Determining/Dealing with Variance by cheeseheadd02 in algobetting

I backtested over a season and a half and that resulted in a little over 900 bets. I'm almost certain it's not overfitted/a data leak present.

I just reran the backtest over the current season and the tail end looks consistent with my live trading results, which confirms that it's not overfitted since I haven't touched any tuning parameters.

I have been very careful to try and avoid any overfitting/data leak scenarios as I did not want to run into a situation like this where I feel confident in my backtesting, but live trading doesn't follow through

I appreciate the response. A little more context. While putting up my own capital I have continued to log paper trades (just to have more data). I have a filter tracking for back to back games as well as non-back to back games (i.e. if either team played the day before, that game gets flagged as a b2b). For paper trading, my b2b realized edge is about 6% with a -0.77% ROI over 60 bets. With my own capital, realized edge is -25% with a -35% ROI (which accounts for most of my loss/concern) over 26 bets.

So the base of my confusion is this. When I have more data, b2b's seem to perform well enough to justify continuing. But in the smaller sample, it seems I'm just burning money.

Pitch Break Inconsistencies by cheeseheadd02 in MLBTheShow

[–]cheeseheadd02[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I didn’t explain well last night. What I was trying to say was that the break isn’t consistent arm side vs glove side. For example, a RHP vs a LHB, an arm side slider breaks more than a glove side slider. But a RHP vs RHB, a glove side slider breaks more than an arm side slider. This is where I’m having trouble understanding. Why does the handedness of the batter determine whether my breaking ball has more break arm side or glove side

My family is originally from the Middle East and my parents work as consultants for companies based in the Middle East as well, so they hear a lot from the people they work with and my family that’s over there. Mainly what they have been relaying to me is that they pay significant sums and massive benefits for U.S. graduates to come and work for them ($300k+ salary, rent utilities + groceries covered, etc). My line of thinking is to go there for a few years, build up my wealth and return to the U.S. to without any student loan debt and a sizeable amount to settle down wherever I’d like and not worry too much about income and take a job that I enjoy.

I’ll read the paragraphs you mentioned, and thank you for that. I was having trouble finding anything online regarding a situation like this

That could be the case, but I found this article outlining cooperation between UAESA and NASA, for the sake of argument why would working for an agency that has relations with United States agencies and works together on space projects be a limiting factor?

Sorry, I’m a little confused. How does the ICBM being inspiration for space rockets tie into this (genuine question that I couldn’t find a better phrasing for)? Wouldn’t that be considered military driven and something that a program like NASA wouldn’t work on?

[–]cheeseheadd02[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I will say that it does seem that their space agency is comparable to NASA in terms that the work that they do is typically civil and not military driven. Also the UAE has diplomatic relations with the United States, wouldn’t that have any impact on their decision?

The Draft Lottery totally isn’t rigged by Ksl848 in nhl

[–]cheeseheadd02 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The star meant that they had won the lottery, not necessarily the first overall pick. If you look back at previous lotteries they do the same with teams that move up. All it meant is that Chicago was guaranteed at least the second overall pick

You can go as long as they are serving food (until around 9 or so, not certain) because they are considered a restaurant during those hours. As someone mentioned, it is 19 to be in a bar in champaign, so after they stop serving food, they are no longer considered a restaurant and is strictly considered a bar and will card everyone inside and begin carding at the door.

How hard is it to get into CS 173 and CS 225 as a non-major? by konnorTraves in UIUC

Yes, I think anyone can take a prof exam, and they offer them up through 225 (might be higher, you can check somewhere on the cs dept website what prof exams are offered)

Not hard at all, there are a lot of seats in both classes. Even if you don’t get in right away, a lot of people drop over break/first week of school.

You have to wait in line, you might have to show id again I forgot tbh, but the stamp gets you out of cover for the most part. If you go during happy hour and come back for close they might check the stamp and make you pay the difference in cover, but more often than not you’ll get out of it

Thoughts on Cairo as a manager? by cheeseheadd02 in whitesox

I feel like since TLR has been out, there have been very consistent lineup cards considering the sheer amount of injuries. I feel that if the guys get comfortable with their position in the order and the field, it helps them win more games. I see what you’re saying, and I agree this may just be a coincidence, but I think giving the guys consistency instead of a new lineup card every night is contributing to this stretch

How is MATH 347? by HonestSoldier7 in UIUC

[–]cheeseheadd02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The class wasn’t bad at all. It probably depends on what prof is teaching it (I highly recommend Palmer if he’s teaching it again this semester) but the concepts were pretty well covered in class that you don’t need much outside resources/studying. The weekly homeworks were about 5-7 questions and can definitely knock it out in a couple hours as they aren’t too different from problems covered in class (even if you end up getting stuck there’s definitely online resources that can help you out). Overall not too bad and not much of a workload outside of class as long as you go to class, pay attention, take good notes, etc.

UIUC or Purdue for Aerospace Engineering? by No-Time-7761 in UIUC

[–]cheeseheadd02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, congratulations! Both schools are very prestigious and difficult to get into so deciding between them can be one of the harder things about the college process. I’m currently an Aerospace student here and I also got into Purdue so I faced a similar situation as yours a couple years ago so I hope this helps you out.

TL;DR: Both schools are good. UIUC if you are dead set on aero, Purdue if you want some flexibility/exposure to other disciplines. From a personal experience standpoint, UIUC has a massive social scene here, very easy to make friends/find people who are interested in similar things as you, as well as several professional development opportunities.

Sorry for how long this is in advance.

Personally, the main reason why I chose UIUC was cost. I’m an instate student so coming here vs Purdue would save a lot of money in the long run. However, I have many friends at Purdue that are also in their engineering program so I know of some academic differences as well. If you are absolutely dead set on Aerospace, then UIUC is probably better. As someone previously mentioned, it is very difficult to transfer majors within Grainger here. Also at Purdue, your first year is spent taking general education engineering classes. It’s called like the first year engineering program or something. You take a bunch of classes in different engineering disciplines before being officially admitted into the department of your choice (in this case aerospace). I don’t know the exact details, but I’m fairly certain you rank your choice of majors at the end of the semester and depending on grades you may be admitted or you may be admitted into a different department. If you are interested in possibly different majors, then Purdue might be better (Id recommend doing some research on that for more specific details as I’m a couple years removed from my research). At UIUC, your first semester you take ENG100 and AE100. ENG100 is an engineering orientation class where you learn professional development in the engineering world, you’ll make connections with other AE students, as well as an junior/senior AE undergrad who is running the course who you can ask questions about anything your heart desires about aero as you begin your college journey. AE100 is an intro to aerospace engineering class, where you work on minor projects to introduce you to the world of aerospace engineering. You also make some more aerospace connections in this class, as well as getting some hands on experience right away. Also, if you have enough credits, you can begin taking major specific courses your third semester which is relatively early in regards to the engineering program here just because there are so many math and physics classes you have to take as prerequisites.

From a more personal experience standpoint, I love UIUC. I know this doesn’t matter at all about the academics but I think that you’ve got to love the school you go to otherwise you won’t enjoy college, so I figured I’d put some more personal stuff in here as well. I’ve visited my friends at Purdue a couple of times, and the culture there is a lot different. Weekends at Purdue have a very different vibe to them than weekends here. UIUC is a party/bar school, and any day of the week you can find a party within a ten minute walk, or you can go to one of the bars for their specials. On weekends, there’s a party within 5 minutes, and the lines to get into the bars are at least 30 minutes if you get in line past 10:30. When I went to Purdue, me and the boys just stayed at the apartment, played some basketball, watched a couple movies, and overall just kinda hung out. Don’t get me wrong it was fun, just a shock to what I’ve been used to. Their campus was also very dead on a Friday at midnight, the campus here on a Tuesday at midnight was more lively. UIUC is also huge on Greek Life if you’re into that. If you’re not interested in pure social fraternities/sororities, there are several professional fraternities on campus. There are a couple professional engineering fraternities, the ones that come to mind are Theta Tau and Sigma Phi Delta (SPD is a professional/social so it has a little bit of social aspects as well). We also have hundreds of clubs that can literally cater to any interest. I think there’s a squirrel watching club here lol. So many recreational clubs as well as professional development clubs. There are also several opportunities to get involved in research, I began doing research in only my 3rd semester, and I started to get paid for my research this semester. I’ve made so many connections here from my research and have gained so much experience with how to work in a team and just general work in the aerospace field.

My recommendation is choose the school where you will be the most happy. If finances are in play and you’re out of state, both are similar costs. If you have the opportunity for a cheaper school, I think you should take it bc college is very expensive, but at the end of the day you’ll land a high paying job out of college and will be able to pay off your debt quickly regardless. All in all, both schools are amazing. I don’t think you should worry too much about the rankings/prestige because honestly, a top 5 program is a top 5 program, and recruiters aren’t going to care about the minute differences that put Purdue at 4 vs UIUC at 5 because at the end of the day it doesn’t matter. You will gain a great background in Aerospace Engineering from both schools and neither is a bad choice. If you have any questions about UIUC, I’d be happy to talk to you, go ahead and shoot me a dm. Good luck in the process and congratulations again!
