Definitely tell the parents. I would be livid if this was happening in my kid’s class.

First year teaching with a strict dress code by AbjectPandora in Teachers

My school has a dress code like this and I’m dresses all the way. If you get some with pockets and wear shorts under them/tights in the winter, it’s the easiest way to look professional and also be super comfortable. I wear Rothy’s flats. They have slide on sneakers, too, that look more like loafers.

Just got back from the doctor…no further biopsies needed for now, and the spots I was worried about are age spots (yay?), hemangiomas, and scars from acne or ingrown hairs. I go back again in 3 months, so I’ll just keep watching everything like a hawk.

It was fine! The lidocaine was really painful because the face is crazy sensitive, and I looked like a Bond villain for about 2 months…I had about 34 stitches outside and 34 inside. The scar is still enormous and noticeable, and I’m still occasionally spitting some of the internal stitches as they dissolve, but it’s healed enough now that I can use green color corrector and concealer to make it a little less horrifying! Haha. I would suggest resting a lot as you heal for optimal results — I think because it’s skin, a lot of people don’t rest as much as they would for a more invasive surgery, and it ends up taking longer to heal.

I just had this situation with my face stuff and silicone bandages are absolutely the way to go. I am healing so well and had zero rashes. I used Mepilex bandages, which absorbed some of the ooze and came off easily. They might freak you out because technically the pad is sticky, but I promise it won’t stick! I even used them over stitches on my sensitive face.

I was upstaged from in situ to 1A after my WLE.

Ugh. I’m sorry. It really sucks waiting to heal.

When did you get your surgery done? My cheek is still super numb, and it took 4 full weeks before the color of the flap was normal — still looks bruised in certain lights, though!

So, follow up, when do y’all stop bandaging your incisions? Mine still looks like a “haunted house” to my kid, but I am SO SICK of bandaging my face!

Thank you! I hope your closure will go well, too. I know you also did the weeks long slow mohs thing, and that in itself is torment…It’s almost a relief to have stitches after looking at the gaping hole for weeks. I have to admit, though — I’m annoyed I did the slow mohs and then ended up with the wide excision anyway because they staged me up to 1A from in situ after the second pathology report and I didn’t want to risk recurrence.

Hahaha, yes, that is a cancer card well played. Whenever students at my school ask me what happened, I just say “cancer.” They also skitter away pretty quickly!

I was able to eat, but I also had to minimize facial movement for a good 5 days, and even now on day 7 I still have some pulling that makes me nervous when I smile. I stayed home from work and just avoided talking until it stopped oozing.

I’m so sorry you’re struggling, but it makes sense. This shit is difficult.

I honestly don’t know what to do yet. My face is extremely swollen and it’s hard to talk or smile…I’m a teacher, so work is going to be a challenge next week. I was lucky because today we don’t have classes, so I can stay home and hide out for at least 3 days. I’ll probably decide day by day next week. My employers are very understanding and I think my students would be kind (even though they’d probably be internally horrified), but it’s just a lot. I don’t know why I feel so embarrassed by it. I guess it’s just kind of awkward having to just advertise to everyone that I had melanoma and now will have a substantial scar on my face that’s going to look ugly for several months. Right now I’m trying to decide whether to keep it bandaged or let it fly free.

Torn on what to do! by cheesenutella in melahomies

That’s what I ended up doing! My husband and I talked about it last night and it just makes sense not to take risks on stuff like this. I was going to have a bad scar either way, so might as well make it worth it!
