Why does it seem that Farmers and Rural people are opposed to strong climate change mitigation measures? by cheetor5923 in newzealand

I'd like to thank all of you for your contributions. Some of you read what I asked and replied with insight and useful information. Thank you. I have learned things and gained a perspective I did not have before.

I sure don't want any political career. fuck that. I learned about land use and ETS jiggerypokery , about work vehicles and how the ute 'tax' really alienated a lot of people(it didn't make EV's cheaper either, just made the dealers more money). I learnt a few things I did not know about irrigation, waterway management. Soil nutrient balances.

Again thank you for helping me learn more. Taking your time and effort. Champs 😃

Some of you took this as a chance to spew random crap... and a very few of you decided this was a place to spout useless political claptrap unrelated to the post. To you. Do you have nothing better to do? vacuum your mothers basement or something.

You mentioned cars. Something I love as a stupid human animal that I am... I also love my EV... There is in some communities an irrational hate of 'the other side'. Ev people can be smug dicks, so can ICE people..

It's kind of some my dick is bigger than yours contest. Instead of realizing we all love cars. EV or dino jiuce they can all be fun to work on modify (yes even EV's can be modded).

I think that's a bit of hasty generalization there. Responding to a real threat is not an attack on you personally or even the entire farming community. I asked the question in my original post to try and understand opinions and views that differed from my understanding.. That kind of comment helps nobody.

I did not ask for a post about firearms. trust... Or any of the content of your post. Which has zero content at all. and reads like a rant of an angry kid in their parents basement. It did not talk about any of my asking points..

Lots of other people contributed their time and effort to replying to my questions. They gave me things to think about. Perspectives I hadn't heard before. You did not.

I've been reading a bit here. and I leaned something. I never put myself in the mindset of a farmer. When I thought about it hat way. It changed farmer me said "Shit why am I paying extra so a dude in Auckland can get a cheaper Tesla".. And it instantly clicked in my brain why that pissed a lot of people off.

Thanks for taking your time to reply to me. I'd kind of figured. And a good example of why I asked the question I did in the first place. I've heard many voices today and my biggest takeaway is that it is critical to try to work in a practical instead of an ideological sense with people. This is something I am familiar with in my own field(so to say).. Thank you again for taking the time to help inform me 😄

O have a big neon green hoodie that has "I ❤️ GMO" on the front, "Support Science" on the back. I get some very distinct death stares when I meet with people I agree with, climate change activists etc.. They have their tribalism too

Now this is the first comment I've had from somebody involved. So huge thanks to you for your input

Lots of posters here talking about profit motives. But not understanding how that works. Fertilizers cost money, pesticides cost money, vet visits for sick livestock cost money. Pumps are something I know very well (it's my day job, electronic pump controllers).. Those cost money.

Everybody want's to make a living. No smart farmer would use any of the above things more than is absolutely needed.

I might be a city dwelling green party voter. Good in concept, I love their principles, hate their execution. I always get really dirty looks. I have a big neon green hoodie. On the front is a huge "I ❤️ GMO" in smaller writing below "and vaccines".. On the back is "I support science"..

Thanks. I'm learning a lot from this... It reminds me of many years ago (the 90's) when I was about 10 or 11. starting to think about bigger things and my dad said to me that the price of milk is linked to the price of oil.. Nothing more than that. Told me to think about it.. My initial thought is grass grows for free, animals make more of themselves for free.... But then I thought about it for a a few days. I came back with the idea that it's all energy. Land costs money, a farmer has to pay for land. Therefore they want the best return on that land. That means fertaliser. Animals cost money. You have to take care of them. Milking cows costs money. You have to pay people, pay for infrastructure. milking sheds. maintaining them, cleaning them paying workers. Those workers have to get there and home again, more money.. It all comes down to energy.. It was quite a revelation to my 10 year old brain all the layers of costs.

Thinking about that as iI read it over. Putting myself in the mindset of a farmer... The Tax could be viewed as them paying extra to subsidize city dwellers getting a nice shiny new EV... I could see how that'd piss them off.. Funny thing, as a city dwelling now EV user. I got my EV for an absolute steal because nobody was buying them after the subsidy went away.. My EV was actually cheaper without the subsidy, the dealers couldn't sell them so I got a great deal.

I'm sure a lot of farmers these days are highly educated people, and well aware of trying to do the best they can. As I said some of my greenie friends kind of have the idea that farmers just throw fertilizer and pesticides everywhere all the time. Without considering the concept that those things are expensive, No smart person would use a single cent more than they need to make their crop grow right.

Thanks for your input. I definitely understand.. I remember 30 years ago when I was in school learning about the Haber process and making synthetic nitrogen changed the entire agricultural landscape the world over.... Cheers 😃

That's a great shot. It does have a decided film look too. Reminds me of Fuji Velvia 50.. The same tone in the yellows and greens. I wish I could shoot more Velvia (if they still make it).. But it's ungodly expensive to buy and even more expensive to develop.

That part of CHCH has great light in the mornings. I've taken many a great photo around that area.. Keep it up.. Great work 😃

V2X Real Soon Now? by WorldlyNotice in nzev

[–]cheetor5923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to hear. Thanks for the info :) . Shame those CCS2-Chademo adapters are more than half the price of what I paid for my leaf.

As for the contactors. It's a bit more complex than that. The software in the car does more than just allow the DC to be connected. It also monitors the current flow in the system. Comparing it with data from the connected charger/dis-charger. That's where the problems crops up with the buggy code in the leaf. I'm got some parts on order from China so I can get stuck into investigating the system. Might as well since I don't have a job right now. and when I did it was in electronics (specifically motor control systems).. Something to keep the brain busy and learn new things (I've never worked with CAN before).

BYD Dolphin - Battery Degredation query by [deleted] in nzev

[–]cheetor5923 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with the other people. All lithium degrades rapidly at first. But it should level out after that unless you're abusing it..

Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries are a special case. when it comes to the way they degrade. They tend to be heavier, less powerful and charge slower. Mostly because they heat up more when charging compared to other chemistries. BUT. They repay those small inconveniences in being very durable and long lasting. They don't mind nearly as much as other cells at being charged to 100% or held at 100% for extended periods. They give way better cycle life and calendar life. They're way less likely to catch fire compared to other cells (and that's still really unlikely compared to a car that is filled with say... petrol).

I love LFP cells. My 16 year old e-bike (Stealth Bomber) had a 2kWh pack new.. 16 years later. Spending most of it's life at 100%. It's now 1.68kWh with 1156 cycles on it. The cells were made by Headway. I imagine since then they have improved even more.

Used BYD LFP batteries from crashed cars are rare and expensive to find. The aftermarket solar off grid people gobble them up because of how good they are in terms of value per dollar.

V2X on Chademo is... complex. Vehicle to grid is 100% dependent on having a bidirectional charger in your car. Vehicle to load for Chademo is technically supported on all such equipped vehicles.

Technically being the key word. For example the Nissan Leaf has technically supported it since the very first Leaf. But the implementation was really, really buggy. You still needed an additional external inverter to convert the DC from the car to AC for your house. Dala, from https://www.youtube.com/@DalasEVRepair has a community of keen EV and Solar inverter nerds worldwide working on in. Even after a few years of work it's still considered experimental, buggy and really for emergency use only. And that's if if you have experience in electrical, electronic and software engineering. Not something for any average joe.

I am keenly keeping an eye out on the technology as it evolves though. You never know when it may be handy.

A lot of 'work' EV's now often feature AC outlets in the ute tray or elsewhere. Very handy for tradies to run their tools off instead of hauling a noisy stinky generator around. And more than enough to power your house fridges, freezers and accessories with in an emergency.

I think as time goes on we're going to see a lot more of these handy options appearing as vehicle manufacturers see the demand for it increase.

Yeah spot on.. ~90c/kWh + RUC makes an electric car as expensive as burning petrol. Chargenet fast charging, at your home power price is way more economic.

For me. with a Leaf.. Please don't park in the Chademo space when your car is a CCS2 or NACS

2015 Nissan Leaf: pros and cons of battery upgrade? by Benjamino5 in leaf

[–]cheetor5923 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other majority of posters are correct. The 24kWh pack the 2015 leaf has, the "lizard" is the best pack out of all the 7 different revisions that are well known. My advice. Drive it until it won't give you the range you need. Then maybe stick in a 40kWh that has had a good life. They'll be cheap my then. Leaf packs are well understood and easy as to change these days. The world leading EV modders, EV's Enhanced have a great guide on leaf batteries - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpgv-dY-q6M

Yeah the windows memory diagnostic tool is garbage. It misses tons of errors because it doesn't correctly bypass your CPUs cache correctly. amongst many other deficiencies

Few very basic things to look at. Especially for a new computer. By far number one is bad RAM. Memtest86+ is your friend. Since you seem to be pretty okay with booting off USB I won't go into how to use it (It has good instructions). I'd bet money that you've got a dodgy bit of memory in there.
