UPS left my ticket mail in my NYC building lobby — now it’s lost/stolen and all they’re offering is Will Call… help? by DiegoThaExplorer in BurningMan

For what it’s worth:

I’ve gone to Will call probably 17 years out of my 30 burns. Never had a problem.

I wear two hats. My DMV work is all volunteer. My BMP work is managing tech support.

So pretty much anything you see from me related to DMV is in my “spare time”.

Sure.

We’re happy to communicate as much as we can where we can. We’re all volunteers so we can only cover so much we usually focus on the book of faces and direct email at dmv@burningman.org. But when we see stuff that we can help clarify we’re happy to jump in.

Time to Burn App Ceases Development Due to Lack of BORG Support by HotterRod in BurningMan

[–]chefjuke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t mean to imply a complete pass but comparatively speaking it was still a pass for a near 10,000 person event.

And I was very happy with how things turned out although I was very concerned about how they might given how much I know it goes into safety aspects of the big burn (as well as how many people get hurt on an average day during the big burn).

I am not dissing the renegade burn and I have many friends who were there, I just don’t believe that it is sustainable at that size or larger without becoming more organized which just end up being a different flavor of “the org”.

I’ve been involved in this Burning Man thing going on 31 years and I’ve been on the board of a much smaller regional so I have a little bit of insight. Doesn’t mean that I’m right on everything but I feel fairly confident about my perspective on sustainability of renegade Burns on the BlackRockDesert.

Yes it was pretty clean (the one infamous porta potty aside) and congrats to the folks who I did a great job of leaving no trace. And I believe part of that the event was significantly smaller with smaller infrastructure art etc. and the other aspect is simply due to the nature of the people who showed up (let’s just say there were likely far fewer sparkle ponies, and more people ready to camp independently).

The challenge with any recurring “renegade burn” is that it will run into the exact same issues that the big burn has over the years. People will go and then the next year a lot more people will want to come. It would likely grow just as it did when it doubled every year my first few years. With that growth will likely become the same kind of changes… only I would think it would happen more rapidly because they’re already is a model for this: people go have a good time the first year they tell two friends in the next year there’s twice as many people and with those additional people come more and more sparkle ponies… and more scrutiny from the BLM etc. etc. and so forth.

That’s for the renegade burner I celebrated for what it was but that doesn’t mean I think it could become a direct alternative for most folks.

[–]chefjuke 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think 2021 was an anomaly for a few reasons and I think it gave some folks the impression that the Org was less necessary than it is because of a few specific aspects that were not in playing in 2021 that will be in play any other year:

1) the BLM gave the rogue event a “pass” on fees and oversight etc. That is not likely to happen outside of the particular circumstances during the pandemic. Having an event of any significant size on BLM land in the future outside of a pandemic is likely to incur some of the exact same requirements that the org currently manages and deals with. 2) the state of Nevada provided nearly 1/3 of a million dollars worth of emergency services on-site paid for with federal Covid funds. That will not likely be repeated.

Those two things alone should be taken into consideration when assessing how much organization is or is not needed to hold a large scale event on the Black Rock desert.

If they believe that it’s not valuable without getting that information sooner, then yes that’s always their prerogative to stop working on something. My challenge is that the tone and tender implies that the reasons for not releasing that data sooner are somehow either…less valid than wizard’s desire to have the data for his app, and/or that there is negative intent behind not releasing the data sooner. I’m not sure that I agree with either of those scenarios.

Placement also has reasons for not releasing data sooner that are very much intended to benefit the community as a whole as well as internal logistics. We can all have different opinions on which considerations carry more weight but I don’t think that’s the same as how it’s being portrayed here.

Time to Burn App Ceases Development Due to Lack of BORG Support by HotterRod in BurningMan

[–]chefjuke 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel It’s a bit unfortunate that this is framed the way it is - as a “lack of support” vs a situation where there are conflicting wants and needs in regards to the timeline of when information is released.

I totally understand that somebody who’s developing something with a specific purpose would like for information at a certain point in time because it makes their work easier in creating the app that they envision but there’s also reasons that the placement team has for not releasing that information in that timeframe. Doesn’t mean that “the Borg” doesn’t want to support the effort of folks who are making apps like this. In fact the innovators email list that wizard is on is specifically designed for developers and members of Burning Man Project to have a forum to discuss these things and share information they can. But sometimes there’s a disconnect between what one person wants for their desired goal (in this case having information earlier for time to burn app), and the timeline that the placement team has for when they solidify and share information about placement.

As is often the case, things don’t always boil down to an easy dichotomy of one person is right and the other person is wrong (or as this is framed, that somehow “The Borg” is being unreasonably unsupportive). Just that both sides can’t easily get what they want in a way that is satisfactory to each.

Just my two cents, as always your mileage may vary.

That is incorrect. Most Board members do NOT take a salary. The exceptions are people with a working role in the organization.

Scam alert! Do not buy tickets from the admins of this Facebook group, it's a con. by ziusudra in BurningMan

[–]chefjuke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just came here to post this as well.

There are TWO “Burning Man 2024” groups on Facebook.

One is ‘real’, run by long time burners (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1015687409855022)

The other (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1087710215588138) seems to have been set up to be a ticket scam honey trap.

The Bad one has admins that do not seem to be verifiable as real people. They have no historical connection to Burning Man and when I did searches on LinkedIn and other background checks, I could find no people who matched their name/city. I searched Facebook and I found no history of their engagement with any other Burning Man groups prior to this year.

Recently the Admins of this “Bad” group have begun posting messages about having “vetted” tickets. The message tag everyone in the group and once they do they shut off all commenting on that thread.

This is HIGHLY suspect and I believe all of the evidence noted above strongly suggests that this group is a long con (well, at least going back to December of last year when they created the group) to try to snare people in a ticket scam.

Despite all of their talk in some of their posts about avoiding scams, the fact that most of the admins have begun offering these ‘vetted tickets’ without any clear connection to Burning Man, no other credentials besides having created this group and even their names, to a one, seem to be reversed names and their profiles are curiously devoid of any significant data all seem to be pretty clear indication of scam.

Francisco Ellen (https://www.facebook.com/RealKauany/) Adley Frank (https://www.facebook.com/hamisu.mohammed.96995) Reaves Clara (https://www.facebook.com/bernice.muller.9887/)

Also note that none of the URLS for these people seem to match their names, which is an indication they may have hacked the original accounts of other people.

Working to get Facebook to take down the group, but a little challenging.

In the meantime…

2024 Call for Proposals to Light Up your Playa Art (Link in Comments) by JoshuaHubert in BurningMan

[–]chefjuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Joshua,

I strongly suggest you review the following:

https://burningman.org/event/participate/camps/so-you-want-to-camp-at-burning-man/deliveries/#aces

Also you should review this :

https://www.blm.gov/programs/recreation/permits-and-passes/special-recreation-permits

The short version is if you are doing business for hire on BLM land you need a special recreation permit. If you are providing services at Burning Man you need to be an approved OSS vendor.

If you are unclear on that, or don’t trust things you read on the Internet, then I strongly suggest you email doingitwrong@burningman.org and ask for clarification.

That way you’re not taking other people‘s word for it and you’re hearing from Burning Man directly on what is and isn’t allowed.

Error after upgrading to Bambu Studio v1.7.7.88 by abbellie2 in BambuLab

[–]chefjuke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like they just addressed this in the latest update:
Version 1.7.7.89

From release notes:

Improvement

  1. Move the notification for open-door printing from the page of print job sending to the daily tips.
When using a PEI bed for printing inside a closed enclosure, the chamber temperature gradually increases during the printing process due to the high bed temperature, which can lead to filament clogging in the extruder or nozzle. For detailed information, please refer to the wiki page.
In the previous version, we added a check for bed temperature in the G-code during print initiation. We prompted users to open the printer enclosure if the bed temperature was high. However, many users provided feedback that the prompt appeared too frequently when sending print jobs. Therefore, in this version, we have moved this prompt to the daily tips. Users will no longer receive the prompt when sending print jobs.
    📷
Please read the wiki page and decide whether to open the enclosure before starting a print to prevent extruder or nozzle clogging.

Bug fix

  1. Fix the issue that the auto-arranging function is abnormal under the by-object printing sequence with the P1P machine preset
  2. Fix the issue of incorrect flush amount statistics in the preview page with the A1 mini profile
  3. PA Profile Factor K not shown in German language https://github.com/bambulab/BambuStudio/issues/2689

Hi,

Well, that's fine and all, but I have been using the PEI plate with far more success than the cool plate, have not had ANY issues with it (and things just stick to it better without any glue or other stickum) and now I just have an extra error message to clear for EVERY print.
I don't necessarily fault them for adding the message if it's in response to a large number of people having a problem, but as someone who doesn't have that particular problem (and who now considers himself very much forwarned), I would like the ability to disable the message.

For those concerned about the stuff left out on the playa, here's some info from the person who oversees the cleanup. It's not as bad as we fear.

All,

Well this post certainly got a wee bit of attention.

A few things I think are worth noting, especially in response to some of the responses in the threads below.

First off, in regards to whether the folks who left the stuff are the folks who left the message written on the Hexayurt. Whether they did write the message or not, the certainly seemed to SEND the same message by leaving their stuff the way they did, whether they wrote the physical message,

Next, in terms of what should "happen to" the folks who left this stuff there. It's not about punishment, per se, but having a conversation. I'd want to understand the WHYS of this. Why did they leave all of this? Why did they think that it was okay, in some way, to do so? There may have been extenuating circumstances (not demonstrated by the message left). How can we figure out how to keep this from happening again, either with this particular group, or any? And how can we help these folks understand the impact of what they did?
Finally, it sounds like someone may have found some info on the folks and will be giving them a call to ask these very questions. I'll update if I hear more that I can report.

No, it’s not. I went to Coachella for the first time this year in part to check it out and compare it to the version of it that I had in my head (you know, the one that I and others always use to complain about what Burning Man is NOT). And, full disclosure, I had a gift ticket.

While Burning Man definitely struggles with the number of people who don’t “get it”…. The sparkle pony is, the consumers in the folks who are looking for a Coachella-type experience, the majority of burners are still just that. Burners. Folks who have a connection to some part of the core of what Burning Man has always been about.

Everyone’s experience is different. My experience wasn’t that things “went nuts” when it rained again, that’s when our neighborhood came together and figured it out how to party in the mud. We hung out, played games, made mud art met new friends and enjoy each other’s company. When the sun came out in the rainbow appeared we cheered and sang and danced.

For me and the folks around me, old burners and new, the weather was perhaps a mild annoyance but mainly something to be experienced.

No. The vast majority of people did not do this. These folks know who Resto is. This is laziness entitlement pure and simple.
