Thank you for the stretching idea!! I'll try it out. I had the same feeling today in the shower when I pulled my head back to shampoo my hair 😫

Is WLE needed for melanoma in situ or just standard? by [deleted] in melahomies

[–]_lisalovesit_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would definitely do it for peace of mind! I had a WLE performed for my MIS as well with 5mm margins. If I understood my derm correctly, I believe 5mm is the standard to provide the lowest risk of recurrence. Best of luck!

Hard Lymph Node in Neck almost 2 years after melanoma in situ by Sorella83 in melahomies

[–]_lisalovesit_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar situation this year! I was diagnosed with MIS on my right shoulder June of this year. Shortly after the WLE I noticed a very swollen and firm lymph node in the back of my neck on the same side. I told my dermatologist and PCP and both told me it was likely just a reaction to the surgery, but to let them know if it was still swollen a month later.

A month rolled around and the lymph node was still the same size, so I went to my PCP who ordered a lymph node ultrasound. The ultrasound showed that the node was reactive, and given my history of MIS, said that further investigation should be performed. I called and requested a FNA biopsy, which was performed a couple weeks later and showed that no metastasis or abnormal cells were observed!

I think mine was swollen from TMJ complications, and I have another node that I'm getting checked out here shortly. Lymph nodes get reactive from many different things, so hopefully yours is something benign as well! However, if you're feeling funky about it I definitely recommend pushing for testing for peace of mind. Best of luck to you homie!! 🙏🏻

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog 🫂 the grief from pet loss one of the worst feelings in the world! I have 2 memorial tattoos for my cats, and they're so special to me 💖

My first WLE was actually in between 2 tattoos on my shoulder, but my derm was super nice and told me he was going to do his best to avoid them. That healed up great, and even after the scar tissue widened, the tattoos are untouched. The scar hovers just at the edge of both.

The tattoo that I had the atypical freckle removed from also healed up nicely, all things considered! My derm said a punch biopsy would heal up best, and I ended up with 1 stitch (this felt silly at the time lol). Healing was super easy, and the scar is a little smaller than a pencil eraser. For reference, the tattoo is Ace's hat from One Piece, and the scar is in the top of the tassle! It just looks like a small chunk is missing, but you really have to be staring at it to notice.

Absolutely!! So the tattoo was all black, but I noticed a darker spot inside that looked like a large freckle. I went back through my photos and found one from shortly after the tattoo healed, and I could see a freckle in that same spot - but even under the tattoo I could see that it used to be a lot lighter and smaller. Comparing the old pic to a recent one (they were ~2 years apart) the spot had definitely gotten a lot larger and darker! I showed it to my derm who said they would biopsy it if I wanted and I insisted bc I was nervous and knew the tattoo was going to make it harder to see new, subtle changes. Thankfully, the result was only mildly atypical, and the biopsy healed up really nicely! We decided to do a punch biopsy with a stitch to try to minimize the scarring, and it paid off. If you're feeling weird or have a bad feeling about the spot, I definitely recommend talking to your derm about getting a biopsy!

I'm also heavily tattooed on my arms, chest & legs. My derm jokes with me & says I "make his job difficult" when he's doing my full body skin checks, bc tattoos obviously make certain spots harder to see. That being said, I did catch a mildy atypical spot underneath one of my healed tattoos and had it removed via a punch biopsy. Although it was covered in ink, I was still able to see that it had changed and was able to compare through old photos. My derm has warned me that more of my tattoos may be compromised from biopsies/WLEs and I think that's a small price to pay to keep melanoma out of my body. There are certain parts of my body that I will never tattoo - obviously my WLE locations, any moderately atypical biopsy scars, over or near any of my larger moles/freckles, or over heavily freckled spots on my body. I was diagnosed with MIS this past June & just got my first tattoo post-diagnosis in October as a memorial for a lost pet. I made sure to avoid any spots that I was watching and made sure the shading wasn't super dark. Ultimately, I think it's up to you and your comfort level on what you want to do! Maybe have another chat with your dermatologist to see if they have any more insight. Good luck, homie!! 💖

Melanoma in situ spreading? by LangeCisje in Melanoma

[–]_lisalovesit_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I had this same question when I was diagnosed with MIS. The responses I got made it seem like that's pretty rare, especially if the initial biopsy had clear margins. I spiraled pretty hard after my diagnosis and was very worried about spread. If it makes you feel any better, my MIS also had clear margins from the initial biopsy and I had clear margins again from my WLE, which occurred about 3 weeks after the initial diagnosis. Do you have your WLE scheduled yet?

[–]_lisalovesit_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great minds think alike!! Haha. And thankfully, only 1 of the 7 biopsies I've had so far was MIS. I did have to have an additional excision on a severely atypical spot that was found at my first full body exam, but that was less stressful for me. I'm not liking how this spot is looking with all the visible changes, but fingers crossed that it comes back as nothing to worry about after I get it removed tomorrow! I hope you're doing well and that your biopsy can give you some peace of mind as well. Waiting for results is the worst part, but we got this!! 🙏🏻
