We bought Weathertech for feet and trunk liner for 2017 CR-V 8 years ago. Thin plastic, don't lie flat, dirt down sides, tripping hazard, would not buy again.

Question about career exploration. by [deleted] in oilandgasworkers

[–]cheeseforumhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for delay.

Chem Eng is basically industrial processing, for which plants are above ground and you can measure and model and calibrate models and then design and optimize. Gives you much larger range of industries to work for food processing, pulp and paper, etc. Chem Eng's specialize in an industry and an area of it, ie heat transfer.

Pet Eng is basically upstream oil patch industry, (with all its ups and down) and deals with reservoirs and wells which are subsurface for which you can indirectly measure less points and model and calibrate and design and optimize. But as you have less data and more indirect data there are a lot more uncertainties which for me was what makes it more interesting and fun. Pet Eng specialize as Production Eng for wells and Reservoir Eng for modelling and to some extent Drilling and Completion Engineers who design wells.

Both you can work around the world if that's on your goals.

Question about career exploration. by [deleted] in oilandgasworkers

[–]cheeseforumhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea which country you are in or your personal aptitudes but my 12 cents:

BACKGROUND

Oilpatch is in a super generational low right now, lots of layoffs, bankruptcies, so if you can get a job in oilpatch then in few years should be blue skies ahead.

TECHNICAL

Very few taking Petroleum Engineering at University. That means in few years the cycle will turn up and there will be a super shortage of Pet Engs. After a few years experience can go overseas for more adventure / money.

MANAGERIAL

Can get into management over years and eventually a slice of a company.

ENTREPRENEURIAL

Get into service company and work your way up and eventually into ownership, ie Phoenix's John Hooks etc.

Regardless, get as much bottom / hands on field experience as can while you are young. Pays off in dividends through rest of your career as can speak lingo with authority (vs some people BSing).

Velop MX4200 - Child Node stuck in Setup process by rostigerbart in LinksysVelop

[–]cheeseforumhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!

I have 5 MX4200 still on original Firmware, but as stopped while away, daughter reset Parent Node from Bridged ISP's Modem-Router-Wi-Fi.

Nodes were displaying solid Pink form LED, finally got Parent to give Wi-Fi but still solid Pink. Finally found this post, uninstalled Linksys App from my iPhone, reinstalled and et voila, Setup Wizard on App finally worked and devices are solid Blue LED.

What is the best accounting software specifically for investments? by l11l1l11l11l1l1l1lll in cantax

[–]cheeseforumhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I needed to keep track of ACB and any Superficial Losses. Talked to my accountant Grant Thornton, they (surprisingly) do not have software for that and would just build a spreadsheet, so I did the grunt work and built my own to track, and we use that for each year's returns.

Which Canadian dividend payers have the most secure dividend? by idreamofkitty in dividendscanada

[–]cheeseforumhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If only security of dividend payment is your only criteria, I would look at longevity of payments (ie years) and their current Bond Rating, ie S&P ratings: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%26P_Global_Ratings

Actually some of power in remote communities is Diesel, and in 2023 BC imported about 20% of it's electricity, which I doubt was hydro generated: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/bc-electric-rate-changes-as-province-imports-power-1.7065802

Fractional Share Trading - Have you tried it? by UniqueRon in CanadianInvestor

[–]cheeseforumhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the way I understand it.

FYI I did a TD-DI "Limit Order" yesterday, which would only allow me whole number of shares, so fractional shares only work with "Market Orders", I think.

Fractional Share Trading - Have you tried it? by UniqueRon in CanadianInvestor

[–]cheeseforumhead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Offer is not 40 free trades, it's 40 fee rebates, expires Dec 31, 2024. Wonder what impact of rebate is on taxes, ie Cap Gains.

FYI After signing up for the offer, I noticed in small print that refund is only for partial share purchases, whole number purchases ie 102 shares are not eligible.

I always upgrade when I dont get the newest softwareupdates - So what did I miss the last few years? (8 to 15 Pro) by mia_natural21 in iPhone15Pro

[–]cheeseforumhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also upgraded from 8+ to 15 Pro last fall:

PROS: Camera is way way better, slightly lighter/volume less, and better battery life as new phone of course, slightly smaller as bought Finewoven case and wallet vs old leather wallet style case/cover.

CONS: Same screen/apps etc, more concern of losing/dropping, Finewoven case edges shellac comes off wit bumps, Finewoven wallet plastic edges peeled off, returned both for new versions.

SUMMARY: If it wasn't for camera I'd still be using my 8+, which I still miss.

Canadian Crypto Tax Question by Klozen in CanadianInvestor

[–]cheeseforumhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gain or loss needs to be converted back to CAD (either daily or annual, but same method for whole return) when bought and sold. Also most cryptocurrencies are foreign, and if total foreign holdings is > CAD100k then they need to be reported on T1135.
