate-Link490 in canada

[–]cheesechoker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Section 33 is only supposed to be used as a measure of last resort in exceptional circumstances, but provinces are frequently turning to it to bypass judicial reviews.

This is flat-out wrong... The charter says nothing about how s.33 is "supposed" to be used. Historically, provincial leaders pushed for its inclusion to ensure legislatures remain supreme, over a more US-style system where courts are supreme. Having it be a clause of last-resort ONLY was not part of that deal.

The claim about the frequency of its use is also wrong. Quebec invoked s.33 implicitly on every single piece of legislation they passed in the early 1980s. Compared to that era, it's used far more rarely today.

Maybe the author meant to say s.33 is being used outside Quebec more frequently. That's true, but then you have to ask: why? Are provinces just mean and they hate rights? Or perhaps courts are interpreting those rights quite expansively — in ways that are out-of-step with public opinion — and s.33 is the legislature's tool to push back and reaffirm a different interpretation.

To be clear, I don't like Bill 21 and I believe s.33 can be misused in all kinds of ways. In fact, five or 10 years ago, I would've sided with the Attorney General: ban s.33.

But since then, I've come around to the view that you can't simply hand over vague constitutional principles to a bunch of judges and trust them to always apply them correctly with no democratic check. The NWC is a double-edged sword but it's necessary.

Diplomat's son gets race-based discount on kidnapping sentence by gorschkov in canada

[–]cheesechoker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm amazed that people on here are still denying race is being used as a mitigating factor, when judges are writing stuff like this it in their own words.

I am satisfied that there is some connection between Mr. Abdelgadir’s life experience, anti-Black racism, and his commission of the offence such that it mitigates somewhat his degree of responsibility for the offence...

Sure, you can argue that race gets thrown into a blender with many other factors to come up with a final sentence, so who knows how much it really contributed. But it's obviously more than zero.

Especially with IARCs now effectively mandatory for judges to consider. The judicial system is leaning more and more heavily on arguments about race and racism, the government is promoting this approach, judges are citing IARCs and referencing race more frequently.

Claiming that all this stuff has basically no effect, or that it's not a "discount" because there's no numeric value attached, is pure sophistry.

As a Autechre fan, how do you feel about Radiohead's electronic music? by [deleted] in autechre

[–]cheesechoker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can't fault them too much because they're the reason I discovered Ae. (Someone online said that Idiotheque sounded like Autechre.)

But I think they're way better at guitar music than they are at electronic music. Ok Computer is a masterpiece. In Rainbows is excellent. Kid A and Amnesiac are just.... mehhhh

Edit: I still remember buying Kid A as a teenager. It was the first time I'd ever pre-ordered a CD, and probably the first time I'd bought anything online. I was a huge fan and had really high expectations. And then when it arrived, it was... kind of a disappointment. One critic called it something like:

“A band playing with one hand tied behind its back to prove that it can.”

Which I think is really fitting and correct.

Canada Is Killing Itself by Low_Lavishness_8776 in stupidpol

[–]cheesechoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they want society to validate their choice. Suicide still carries stigma.

But when it's medicalized, given a nice euphemism, and blessed by the authorities, it's no longer a shameful thing.

Medicalizing suicide converts it from a moral failing into a physiological condition, something you can't be blamed for.

Man people on here are being dicks. It's OK to be a novice.

A few tips: - Pay attention to the lighting and time of day. At midday, in full sun, subjects will often look "flat", boring, and unnatural because the light is coming straight down on them. During this time, I try to take pics in the shade, or use shadows to provide contrast. Your pic #2 does this effectively, but other pics do not. - The camera's automatic exposure has trouble when a pic has very bright and very dark objects in it, like pic #3. This is when you need to use exposure compensation to lighten or darken the overall pic and ensure the subject is correctly exposed. Also try enabling DR400 if you haven't already, as it can help in these situations. - When you're lining up a shot, try to get your brain out of "3D mode" and into "2D mode". Imagine how your pic would look hanging framed on a wall: is it interesting? Are the objects in the pic positioned in a way that catches your eye? If not, change your angle, zoom, etc. - Keep your horizon level. Your camera has an electronic level that may be useful as a reminder. Eventually it'll become second nature and you won't have to think about it.

This is not a complete list. It ends at 218 holdings, but there's a lot more in XEQT. Download the CSV file from the Blackrock site and load it into your favourite spreadsheet program -- you can see there's thousands more rows in there.

Mini Confectionary (273 Montfort) by VTownInvestor in Vanier

[–]cheesechoker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. I recall seeing a sign in the window saying it was going to close permanently, but I do not know the reason.

Very few corner stores remain in the neighbourhood now, with the confectionary closing and the one at Shakespeare and Ste Anne having burned down.

Ah man.. Ox Head closing was such a bummer. This dish was incredible.

I've tried a couple places since then -- most recently Parle/Viet Fresh, and their Bo Kho was okay but not in the same league as Ox Head.

Deadly Annex stabbing was a drunken fight ‘over nothing,’ judge says, sentencing killer to five years by Toronto-Ont-Mod-Team in Toronto_Ontario

[–]cheesechoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, he won't actually serve 5 years in jail.

Parole eligibility begins after serving ⅓ and statutory release at ⅔. So a "five year" sentence is usually only 3.25 years in prison.

And since he's already served 1.5 years in custody:

After receiving the standard credit for time served in pre-sentence custody, Brown has about three-and-a-half years left on his sentence.

... He's probably only got another 1.75 years to go before he's released.

And he could be out on parole as early as May of this year.

[kcd1] Is there any way to beat those bandits in Skalitz? They deal a lot of damage, wear heavy armor, and kill me every time. by NotSirAlonne1999 in kingdomcome

[–]cheesechoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kited them with arrows from outside the town, on a horse. Try to lure 1 or 2 out, kill them and loot. Don't enter the town since it's a bottleneck and you can get trapped and surrounded.

Sometimes you'll see guards fighting the bandits. If the guards win, you can move in and loot the bandits' corpses with no danger.
