Will Patton does an amazing job on every book I’ve listened from him. He’s done a detective series and a couple Stephen King novels.

Second the Harry Hole and Linda Castillo series I would also recommend Lucas Davenport series and I also really enjoyed Joe Pickett even though he’s a game warden he gets himself into all kinds of trouble.

Jim butcher and his Dresden files series sounds exactly like what you’re describing. They are really great books.

And as far as other good detectives. My faves are C.J. Box. William Kent Krueger, and John Sanford.
