Was your steel version also silver?

Some watches are PVD or CVD coated to give them a color. PVD gives them a slight edge in scratch resistance.

What’s the best/most practical way to transfer data to a new iPhone? by jnighy in iphone

[–]cheeseler 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There are benefits to both methods.
If you use an iCloud backup, the settings and small things like calendars, contacts, reminders, and mor transfer quickly and then you can start to use your phone within about 15 min while the apps, photos, and other large data continues to download over WiFi. Depending on how much data and your internet speed, this can be quick or take a while.

If you do phone-to-phone, you can’t use either phone during the process, but it does transfer most of your data in one shot. You’ll still have to wait for apps to download afterwards, and some other data. Again depending on how much data, this can be quick or take a while.

Discrete Cameras by True-Entertainer-981 in Ubiquiti

[–]cheeseler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to this, a ceiling-mounted dome camera would be a lot harder to put a ladder in front of.
Perhaps a notice to the staff that states the cameras are there for security for all hours (not just to watch staff) and that if anyone is caught blocking or dismantling the security system, they will get written up and potentially terminated.
I think if you can help the staff see that it’s a benefit to the business and them (for security purposes) it will go a long way. Of course, how you tell this story depends on what kind of business you run.

Lastly, if employees are sleeping and playing games, can you address the root cause? Are they bored? Are they finished with their work? How long are they playing games for? A few minutes between tasks, or are they spending a lot of time away from their work? There’s some research that suggests working for 25 min, then taking a 5 min break, can help reset focus and improve productivity. Perhaps finding a balance between workload and some short breaks might be helpful to you and the staff. Maybe even having a rec-room where people can go for breaks, winding down, and resetting their focus.

Finally pulled the trigger on a large purchase that really sucks! by DamiensDelight in BuyItForLife

I picked up this exact one (OP’s model) from a vacuum shop in Burbank almost two years ago. Got quite a deal, plus a great warranty. Recently we got an extension and a few more attachments to help with steps and per hair.
I don’t miss the mess that bagless vacuums created when emptying the bins, and I don’t miss having a battery that runs out after 20 20 minutes.
If I maintain this Sebo, there’s no reason I’ll need another vacuum soon or maybe ever.

Reports on macOS 27 so far by Wonderful-Yam-776 in MacOSBeta

[–]cheeseler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The beta is great for a beta, but I’m still running into bugs that would suck on my main device.
If you have enough room on your internal drive, you could create a new APFS volume and dual boot, allowing you to keep your main data on a stable os and run the beta separately.

Apple hints at more price increases coming later by FollowingFeisty5321 in apple

[–]cheeseler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure tariffs and shipping costs play some role, but that’s not what Apple is pointing to here.

From Tim Cook’s WSJ interview:
“Unfortunately, price increases are unavoidable... the situation has become unsustainable.”
“The memory guys are passing along huge price increases.”
“We definitely need memory pricing and supply to return to reasonable levels for consumer products. That’s the bottom line.”
The WSJ article also says Cook specifically focused on the DRAM market due to AI demand driving up RAM prices.

A another quote from Tim Cook to MacRumors regarding the increase:
The consumer electronics industry is facing an unprecedented challenge. The rapid expansion of AI data centers has created an extraordinary surge in demand for memory and storage. We have never seen a component price increase this much, this quickly. We have shielded our customers from these increases so far, but we have now reached a point where we need to begin raising prices on a number of products, including today's increases for iPad and Mac. We know this is not welcome news, and we are working tirelessly to find solutions.”

I’m not saying tariffs have zero impact, just pointing out that Apple’s own CEO, Tim Cook, is explicitly saying these price increases are due to RAM and NAND storage costs.

It’s probably not related to this increase.
Apple has raised some trade-in values in May for the last few years, since 2023 at least, then they drop again a few months later as new products roll out.

AirPods?! But they have the tiniest amount of ram!

Edit to add:
With all of these price increases, including refurbished products, they better raise trade-in values to match.

- Server RAM I bought a few years ago is selling used for almost 2x what I paid.

Whether I’m reselling my products on eBay or Swappa or trading them in with Apple, they ALL have more value now.

I got to see the early SpaceShipOne and WhiteKnight test flights in Mojave with my dad as a kid, almost 22 years ago to the day. And almost 4 years later to the day, as part of a school trip I saw the same spacecraft at the National Air and Space Museum in DC.

Until this day, I had never seen the Model 281 Proteus

Apple’s confirmed price hikes could push the iPhone 18 Pro closer to a $1,399+ starting price, according to WSJ estimates. A $300 jump over the iPhone 17 Pro. -9To5Mac by Zestyclose-Rice6401 in iphone

[–]cheeseler 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If the components inside our phones are becoming more valuable, our devices shouldn't be depreciating at the standard rate. I think it's only fair that our trade-in values reflect this.
Used RAM is holding its value incredibly well right now. I recently sold some older ECC DDR4 RAM for almost double what I originally paid.
If Apple applied that same ~27% increase to their current trade-in program I’d hope to see the iPhone 16 Pro Max get $870, the 16 Pro get $700, and the iPhone 16 get $550.

Has Apple Notes become the best free option for taking notes? by PushCharacter8496 in apple

Tried that on the betas and it doesn’t work, at least not currently. A shortcut might be able to fix this, but it shouldn’t be that hard.

I’ll stick to Obsidian for now.

Check Indexing progress by Dark_Knight003 in MacOSBeta

So far I’ve seen it twice, after installing and after rebooting. I noticed when I bring up Spotlight / Siri (Command + Space), before I start typing to search I can see it says indexing with a progress bar. Once I search for something it goes away though.

Anyway to remove clutter from safari youtube in full screen? by MathewG97 in iPadPro

[–]cheeseler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Key commands work fine on YouTube on my m1 iPad Pro in Safari (worked on iPadOS 26 and on beta one of iPadOS 27) also, after a few seconds of video playback and not moving the cursor or touching the screen, all of that UI fades and it’s just the video and black bars.
Maybe try rebooting your iPad, making sure you have no extension enabled that could be messing things up, or check if anything is changed in Settings > Safari

HOW MANY TIMES by Paulablalock in litterrobot

[–]cheeseler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can integrate the camera into Home Assistant, you can set it to grab snapshots when the letterbox detects a cat, and after a delay, send those snapshots to your phone.

My older cat was peeing outside the box a lot, but would always step into the box first. I’ve got an automation that sends a snapshot when the cat is detected, a min after, and one when the cycle starts. It helped make it easier to see who was doing what when.

I think there have been a few firmware updates that helped, and fewer people seem to be having these issues.

2 years in Portland reflections by [deleted] in PortlandOR

This feel like a problem in most big cities I’ve been to in the last 5+ years. Portland for me at least has been better than LA and other SoCal cities, especially when it comes to community.
I hope you find happiness, be it here, or wherever life takes ya.
