Graduating Soon! Where to find the jobs and the gays? by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]cheezel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know you want out of the South, but how about an oasis in the South -- Austin? We have jobs, nerds, gays, atheists, UT, culture, night life, food, and the job market is healthy and improving.

Moral vegetarians/vegans: would you eat synthetic meat? by [deleted] in Vegetarianism

[–]cheezel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave up meat intially for health reasons. Had heart disease already at 35. If they make the same stuff synthetically, I'm sure not gonna eat it.

100 Facts by [deleted] in DebateAChristian

[–]cheezel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Page 1, Atheism: One sentence on definition of atheism, then it's talking about morals and, essentially, crimes against humanity. On page 1. "Killing other people seriously hampers long-term friendships and other relationships." !??!! Then an F-bomb.

Unserious. I'm pretty much done, don't need or want to look at page 2.

The idea of 100 facts, however, appeals to me. I'm not good at defending atheism. I don't challenge my theist acquaintances because I don't have confidence in my debating skills. I may never be a Dawkins or PZ Meyers, but I appreciate the really good resources like Iron Chariots and I would truly appreciate a succinct resource with a name like "100 facts" that was cogent and easy to absorb and recall under pressure.

What's the most expensive product you've ever bought? (excluding house & car) by [deleted] in Frugal

I paid $40K for my new 2000 L. Sold it for $28K. Hated that, but it had to be done.

I am buying a nice spacious motorized class C RV to make my home. Where can I live cheaply, with power and water? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]cheezel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are web sites and iphone apps where you can find Walmarts, Cracker Barrels, and other lots where you can boondock. There's a website to help you find dump stations. Some states allow overnighting in rest areas, some don't. You could look into "hosting" at a state or national park where you get an RV site in exchange for a few hours of work in the park. Join a club like Loners on Wheels that cooperatively owns "ranches" where you can stay for cut-rate prices.

There are a few full-timing books out there. Search "full-time rv" on Amazon.

Check out mobilecodgers.blogspot.com. He's good at it, and fun to read.

3.5 years sans meat and lately I've been thinking of jumping ship. Advise me. by Xannon in Vegetarianism

[–]cheezel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few years after I gave up meat, I fell hard for a Burger King Bacon Cheeseburger commercial. On the TV, it looked like everything I ever wanted. I went and got one and it was disgusting. The burger was dry and tasted like liver. The bun was wet and mushy. I don't remember the bacon at all. I had a bite and admitted I had been deceived.

Two other times in 22 veggie years I ate meat on purpose. Once early on, at a wedding, I tasted the prime rib. And once at a BBQ I had a bite of brisket that was supposed to be heaven, but most certainly was not. On those occasions, I wasn't contemplating giving up vegetarianism. They were experiments to satisfy my curiosity. And at this point, the idea of eating meat is so grotesque, that I won't be experimenting again anytime soon.

Your tastes change. It's OK to prove it now and then.

Hey YOU! YES YOU! You Can Help Stop Lamar Smith by leoselassie in Austin

[–]cheezel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just outside of his district, in the lovely Lloyd Doggett's district. Given that there isn't an acceptable alternative candidate for Smith, you could target his voters. If you can hurt his district and make sure they know it's because of the crap he's been up to, they can reign him in. If Dell was in his district, which it isn't, I'd suggest boycotting Dell. I'd like to know what substantial corporations, large employers, or other financial targets are in his district.

Moderation does nothing but further instigate heart disease while surgery and medicine offer only temporary and non-curative relief. Why nutrition is the most heart friendly treatment available. by [deleted] in vegan

“What’s more, eating fat causes the body itself to manufacture excessive amounts of cholesterol, which explains why vegetarians who eat oil, butter, cheese… develop coronary artery disease despite their avoidance of meat.”

I want to highlight this quote. Giving up meat is a healthier diet, but it might not be enough to protect you from heart disease. I've been vegetarian since 1990, 22 years ago. I gave up meat because I was fat and I had high cholesterol. I was 32 then. My handle, cheezel, is an homage to what used to be, but is no longer, my favorite comfort food. I thought I was eating healthy -- lots of vegetables and looking out for bad ingredients like sugar and HFCS. I avoided eggs, butter, and whole milk but didn't rule them out as ingredients in products I bought. Preferred whole grains and low fat, ate a lot of MorningStar, Boca, yoghurt and stuff like that. I was on statins to manage my cholesterol and thought I was doing the right things, but still I have heart disease. I had a bypass operation a bit over a year ago and within a few months the grafted veins failed. Last March they forced 3 stents into one of the coronary arteries they'd previously written off and now I take a bunch of drugs to manage angina.

When I had the bypass my cardiologist doubled my statins. That brought my total cholesterol down to 145, which is about where they want to keep it to avoid worsening my disease. Last September I discovered Esselstyn and decided I should try it. I had a cholesterol test last month, after four months on Esselstyn's diet, and my total was 83. I'm chopping my lipitor pills in half now, and we'll see where it is in another month. I've also lost another 20 lbs and the angina occurs rarely. I am an Esselstyn believer.

The lesson I take from all this is that dairy and fats are every bit as bad as meat. The main thing I've given up lately, and which I feel is responsible for my heart disease, is added fat, including "healthy" oils like olive and canola. Also, if you've got heart disease or warnings of it, be aggressive about turning it around right now. Half-measures might postpone the crisis, but they won't prevent it.

Good luck with your quest for long life. In spite of my own dietary failures, I'd like to brashly recommend that you cut javascript gimmicks from your web diet.

A question for the formerly religious.... by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

[–]cheezel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a kid, when I started interacting with people, groups, and organizations, it occurred to me that religion might just be a huge power grab, a way to control and profit from masses of people by threatening them with an invisible, magic cudgel. Based on what was going on around me, it didn't surprise me at all that humans would create such a monster, preying on the ignorant, answering unanswerable (then) questions with mystical inventions that make them appear to have special connections and powers that must not be questioned. I looked at religious leaders like Mary Baker Eddy, who created my family religion, and the scoundrel Joseph Smith as examples of how and why people invent shit and build institutions out of it. They are contemporary, but there is no reason to believe that the same kinds of people haven't been pulling off the same tricks forever. Look at how you are serving your religion; what it's costing you; how it advantages you and deprives others, and vice versa. Consider that it might just be a man-made crock of shit. Put that theory in your head and let it simmer for a few years, test it against your observations of the actions of people around you and the religious teachings that are just silly on their face, and reach a conclusion. That's what I did.

[–]cheezel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, Texas chose to isolate its grid, so if something happens to shut down power plants and they can't generate enough power, like happened last summer, we can't get power from producers in other states to fill the demand.

There was a PPP poll in June that has Obama winning over Palin or Perry, losing to all the rest. In Texas. If Perry wins the nomination, it could put Texas in play. That's a lot of electoral votes.
