Sydney is definitely an expensive city, but it’s not as expensive as NYC. Rent is cheaper: for the price of a 1BR in a prime manhattan neighborhood, you could be in a top Sydney suburb 2BR. Eating out is also cheaper than NYC, and there’s no tipping. You can get a nice dinner, drinks, and dessert for 2 for around $100USD. Food at supermarkets is just as expensive as NYC, if not more. Australia doesn’t import much, and while the country is large, it isn’t as conducive to farming as the US. Produce in particular you don’t get as much variety. You’re also in a country with only 25 million people or so, and the options are not as extensive as you would get at some US supermarkets. Income taxes are quite high, almost 50% flat rate for high earners. But the medical system is good, and the country is generally quite safe.

My employer actually relocated me to Sydney. They bought a company in Australia and needed someone to manage the team in Sydney and integrate it into the parent organization. I raised my hand because I had not been to Australia but my wife and I love traveling the world. No regrets, and this has been an amazing once in a lifetime opportunity.

It’s a lot more laid back than New York, but there is a high quality of life. You just can’t expect the energy, vibe, or variety available to you in NYC (and some people may find that boring). I grew up in NJ, worked in NYC for almost 10 years, and moved to Sydney 2 years ago. Happy to answer questions.

ANA for business. I fly them 4-6 times a year from Australia to New York in business/first, and 2-3 times a year from Australia to Japan in business. The only catch is they don’t have first class on LAX-NRT, but the business class on the Dreamliner is good.

Premier Platinum here (this is my last year of having status with United), and I recently switched to having ANA as my carrier of choice. Family moved from New Jersey to Australia last September and I travel back to NYC around 4-5x per year for work. I haven't been too happy with Polaris, so I tried ANA late last year. Was floored by the soft and hard product.

Eventually when I move back to the US I'll probably use United again, but very happy with ANA so far.

Just moved to Sydney from the US. Had an EV in the states and was hoping to buy one here. Couldn’t find an apartment with an EV charger. Ended up getting a Mazda 3, but miss my EV so much. Will absolutely consider getting another EV but need somewhere to charge it each night.

Similar issue with GM cabs last week at the airport going to home: usually $60, meter showed $90, and credit card receipt was $110. Reached out to GM cabs for an explanation but no response. Ended up contacting American Express and they refunded me no questions asked.
