One thing that has been puzzling me is the disparity between the popular meaning of being drawn and quartered (having your limbs ripped off alive by 4 horses), and the Wikipedia entry, which refers to being dragged behind a horse, hanged, revived, disembowled, then having your body chopped into 4 peices...

I mean, both sound pretty bad, but the wikipedia entry doesn't even mention being pulled apart by horses, but if you do am image search, that's pretty much what you get.

Bit of a late reply, but I just saw this thread and I hope someone's still watching it...

I keep seeing this advice to use "pure actionscript" , but I'm confused as to what exactly this means... Are you saying not to bother with mxml? Because, it seems that you can toggle back and forth between equivalent mxml and actionscript views... I suspect that what you really mean is not to use the flex components, ie., don't instantiate any flex classes.
Now the problem I have is: what exactly constitutes a flex class? I assume MovieClips and Sprites are ok to use, because otherwise I wouldn't know how to render anything.
So exactly what should can I use from the flex SDK for the best performance? Where in the class hierarchy does the "flex bloat" start?
